Namco Bandai Discusses Tales Series on Wii
« on: November 11, 2008, 12:41:26 PM »
A Siliconera interview reveals information on returning locales and characters along with an interesting detail that fans of the original should enjoy.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=17168

In an interview late last month, Siliconera spoke with Andy Tsai, localization producer at Namco Bandai Japan, and Minako Takahashi, localization producer at Namco Bandai USA, about the latest Tales game, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

Unlike other Tales games, this new addition continues where its GameCube predecessor left off. The two worlds of Vlvarant and Tethe’alla collided, resulting in social disparity and weather anomalies that have brought "fear and anxiety" to the population.

Familiar aspects of the game remain such as the appearance of Grade Shops and higher difficulty settings upon completion of the game, along with old locations and characters. Namco has also included a feature that unlocks a small gift for the player to show their thanks when a GC memory card containing a finished Tales of Symphonia save file is inserted into the Wii.

Luin and Triet, are two areas that will be revisited, however they will not be identical and will be "both familiar and different" for players. While most of the original cast returns, the main protagonist from the original, Lloyd, has been replaced by a new character, Emil, who is described as "an introvert" and "very unsure of himself".

Motion control will be utilized for four different shortcuts in battle by swinging the Nunchuk or the Wii Remote vertically or horizontally. Additionally, this iteration's Sorcerer's Ring will take use of the aiming abilities of the Wii Remote's pointer.

While the battle system remains mostly the same from the first Symphonia, a monster catching system has been added. According to Namco, monsters have always played a vital role and with Dawn of the New World they wanted to "utilize them in ways that have never been attempted". Players will be able to "form pacts" and fight with over 200 different monsters adding a new strategic element to fighting that was not present in past Tales titles.

Completion of the game will reveal another new feature not present in the other games: the ability to achieve multiple endings. There are three possible endings, one of which will require "time and dedication." However, no further details were released.

Wait, does that mean you have to beat it once to even get the option to get another ending?

I don't think I discovered any of the real secrets in the first ToS, didn't even know there are alternate costumes until I read it here...

Oh well that's just fucken great, never heard of a Japanese production featuring a character like that before.

KDR, the best secret in ToS is when you make Zelos your lead and fill the rest of the party with Raine, Colette and Sheena and enter a battle. He wins the best title.

Allowing Lloyd+Kratos to have the overdue inappropriate father-son relationship they've always wanted.

Amazon doesn't list the game at all here. Sounds like the release will be far off again, if it happens at all.

I got my copy from GameStop.  Pre-ordered.  The GameStop I trust.  They had my name on a post-it note on it.  Many GameStop/affiliated stores will receive their games the day after the ship date since they arrive by 1-day UPS shipping.  The bigger casual stores... I don't count on them unless the game shows up in their Sunday ad with a specific date.

*shrugs*

There's nothing in this interview that I haven't heard already on several other sites, but it's good I suppose that you got it.  The game looks great, though, and as soon as I get my Wii back (it's been on loan to my best friend since E3 2008.  Take a guess why.) I'll look forward to playing my copy.  I'm glad the English dev team took the time to add the gesture  shortcuts, because looking at the manual the original shortcuts are a disaster.  Really, what genius thought that mapping them to the D-Pad when your thumb is below it on the A button and your trigger finger underneath on the B button was a great idea?  Bleh.

D-pad works well.  Especially as a supplement to your primary B-button skills which should be carefully chosen anyway as they're the most used.

Whoever that genius was, still is a genius.

Meh, dpad shortcuts, c-stick shortcuts, these are off-hand commands you don't use with a lot of exact timing (I think the AI characters will sometimes run to a safe spot before they start to cast the requested spell so timing doesn't matter that much).

Over here Gamestop tends to be slow since they obey the street date and only sell earlier as a reaction to others breaking it while other stores don't seem to care about any street dates and just throw the things on the shelves as they arrive or something.

Man, I finally got my Wii back after about 4 months out of loan.  It's been so long since I've held a Wiimote that I'd forgotten how small the thing is.  Yeah, I wouldn't use the D-Pad shortcuts for any moves I'd execute as Emil, but it is handy enough to map teammate spells to for quick access.  The motion shortcuts work well, too.
