It stopped working as a repeater... but I've given up on that for now.

New problem.
My sister's laptop has a broken 17"screen (haven't looked at it yet, don't know if it's physically damaged or just stopped working), how much would it cost to fix/replace that?

Don't buy laptops. They're overpriced junk prone to extreme damage.

That said, physically replacing a laptop screen is generally not too difficult. Most repair shops will charge an arm and a leg for it because of the time involved however. Likewise, the parts are generally outrageous unless you can find a junked machine on eBay to strip the screen from.

Since you don't actually even know what's wrong, it could be something much simpler. The cable could have come loose from the motherboard. The video drivers might be corrupt. Hell, she could have accidentally switched it over to an external monitor with a keyboard shortcut.

Yeah, but any of the physical problems, even lose cords.  Can be a royal pain to get at in a laptop.

I've partially dis-assembled a laptop before, so if I could get a replacement screen for fairly cheap, then I will find the patience to install it and save $500 in buying a new one instead.

I replace laptop LCDs all the time, it's typically a simple 25 minute job or so. Save money and don't get the cable with it (assuming the LCD isactually bad). Most of the time it's as simple as popping off the top bezel that covers the keyboard screws, unscrewing the keyboard and then maybe 10 more screws in the top assembly. Depending on the resolution of the screen you'll be looking at probably $70-120 for the LCD, and remember that laptop manuufactuers typically don't make the LCDs themselves (unless it's Toshiba or Samsung maybe).

If I gave you the laptop model, would that help?

Maybe if the LCD is cheap enough, you would be willing to put it in for another $20-$30 on top of it.

It's really simple usually but shipping costs would probably make this pretty expensive. I'd be happy to do it if you want though, what is the model?

This won't help at all, but I had a laptop break in half on me. For a while I just plugged the bottom portion into a TV.

I haven't found the power cord yet, but this is what my sister says is wrong with it.

There is a black spot on the whole left side of the screen from the power cord hitting it and cracking a pressure point.

Now I realize that it should still work fine if she hooks it up to her TV, but she is like me in that we love to multi-task. But as soon as she finds the powercord, I will show her that she can still use the computer.

Yeah the LCD must be bleeding (it is liquid after all). If you want to replace the LCD here is an incredibly simple guide. You don't even have to remove anything other than the front of the LCD bezel (assuming you don't replace the cable, again, saves a bit of money). I've done one of those before, took about 5 minutes. You can skip the inverter part - this would actually be a great start for getting into computer/laptop repair. My least favorite thing is replacing actual charger ports, that can be a real pain in the dick.

$92 for a screen w/ free shipping on ebay and an incredibly easy guide to follow for what looks like an incredibly easy thing to fix.

Anyone know of any good disk partition recovery tools? My newest external drive's ntfs partition vaporized taking over 2TB data with it and testdisk/windows/linux keeps saying it's completely raw. :-\

Why do hard drives hate me so much? Sure, there was a storm last night but it work fine for most of the day afterwards...

Meh, I'm one of the IE holdouts and I am going to have to switch to Firefox while visiting the site. Adblock does work well.

I actually primarily  use IE9 64-Bit at home and switch to Chrome for things that don't work, like Silverlight.

http://www.microcharged.com/rules.zip

Go to Safety -> InPrivate Filtering Settings -> Advanced Settings.
Import the rules.xml file from above

I used Notepad++ to edit the file and add new lines. I viewed the source code of the site to find the url of the offending ads.

Let me know if it works for IE9.

Unlike Crimm, I'm not going to ban people for saying they use AdBlock. I will, however, ban people who are using Internet Explorer by choice.

I followed this guide. extremely easy job. Hardest part was getting the screen bezel off since it felt like you were breaking stuff the entire time.

Turns out that the screen video input for the replacement screen was on the wrong side. Had to contact the ebay seller who is gonna send the extension cable, so everything should be all good.

So some day last week, my G: drive disappeared.
My G: drive is where I keep all my stuff, files, videos, pics, etc etc.

I've been meaning to get around to opening up the computer, but there was nothing on there that I needed immediately, so I've been putting it off.

Out of fear of the worst (dead drive) I decided to rule out anything else I could before opening up the dungeon to do open heart surgery. So I've run several different virus checkers.... nothing of not found.

Them today, out of no where, my G: Drive is back as if it just took an extended vacation and forgot say something. Everything is in tact and it works as good as it always has.
So WTF is up with that?
