An SSD is certainly going to be faster than a traditional spinning disc. The hybrid will be almost equally so. Personally, I would opt for a smaller SSD to load up just the OS and some RAM heavy, yet essential programs... like Photoshop. I'd install everything else to a much larger (and cheaper) SATA drive. As for media storage, I'd keep that external for safety's sake.

That said, 5200 is pretty slow by today's standards. You're generally only going to see those speed in storage-centric externals, or cheaper laptops. You can upgrade to a faster platter and probably notice at least a bit of a difference. Also keep in mind that you be seeing bottlenecks elsewhere, and while a faster drive may help, it might not be as glorious as hoped for.

My current hard drive is 5200 because it's a 1 TB notebook drive. If I'd had a faster option I'd have taken it, but I wanted the capacity. I think this is the main bottleneck, because my processor's outdated but still decent (2.96 Ghz Core 2 Duo) and I've got 8 GB of RAM. Right now I'm leaning toward the SSD, because based on the benchmark tests I've seen it's going to be considerably faster than the hybrid and I'm not hurting too much for space.

Your first instincts were right, go for the SSD. You already know what you want and need. The Core 2 duo might be "old", but an SSD will make any operating system snappy unless it's tied to a Celeron. There aren't any real catch me you haven't noticed. Just make sure any program that needs a scratch disk or virtual memory doesn't use the SSD. You will also need to make some changes to some of your habits to make sure you don't save to the SSD unless you have no other option. While they have improved, SSD are still way behind when it comes to the number of writes they can perform.

Since you will have two drives, stick a back up OS in it for a handful of GBs.

There's a command line on Windows. I think the delete command is just "del."

http://commandwindows.com/runline.htm I think that's it. If it's still current.

I've managed to delete the content of the file, but the icon won't go away. It was an .mkv file, and for some reason the the majority of those will will open in DivX with no sound and require the download of another driver, so I instead just manually open it in VLC where it will have sound, but now I can't get rid of it.

Keeps saying

notice how the file size in only 78 bytes now.

p.s. The file is not in use, and I've even tried rebooting and attempting to delete first thing before doing anything else.

Write down the file path, start the computer in safe mode command line, manually delete the file. You will have to use the short style naming convention. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.3_filename

I know some people have a problem with iTunes, but I need help (I have general computer problems, but will ask those later). For a few days iTunes kept freezing. Now I have it working again, but every podcast downloads slowly (like it will say a 200MB podcast takes hundreds of hours), before just timing out. I don't want to have to download all of my podcasts straight to my iPod Touch, anybody know what I should do?

Does anyone know how to set up a working VPN through Win7?

I've followed 3 different guides which all pretty much tell me to do the same thing, but in the end, it doesn't work.

Why am I trying to do this you ask?
Yesterday ISP started tracking torrenters and may start doing the new "6 strike" rule which could lead to throttled internet if flagged.

I wish to avoid being flagged for my downloading habits, especially when the software used to "enforce" this new policy is very faulty and not 100% reliable (HBO.com got flagged for streaming it's on content through HBOgo - it's own website).

so can anyone help?

I keep getting this error

Speaking of the new 6 strikes rule, I laughed when somebody on Facebook (on my local Occupy page) started bitching and complaining about it and openly admitted that its because he downloads content illegally, and when I told him to just buy it legally he tried to justify his actions by saying he can't afford to legally pay for music/movies/programs. I think if you download stuff illegally, then your ISP is well within its right to limit your Internet speed (and I think they should be able to cut you off entirely).

BnM, this is definitely a question better suited for a different forum. Or, at the very least, ask Morari in a PM. ;)

why in a PM? there is nothing illegal about setting up a VPN, and I'm not doing it for any illegal reasons.

I don't pirate movies, music & games through the internet, I just want to make sure I don't get a false positive while streaming media or from my usual daily/weekly downloads.

No, it's not that. I just don't think anyone on the forum knows the answer to that question besides maybe Morari, and wouldn't be better to get his attention by PMing him?

You can first check to see if your ISP is participating since not all ISPs are doing the six strikes rule, and even some that do have different punishments (AT&T won't throttle your speed).

How would one even check that? My ISP is a extremely tiny one based in my town of 500 people.

Then you should be fine. From what I can find, 5 ISPs are participating right now. Four of the five are AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable. They have the option to terminate service to violators, but none of them plan to do that.

Verizon is the only ISP that will cap customers' data speeds. Before doing so, Verizon will issue a series of alerts and then force repeat-offender FiOS customers to watch instructional videos about copyright and legal methods of downloading content. If customers continue pirating content, their connection will be capped at near dial-up speeds for 2-3 days. Verizon customers will get two weeks' notice before any slowdown occurs, providing a window to appeal piracy accusations. Customers of any ISP can appeal a copyright alert for a $35 fee, which is waived if their appeal is granted or if they express financial difficulties.

Time Warner Cable will not throttle customers' data plans or terminate service. Time Warner Cable customers accused of piracy will receive a series of alerts which, if they are ignored, will lead to customers experiencing a browser lock until they call Time Warner Cable representatives for an instructional conversation about copyright and legal methods of downloading content.

Comcast won't cap Internet speeds, either. Instead, repeat offenders will be first made to confirm receipt of stern warning emails. If their unwanted behavior continues, they will encounter persistent in-browser alerts, deletion of which will require a call to Comcast Security Assurance. CSA will discuss copyright issues and legal downloading alternatives with Comcast customers before deactivating the alerts.

AT&T is also choosing not to throttle users' speeds. AT&T customers accused of piracy will receive a series of alerts. If an accused customer continues illegally downloading content after receiving four such alerts, AT&T will demand they "take an extra step to review materials on an online portal that will educate them on the distribution of copyrighted content online" before they can access other websites, according to a company statement. AT&T noted the program is focused on "customer education rather than punishment."

It also only applies to wired Internet, so services like AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless are not affected.

I use a VPN (to the USA) because Netflix UK is terrible and things like Hulu (and a number of youtube videos) are region locked.

I gave the himachi suggestion not knowing your full situation. There needs to be a himachi host, you then connect clients to the host. It isn't a fully featured stand-alone VPN client.

You may want to do a port check and confirm your ISP allows VPN connections through residential service.

I've already enabled it on the router. I installed the Hamachi. I did the VPN setup through windows... what's next?
