Does OOT(Bonus Disc) support 480i?
« on: April 17, 2003, 07:47:17 PM »
I've recently bought Nintendo's official component cables and since I had some days off of school i was trying all my games to see how they were being displayed in 480i and when i tried OOT-Master Quest it looked normal visually but as soon as i moved Link around it felt less fluid then it was before with the s-video cables, all the other games work fine. Can anyone give me a hint to whats causing this?

Ocarina of Time supports both 480i and 480p.  I've played the game on regular TV, HDTV, and a VGA monitor.  The frame rate isn't very high regardless of whether you run it in 480i or 480p.  It's possible that the frame rate may "seem" slower in 480p, but I didn't observe a significant difference.

In other words, I don't have the answer to your problem, but I wanted to show that I care.

All GC games support 480i..
OoT supports progressive scan (480p) for everything but the trailer videos and the ending sequence (and I have absolutely no idea why). It seemed to me that the framerate was off at points, and I'm inclined to blame the way they translated N64 machine code to GC code. I didn't play the game much in interlaced mode, so can't be certain, but it seemed about as bad either way.

You can always hold B when you start it up to switch modes, though it should ask automatically once you've had it in progressive mode.

P is Progressive, I is Interlaced. The number refers to the vertical resolution, but if it's interlaced you only really get half of that.. so, 480p is like 640x480 on your computer, 480i is like extra fuzzy 320x240. (OK so maybe I oversimplified some of that, but you get the idea right?)
1080i is a high enough resolution that it's better than 480p, even though it's interlaced, but it still can't beat 720p. Unfortunately the GC can't output anything higher than 480p.

I believe you mean extra fuzzy 640x240, Kero.  You still get the full horizontal resolution in interlaced mode.  What Kero means by "fuzzy" is that the TV only draws every other line at a time, alternating between odd and even rows.  If you're watching a 480i picture on a HDTV you'll likely consider it fuzzy due to how many HDTV's go about adjusting the interlaced signal in an attempt to produce a signal the TV can actually display (which often involves stretching pixels).  In general an interlaced signal is better described as jagged.
