Well guys, my DSi came today! I like it a lot, but I am very disappointed that the web browser seems to lack any flash support whatsoever. At least on the Wii you could play youtube videos, but on the DSi you can't even do that, let alone more advanced things like Hulu.
This effectively means the DSi is useless for Web 2.0 stuff. Yes, you can do web 1.0 and such, but Web 2.0 is the big thing these days. Plus as a web browser I noticed it was horrendously slow in rendering pages... probably because the DS's processor and ram and so forth is very limited. Come to think of it, this is probably also the reason why the flash suppot was left out... maybe the hardware just can't handle it. *shrug*
But that's just the web browser. The camera thing is really cool, and while it isn't exactly a high quality camera or anything it is however perfectly suitable for the fun sort of casual picture taking that people do with cell phones and such. I also had a lot of fun with the voice recording thing and changing the pitch and speed of my voice, lol...
The much larger screen and larger stylus are a HUGE improvement over the DS Phat that I used to own, so that almost justifies the cost in and of itself. But I don't think its a big leap from the DS lite to justify upgrading from that. So if you don't have a DS or if you own a Phat then upgrading to a DSi is probably worth it, but if you own a DS Lite, then I wouldn't recommend it because for you it probably isn't such a big leap...
BTW, for a limited time it seems Nintendo is giving 1000 points free for downloading stuff on the DSware. All I've downloaded so far with those points is the Mario calculator for 200, which is pretty cool. Now my DS can also be used as a calculator, and since its mario that makes it the coolest calculator ever... lol. As for the other 800 points, I think I'll just wait and see what comes along.
I also love the matte finish on it and how it is now impossible to leave behind finger prints or have it slip through your greasy fingers and fall on the floor like you could with the older more slippery models.
So to summarize, in Kairon's case since he only has a Phat (and a worn out one at that) I think I could recommend the DSi... but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has a lite. The web browser was the selling point for me, but now that I see it doesn't handle flash I am kinda disappointed and probably won't be using that capability very much, but there are lots of other features which help to redeem this shortcoming, and I haven't even got around to messing with music files yet. The day is late, so this experimenting will have to wait until tomorrow!
