What is the appeal of this series?

I have played Curious Village and Diabolical Box.  Maxi here is brief overview with out spoiling the stories for either game.  Basically Professor Layton is a world famous professor who is well known for being a great puzzle solver. He has an apprentice name Luke.  Due to his great puzzle solving skills, he has a tendency to get asked to solve mysteries and such. You get a lot of variety of puzzles to solve. Some are presented by locals, some are hidden.  As you solve certain puzzles, the story progresses through cinema scenes and conversations.  There is usually a twist or two to keep things intereresting.  If you like puzzle solving, the game has a wide variety of puzzles, from sliding block puzzles, observational ones, following paths.

The music is very fitting and the stories have been interesting to see to the very end.  I can not wait for the new game to come out.

I have to say that I was impressed when I played the demo of the first game at Walmart and it had full voice acting since it is a DS game.

What confuses people is the gameplay.  You don't really solve or detect anything related to the story, instead people give you odd puzzles thoughout the story.  For example, you might bump into a character A who's a baker--he'll give you a puzzle (brain teaser) and you'll have to solve it to get him to talk.  You really don't "solve" anything--or at least in the the first two games you don't.

Basically it's for nutters that enjoy brain teasers like me.

The games are, basically, a great collection of brain teasers and puzzles.

Separate from that, you've got a fun story, told through a combination of amazing animation, great still drawings and some mighty fine voice over work.

If any one of these were taken by themselves, it'd be an /okay/ product.  But everything together is awesome.

Actually, I take that back - the movie is missing the brain teasers and I'm sure it's going to be awesome.

I love the Professor Layton series, too.  I love the art work, the animation, the characters, and pretty much everything else about it.  It also makes me all the more excited for a possible, eventual release of Ni no Kuni. :D

I'd love to see a console version of Professor Layton, or to at least see the first game released on Wii Ware a la Phoenix Wright.

How come I just found  out that this game is coming out so soon?  I'll blame it on work.

grumble-grumble.

So, we got the game in last Wednesday.  I was off, but noticed it was in on Thursday.  The previous titles did not have a hard street date, so I was surprised to see that this game came in a box with a big, green label saying "DO NOT SELL BEFORE 09/12/2010".  I scanned the game at a register to see if the sale was blocked, as most products (movies, books, games, etc.) with a street date are... It wasn't!  Well, I went to our internal computer system and looked it up to see if it showed a Street Date or a Ship Date... Sadly, it showed a Street Date of 09/12/2010.

Not wanting to lose my job, I stuck the game back in the box and locked it back in the back room with the other street-dated product - however, I moved it a bit to the side as everything else is dated for Tuesday and this was dated for Sunday.

I go out there tonight to pick me up a copy (getting with management so they'd know where to get it without trying to dig through all the other boxes of street-dated product.  They even make a note of the 09/12 date (because Nintendo is about the only ones to do Sunday releases).

I go up to the front register to check out... "SALE NOT ALLOWED".  WTF is this crap?  Some kind of sick, twisted joke by Home Office, knowing this is the one thing that makes me happy?

Grrr.

Just finished The Unwound Future last night.  Great story...very bittersweet; it actually made me a little sad.  It's not very often that video games ellicit that sort of reaction from me.

Here's hoping that the Spectre's Flute makes it's way over here.  The Japanese launch trailer makes it look incredible.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfjzDEZi81I

Just finished it myself, score of 5000ish.  There's a couple puzzles (I can think of five or so) that simply didn't make any sense or had multiple answers that could've worked.

Hopefully after Flute, we'll see Prefessor Layton 3DS.  :)
