Dead Space: Extraction Release Date Announced

 EA has announced that Dead Space: Extraction will be released on September 29.    


A prequel to last year's Dead Space and developed by Visceral Games, Dead Space: Extraction is a Wii exclusive on-rails shooter that promises to expand on the storyline by offering new playable characters, the intense horror the franchise is known for to a brand new audience, and have the "best visuals ever showcased on the platform."

(NASDAQ:ERTS) and its Visceral Games™ studio announced today thatDead SpaceTM Extraction, will be available in stores on September 29, 2009 in North America and October 2, 2009 in Europe exclusively for the Wii™. Dead Space Extraction delivers the highly-polished, action-horror experience the Dead Space franchise is known for while upping the ante for technical excellence on the Wii with some of the best visuals ever showcased on the platform.

Well, here's hoping the game is as awesome as the original Dead Space and its own trailers because that footage IGN put out of the E3 demo looks rather lame.  I'm kind of surprised EA's releasing this game so early instead of closer to Halloween like the first Dead Space.  I guess they want to avoid getting buried under the Christmas barrage.

I keep going back and forth on this game. One day I want it and the next I'm 'Meh' towards it.
It does look fairly nice, though. I wouldn't call it the best visuals on the system.

It needs more lighting. from the flame thrower, from the glow worm, from the electric beam, from burning enemies and from anything else that should be emitting light. Their lighting engine is very poor.

That, and the enemies just don't act Dead Space-ish.  In the original game, maybe 1 or 2 Necromorphs would just be hanging around a room for you to run into and shoot, but for the most part they'd pop out of vents or pretend to be dead so they can suddenly jump off off the ground and lunge at you.  From all the real-time footage I've seen of this game, the Necromorphs just walk up to you from off-screen and you see them long before they have any shot at reaching you.  In fact, I'd say they behave more zombie-like than the zombies in the Umbrella Chronicles games, because at least those make a passing attempt to get at you.  The game just doesn't look scary in the least.  Sorry, but I don't buy the B.S. that it has to be this way because it's an E3 demo, and if the press doesn't call them on this now I can guarantee you that EA won't fix it.  There's definitely a good game in there, but from all appearances this thing needs a lot of work.

It's the first level.  It's supposed to be the best the game has to throw at you to hook you in, the level that's supposed to immerse you into the concept and convince you that the game is awesome.  From the looks of it, it doesn't do its job.  I'm fine with it being easy.  I'm not fine with it not being the least bit scary in a fracking Sci-Fi horror game and enemies not acting true to the source material, especially when the trailers seem to get it right.

From the perspective of being the hook that grabs the player, immerses them in the experience, and entices them to keep playing: every single time.  Your first level is your best foot forward, and if it's bad I don't see why any player should believe there's anything better to follow and not just quit right there.  That's how it should be, and then the levels only get better than that high-water mark from there.  Your first level should never be as flat as this one appears to be.
