Recapping Zelda
« on: July 06, 2009, 03:33:46 PM »
Over the past few months, I've been replaying through all of the Zelda titles in chronological order, giving my thoughts on each game.  If you have any interest whatsoever in a fresh, comparative look at each Zelda title, take a look at my blog, Game Of The Year.  I just wrote up my thoughts on Link's Awakening today, and will be starting my play-through of Ocarina of Time sometime in the next few days.  I haven't played it all the way through since 1999.

Very Nice.

I have only played through three of the Zelda games, since I don't have a Wii, but I look forward to reading the rest of your reviews.

Let the Zelda Inquisition begin: why didn't you enjoy Minish Cap?

I think Minish Cap is the game where I first experienced fatigue for the franchise.  You know, that sort of "I've done this before, dozens of times" feeling one gets when one plays a modern Zelda game.  On top of that, I really didn't enjoy the shrinking gameplay aspect.

However, that said, now that I'm four games into this project, I think I may tackle Minish Cap anyways, just so I can say I did the entire damn thing.

I'm getting there. I kind of have to find enough money to actually buy a Wii and then get all of the games. I should get a Wii in the next month or so, so it doesn't really matter.

And what do you mean that the Wii doesn't have a Zelda game? Have you ever heard of Twilight Princess?

TP is on the GC...

Buy a Nes and Zelda 1&2.
Buy a Snes and the greatest Zelda ever.
Buy a GBA and LA, FF, MC, OoA and OoS.

This can be all done for less than $250

I have to ask, does DrewMG review the phillips cd-i games?

Cuz, besides Oracle of Ages, those are the only Zelda games i've yet to play and would really like to read his views on them ;)

Actually, you could probably get a GameCube, Game Boy Player, the GB/GBC/GBA versions of most of those games and (possibly the Collector's Disc) along with Wind Waker and Four Swords Adventures for less than that.

But the Wii doesn't have a Zelda game...

Crossbow Training? ;)

I will volunteer to play them if someone else mails them to my house. :)

In other words, I have no plans.  The games I'm playing are what I interpret as the mainline Zelda titles on handheld and console.  The only Nintendo developed games I'm not playing that I can think of are Four Swords Adventures and Link's Crossbow Training.

He probably meant Four Swords, which came with LttP.

By the way, I started playing Ocarina of Time last night.  One way to offset the age of the game is to play it after staring at a Game Boy Color for a month. :)

Question - are you playing the games on their original systems (aside from skipping the original Link's Awakening, of course)?

The only Nintendo developed games I'm not playing that I can think of are Four Swords Adventures and Link's Crossbow Training.

I can understand skipping Crossbow Training - but it's a darn shame you're skipping out on Four Swords Adventures. I mean, I understand skipping the original Four Swords (The LttP combo cart), as it requires a second player (although is much more fun), but FSA can be completed by one individual and is a load of fun.

Also, don't miss Game and Watch Gallery 4 for the old G&W Zelda game. ;)

UncleBob, I'll give FSA a bit of thought.  Maybe I can knock it out.

And no, I don't have the original games for the original systems anymore.  I'm playing them on VC when available, and emulated otherwise.  I actually emulated Link's Awakening because I don't even own a Game Boy anymore.  I would have rather paid Nintendo, but they haven't made it available yet in downloadable.  When they do, I will buy the game from them.

No, my project is less about re-creating the original experience and more about just going through the games in the order they were released.

(Not to mention that Nintendo ruined the ports by removing puzzles and some of the best parts of the games)

Okay, UncleBob, you've convinced me.  I've got Four Swords Adventures on my Goozex Queue.  It's fairly cheap, and there's no line for it.

Nope, because I would take months and months and months and years to do it that way.  I'm trying to get as many extras as possible, but I'm not a completionist.

I MIGHT be talked into Minish Cap.
