Sony patents the Break away controller
« on: October 30, 2008, 09:06:45 AM »
After looking at this, I can't believe that people mocked and laughed at Nintendo when they showed off the Wii remote and Nunchuk.

Most of these pattens looks very similar to what the Wii Remote and Nunchuk accomplish except the PSeye functionality. The button face plates removes the requirements of extra controllers but I think that's a messy way to do it and I think face plates are more prone to be lost and might even be easier to break.

Personally I still like Nintendo's approach of having separate controller attachments using Wii remote's expansion port.

One with a different shape:

It requires the Eye Toy to listen to the ultra sonic eminations from the controller. My dog will love this idea.

Seriously though, I think its kinda sucky to require a device such as the Eye Toy. At least with the Wii the sensor bar isn't 'required', just two sources of infrared.

To me, it would make more sense to do this for the PS2.

That won't work silks since those controllers probably use a bluetooth connection and require a microphone(which the PSeye has) for the ultrasonic waves that the controllers emit. I'm sure if it was PS2 then sony would have to have RF and there might be issues since both controllers are wireless.

Very good point.  Now, for the bluetooth stuff I'm sure that Sony could make a bluetooth plugin that would be put in the controller slot, but the microphone might be a different story.

I've never understood why Sony didn't augment the PS2 to better combat the Wii, since the PS2 install base is so large.

Because it would segment a huge existing market, the Eyetoy didn't take off well in the US and I believe it was a somewhat marginal impact in Europe.  Also Sony doesn't need help with the PS2 they need help with the PS3 but unfortunately everybody is going to be ticked off with a 3rd controller redesign. I have a feeling that Sony will tweak this patten up a lot and make it PS4 tech which would be a much better viable strategy since just look at Nintendo they forced the Wii remote standard, sure some games use a traditional control scheme with either NES style Wii remote, gamecube or classic controller  but about 95% of the games on Wii uses the new controller standard.

You saw it here, first.  Sony will invent motion gaming and be the first to bring it to the mainstream.

The new generation doesn't start until Sony says it does.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

If manufactured, this would easily be the most confusing controller ever made.

I don't really think that segmenting the PS2 market would be a concern at this point.  It's all gravy with that system.  I'm thinking it'd be another checkmark vs. the Wii, as in, "Look, we already have all these great PS2 games, and we can do motion control just like the Wii, so you don't need to buy one."  The challenge would be to make compelling software for it, but Sony could do it and I'm sure they could convince a couple of third-parties to do it too.

No the faceplates and different control configurations will confuse the hell out of everyone, and what if someone breaks or loses the face plates by accident!

Ok, Sony really has to die. I mean, come on! How many ripoffs can we count?

Is anyone keeping the numbers?

It looks even more hideously un-ergonomic than the dual-shock!  Sony truly hates their customers...
