Board Gaming
« on: December 13, 2008, 04:43:46 AM »
Anyone here got the system known as "a table"? There's some pretty good games for it though it seems to be typecast as a party game system. Online play is also seriously lacking, none of the games for it have a built-in online mode and if you want that you have to buy one of the ports to other systems.

Er, more seriously, lately we've been playing Agricola a lot, before that we've been using Puerto Rico mostly. After those games it was impossible to go back to the mainstream Settlers of Catan as the randomness becomes a total chore once you're used to games with more deterministic gameplay.

Anyone else playing board games that go beyond the standard fare?

Nope. Monopoly, Risk, Clue, Chess, Checkers, Pictionary, and a handful of card games. Just the classics.

Does Stratego count as "beyond the standard fare"?

I love that game. :)
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Arkham Horror and its expansion packs are great.

I also partake in a few good card games, such as "Call of Cthulhu" and "Give Me The Brain".

For initiation I'd say go with Puerto Rico or even just Settlers first (PR is much better but Settlers might be easier for an introduction, may not be necessary though). Agricola's manual is total crap and would probably scare you off pretty quickly.

I have Settlers, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride.  That last one is my family's favorite, so I don't often get a chance to play the others.  Friends of mine have introduced me to a few others, including Tigris & Euphrates.  I thought I liked that one at first, but eventually I realized that I hated it instead.  Nothing else especially notable comes to mind.

Except I would need more people to play with other than me haha. My closest geeky/nerdy friends are more into videogames, so it's pretty much a dead end.

I love board games of all kinds. There is still something about sitting down with family to play a game without a TV. Some of my favorites are:

-Monopoly
-Cranium
-Malarkey
-Pictionary

Well, there's a PC version of Puerto Rico, it even comes with extra buildings for the main game.

<Serious answer to joke question>
There are technically ways of doing it, but you really can't play Risk with fewer than 3 people.

Diplomacy. I love that game. I can't recommend it enough. Very little of that game is left to chance. Very strategic. Excellant stuff.

Settlers of Catan is interesting game. I've only played it twice but it was enjoyable. Puerto Rico I played once but wasn't that crazy over it.

I'd like to.  I was hesitant in the past because I was concerned about references to slavery in the game, but I looked at it again thanks to this thread and learned that that's just some crude slang some players use.

I have played quite a bit of Settlers over the past year and a half, I also have Carcassonne and a couple of expansions, which I enjoy more than Settlers, also have Power Grid but I haven't had a chance to play and will be getting Pandemic for Christmas.
