Ice Climber 2: Judgement Day
« on: June 14, 2009, 09:29:12 PM »
This thread is for Ice Climber game ideas.  I'll be posting some of my own over time.  Feel free to be creative, but remember that it has to fit with Ice Climber canon:  They have to climb ice.  Other than that, it's really up to you.  Shoot for the moon!

The year is 2036, and man's journey to the moon could never be easier, simpler, and more efficient.  ...Or so we thought.

CAPCOM:  Sir!  We've lost contact with the astronauts who were transporting that radioactive sample for study in space!

Mission Control: OH NO!  It's too high up, too cold, and too atmospherically thin for anything we've got to reach them!  Our jets can't fly that high, and our men would suffocate!  Can anyone save us?

How about a joint venture between Nintendo and Infinity Ward, expanding the ice climbing portions of the Modern Warfare 2 E3 demo into a full Wii game?

Ice climbers is a property that would be hard to turn into a full retail AAA title. I think Elevator Action is the same way.

Did you miss the whole climbing the frozen space elevator to save astronauts who are on a mission to... uhhh... defeat space polar bears?  It screams AAA.  Actually, I think it would invent a new tier of title sales, I'd call it AAAA, if it were up to me, but it probably wouldn't be.

I do like the idea "Ancient History Ice Climber."  You are Popo (or Nana).  An Arctic Archaeologist. You fight Nazis and Russians, and anyone looking for frozen cavemen and dinosaur weapons of mass power and destruction, or even things of alien origin.  This would be an entire franchise rebranding, or perhaps a spin-off franchise.  In one game, you'd try to beat the Russians to the North Pole, preventing them from claiming it, and everything in it, from entering complete Russian claim and control.  About half way through, you reach your goal, and Nana analyzes the glacier below, only to discover there's a strange, new organism, evolved from ice and carbon, that's very slick, very hard, but has the ability to create large defensive towers, and even capable of launching anti-air ice-based missiles.  Unfortunately, while Nana and Popo were busy claiming the Arctic for all of science, to be shared, the Russians, well, they learned how to manipulate and control the ice tower organisms, and are planning to freeze the globe in order to use these organisms, the ultimate defensive, to gain tactile control over every major city.

The only hope, now, is for Nana and Popo to scale the towers and reach inside, to try to reason with the ice organisms, and encourage them to take back control of their lives.  Fortunately, these are the two archaeologists who are equipped for the job.  You and a friend can commandeer Popo and Nana as they climb ice through the Arctic, watch the beginnings of a Russian attack, swing hammers, and talk to seemingly inanimate objects, like vegetables, ice and carbon compounds.  You're the planet's last hope!  CLIMB THAT ICE!

Now, of course, this game will have to be set during the cold war, and the sequels will be based on Eskimo covenants, Ice caverns, holy seals, and the occasional asteroid-set-on-a-collision-course-towards-Earth-but-it's-made-of-ice.

I think the idea has potential.  Keep in mind, most of what the Climbers learn is rooted in archaeological ice myth, and such.  Some ice religion, yadda dadda da, and you've got some great promise for an Ice Climbers' franchise.

Edit:  I think somewhere, there needs to be a slogan "So nice, that they climb ice."  Something like a newspaper line that gets picked up on the news hallowing their victory in the Arctic.  In response, they become famous, and in a later game, a foreign villain doesn't get the slogan correct, and when he greets the fearsome twosome, he says something like "So nice, there's two of them."  I like the latter phrase, but I don't think it's mainstream enough, so it has to be relegated to an "AA" villain. (Keep in mind this is something of an "AAAA" or "AAAAA" title, so the lowest he could be is an "A" villain, of course.)

Of course, I think the real question is "How do you make ice-climbing based gameplay fun?"
For those of you who played the original Ice Climber, you know that it's not an easy thing to do.  Pretty much, it shows you jump and swing hammers.  Sometimes there's a polar bear, but can you really count on polar bears to come through for you?

I think you'll find the solution is based in a game that is deeply routed in physics.  I'm talking the full gamut of ice surfaces here.  You've got dry ice, slick ice, salted ice, sublimated ice, deposition ice, diamond dust, ice cream.  You have to climb and make combat on all of these types of platforms, and they all handle differently, of course.  The key is to make the player question, "If I were to climb a giant glass of iced tea, how would that feel?"  Believe me, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

After that, combat, both solo and team attacks, has to be intricate and precise.  Of course there's the basic hammer swing, where Popo (or Nana), reach their arms out as far as possible, and provide a powerful, clearing sweep with his or her hammer, but there's a few other important details:  As an Ice Climber, the opposite of your goal is to be an Ice Plummetter.  You don't want to fall off of your established platform.  Don't let yourself get pushed away!  On basic stages, like Ice Cream, the surface will be mushy, and not too slick, so colliding with an enemy will only yield insignificant knockback, as well as damage, but on more advanced stages, like ice sculptures, the slickness will cause great knockback, at least three times as far as how far Mega Man goes when he gets hit.  Of course, since this is ice we're talking about, some stages will have the obligatory icicles that respond to their environment, possibly falling and impaling the climbers (or their enemies!)

Beyond this, our climbers will grow as time passes, be it a customization system, power-ups on or in the ice, or even ancient relics.  Team attacks will be learned with experience, as well as several new hammer strokes, from the original "reach-out-and-swing," to the practical "Swing overhead."  Not only will the climbers use hammers, but also, they'll use climbing equipment, like spikes or nails, to fight those enemies with thin skin, but staggering speed.  They'll learn to catch ledges before they fall too far, and even to use each other to gain a boost.  For, as much as the game is about climbing ice, it's also about climbing the inner glacier in oneself, and being the best Ice Climber you can be, as Popo and Nana will learn time-and-time again.

I think this could be a viable game, and there's several possibilities.

Edit:  Don't forget, Nintendo could take a page from Team Ico and their "Shadow of the Colossus," which was already basically an Ice Climber clone to begin with.  All they did was take away the ice and make the mountains move.  It could work if you put the ice back in, and made things a little more stable.  Or not, about the stable thing.  Ice is just important.

No. I do have Ice Climber on the NES but I don't really like it. Though I have to say, it is impressive how inspired you are from one simple little game.

Prince of Ice Climbing: The Frozen Throne

Think the final climbing segment of Sands of Time. You are climbing a huge frozen mountain with outcrops, ledges and pillars you can swing to, shimmy up or side step along. I'm also thinking of Toki Tori-esque puzzles thrown in the mix.
The view will be restricted to two dimensions with the exception of certain points where the view may shift up, down, left or right to account for movement along the face of the mountain. 2.5D would aptly describe it.

Like how you had Elika or the Sands to save you in the Persia games, you have Nana to save Popo or vice versa thanks to the tether.

Then, there is a critical point near the end where one of them is taken from you and you have to try and navigate to your missing comrade.

The Tether can be a useful tool on its own as well. Use it like a whip, or use it as a sling-shot. Keep Popo at one end and have Nana go across to another far ledge to create a large slingshot to fling items or characters up to higher levels. Or use it as a bridge to span chasms for allies.

Have some heat-based enemies and puzzles. Say there is a fire breathing enemy lizard. You have to find a way to get a block of ice past him or else it melts. If there is a fire-lizard on a grate, you can throw an ice block at it to melt and the water flows down the drain and refreezes in a different area or falls into a special key mold to make a key to progress.

Tools can include

>The Tether. Maybe give it magical properties or have it upgradeable. Also give it a stress level. Go beyond the stress level and it snaps. Or have special limited use tethers you can find that have special properties akin to the different goo balls in World of Goo. Some can be sticky for grabbing items, others can melt ice and some can be magnetic for attracting special items.

>Hammer. Can be used to stun enemies or break certain ice or rock structures. Can be upgraded to break stronger materials and stun enemies for longer periods of time (I think not allowing enemies to be killed in most instances will be a game feature).

>Chissel. To be used in conjunction with Hammer to inscribe symbols. Use the Wiimote to point at wall where you want to mark and shake the Nunchuck to swing the hammer.

>Clinbing Spikes. Special spikes which allow you to free climb a mountain face. Found in limited quantity, probably in special areas where the puzzel/challenege is to ascend a certain height with the fewest spikes.

>Pickaxe. used to ascend short heights. Saves you from a freefall if used right.

>Rope. It's a rope. Never leave home without good rope.

So...should I keep going?
I think I'm going to go back into trying to be a game developer. This idea is pretty intense.

Ice Climber 2: The Revengening

The power of sunspots has given the mountain from the original game sentience and now it's out for blood. Nana and Popo must join forces with their once hated enemies, the polar bears, to find the 14 enchanted crystals that are the only hope of stopping the mountain from irradiating the world's supply of gold.

I read something the other day that said Nintendo was doing something with some franchise of theirs.  Some type of revival or something, in fact, one that's rumored to make editors and peoples say "Meh."

Looks like Ice Climbers is being revived!!!

Vanilla Ice would be the featured artist for the first movie, with Black Ice and Ice T, and various other Ice-related artists rounding out soundtracks.
