Twilight Sellout was a disappointment due to the fact Nintendo was pandering to the annoying fanbase, thus making it Ocarina of Time 2.0, with more suck.
When playing through it I wondered if Nintendo did that on purpose. Like Nintendo didn't want to make that game and was pissed that Wind Waker was coldly received so they made Twilight Princess as generic as possible to "prove" Wind Waker's superiority and make it out like anyone asking for realistic Zelda was against innovation or creativity. I don't think anyone was really calling for Ocarina of Time 2.0. What it was was simply that Nintendo showed us all a really awesome Zelda video at Spaceworld and then gave us a cartoon Zelda that looked NOTHING like what we had gotten hyped up about. The bait and switch is largely the reason for Wind Waker backlash (though I maintain that it looks NOTHING like Zelda) and that's why people wanted realistic Zelda. Nintendo showed something, we wanted it, Nintendo took it away and we bitched and I think we were totally in the right there. The way Nintendo handled Wind Waker was a major PR **** up, kind of like last year's E3 actually.
Anyway Wind Waker isn't creative because of its look. Take away the look and it's just a very conventional Zelda game with a really boring ass overworld. I'd say it's not very original or creative at all. We wanted a look that better matched the Spaceworld footage and was preferrably on land since the ocean was so lame. It was Nintendo's decision to make it so generic and use a Hyrule that was nearly identical to OoT. I figure it was either Nintendo's protest against making a game they didn't really want to make or they greatly overcompensated to the negative reaction to Wind Waker and assumed everyone was angry about change itself, when it really was the specific nature of the change that people didn't like.
Phantom Hourglass is the worst Zelda entirely because the controls make it an utter chore to play though. Spirit Tracks will probably be the first Zelda game I don't purchase and that sucks because there is a good game trapped somewhere in PH.
Dale Gribble would have been proud...
I understand that Twilight Princess was a disappointment for many, but really? You HONESTLY believe Nintendo made the game as a big f*ck you to their fans? REALLY?
While I admit Twilight Princess was not a perfect game there was a lot of love put into it, believe it or not. The music was great, it had some amazing moments, the graphics were great, the characters were great and even if the gameplay borrowed too much from Ocarina of Time it did provide some amazing moments.
At this point, I honestly believe that fans will never be pleased with Zelda, no matter who makes the game, what type of graphics it uses or what gameplay innovations brings to the table. Ocarina of Time was great, but fans still prefer Link to the Past. Majora's Mask was great, but it was too different from Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker was great, but felt rushed. Twilight Princess was great, but was too much like Ocarina of Time. Finally, Phantom Hourglass was great but a lot of people didn't get the touch screen controls.
Sensing a pattern? It seems that no matter how great a Zelda game ends up being fans will still find something to complain about and claim they can do better.
In my case, I'll just shut my mind off and enjoy the ride. So far I have enjoyed all the Zelda games that I have played. Even Wind Waker, which is my least favorite Zelda so far, manage to create a lot of wonderful moments in both gameplay and character presentation.
