Another issue.

Using the first computer I put Win8.1 on.
the computer is connected to the internet, but the only browser that will let me navigate it, is IE
Chrome will endlessly be loading, IE finds the page right away, but IE will not let me install any other browser.

My Norton is active, and scans daily, same with my Malwarebytes.
I'm about to run a scan right now, but thought I would put that out there just incase anyone else has had this problem and/or knows what the issue is.

Get rid of Norton. If you have Windows 8 you don't need to install any antivirus, unless you do really shady stuff. If Chris Pirillo (remember him from TechTV?!!) says you don't need it...then I believe him.

http://chris.pirillo.com/windows-8-anti-virus-is-it-necessary/

I've only used Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender/Microsoft AntiSpyware for the past 9 years (since it was released)...never gotten a virus.

I wish I could remember what the bug with "waiting for cache" in Chrome was, but it is something that occurs on Windows 8 and 8.1 for some reason. It's a simple 1-click fix - you might want to just make sure you didn't block it in your firewall settings or something though.

Are you ever going to stop having computer problems?

I wish.

I have 2 computers on 8.1 right now. upstairs and downstairs.
upstairs is having the "waiting on cache" problem in Chrome
downstairs is having the "IE is the only browser your allowed to use anymore" problem.

The mini Dell is working fine BTW. no issues so far. I kinda figured out all I need to know to have it operate the way it's intended user is using it for, so we are good on that front.

I'm having issues on my phone too, but that's mostly with Swype jumping back and erasing words at it's leisure, constantly... it's very annoying, and fucks up all sorts of post from the phone. But I don't know if anyone can actually help with that one. I think it has to do with autocorrect, but I disabled all autocorrect on my phone.

And Norton is only on this downstairs computer, and it has to come with the Comcast Security suite which is FUCKING ANNOYING. you're right, I'm uninstalling that **** right now. maybe that's part of the problem.

I went to the control center > programs window and tried to uninstall Constant Guard Suite from Comcast.... nothing happened for ever.

I ctrl/Alt/Del > Task Manager > Norton -End Task

all of a sudden the installer for Firefox popped up 6 times (because I kept clicking on it earlier because it wouldn't even show up in the IE download)

Norton restarted itself, and that interrupted the firefox installation.

i task managered it again, and immeidately unstalled it before it blocked the operation somehow.

Now I'm posting from Chrome again. weeeeeiiiiiiirrrrrd huh.
(FF installed and MS Office also installed - was blocking me from doing anything outside of IE.... WTF!?)

I just had another issue, where certain Youtube videos would have no sound in Chrome, but I solved that issue by installing Firefox and installing Flash again under FireFox (because it was already present in Chrome according to the message on adobe when I tried to update it in Chrome). Now those certain videos play audio just fine in Chrome.

I thought that was kinda weird.

My main is Opera 16, then the rest of them. I have about 10 web browsers downloaded, because you never know when you might need them. :P

Has anyone heard of and/or used this program?
http://download.cnet.com/SRWare-Iron/3000-2356_4-10889248.html

It's supposedly a browser based off of Chromium that removes all the google ad/tracking that is causing the "waiting on cache" issue with Chrome.

It's not ad tracking that causes that it's some setting in Internet Options.

Well, I've cleared the cache about 4 or 5 times now, and I finally reset my computer, so we'll see how that plays out.

I can't get it to run on Linux, but I had it recommended to me by a coworker.

supposedly its a super light weight Chrome that still uses all the same extenstions/add-ons/etc.

It's not the cache either. Open up IE and go to settings > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings and uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings" - I'm pretty sure that's how you fix it.

Good news is that I haven't had the "waiting on cache" thing anymore

Another issue I would like resolved asap.

The computer isn't locking itself when it goes to sleep.
The option is checked. Yet it continues to not do it on it's own. I have to Windows L to make it happen, otherwise it just wakes up to my screen, even on my 2nd computer where I am not the only user of the computer.

I installed Linux on my Chromebook tonight in anticipation of Steam Home Streaming, and I'm having a hell of a time with some of this. I know we have a couple people here familiar with the OS, so my simple, maybe stupid, question is is there an Applications folder here somewhere or do I have to use the purple search thing if I want to launch something not in the bar?

Ubuntu? I think it kind of depends on the app/program, I can look it up on my VM in a little bit (been a while). You can usually just open a terminal and type the name of the program though (full "name" like Google Chrome).

Yeah, Ubuntu, 13.something. There's a kind of launcher search thing but it's kind of slow on this hardware.

Yeah, you can open Ubuntu Software Center and click "Installed" but you'll only see programs that were...installed by Ubuntu Software Center. I'm not a huge fan of shortcuts, but really just making a folder on you desktop and dragging/dropping programs into it is probably the easiest solution. I'm sure there's a better way though. I'm on 12.04, gonna upgrade. If you have a good video card the Windows Key + W "snap" feature is my favorite thing to do (just like in OSX).
