I don't understand? Isn't it better to have a detailed plan, with small realistic steps, then an overarching ambition with no form of compass?

I'm just going on personal experience.  Nothing ever seems to go exactly as planned so I try to be flexible and roll with the punches.  I guess I see people have one-shot plans blow up and the idea of having everything you've worked for turn to sh!t is depressing.  The Olympics were on recently and some people clearly have a plan to win the gold and they realistically only have one shot at it and tons of them blow it.  But if your goal is to compete in the Olympics and do your best then you don't fail - medal or not.  You would be more content with eighth then the guy who had to win would be with fourth.

It might just be what works for me.  I'm not very competitive.  Part of it might be that I don't win very often so having more personal goals is how I can avoid being disappointed all the time.  Part of it I know is I'm too damn mature and responsible so quiting my job to fully pursue a music career seems too risky.

Though I have realized I don't like my job and my brother is determined that if my film isn't selected by any festivals and isn't picked up for any distribution we'll do it ourselves as a direct-to-DVD release and we're going to make his movie idea next.  If we can we'd like to make movies for a living.  We don't have to be rich but if we could make the same amount of money we already make now that would be great.  Again though that's a little more low key.  I don't need to be the big millionaire superstar.  I just want to make good films.  Doing that for a job would give me more time to do it.

Hey didn't we have one of these a while back? "What is your dream?"

I will one day have my own animal television show! You'll see! You'll all see... That's my ultimate goal, I have smaller goals a few I have already achieved. But by the end of the year I hope to land it least one print job, and one commercial!

I like that KashogiStogi wants to make a real difference and help people in the world. I'm all for it, and love to help people to, but it seems like a process that is not adventurous enough for me. I'd much rather protect an old lady from a knife wielding maniac, though very small scale compared to yours, I'd be more satisfied with that.

Nintendo players and One Piece readers, just better people.

I'm majoring in art right now.  I guess you would have to call me a surrealist.  I would like to do something with my art in life.

I only really want a modest living.  Also long I can pay my bills and still have just a little cash left over, i'll be happy.

well I've changed my lifes goals so much over the years I am not so sure I really know what I want anymore. Aside from the simple life I really desperately seek all I want from life is to live in my own house with just my wife and nobody else. I'd really love it if I could live off the land so to speak and never have to work for someone else again (the way things look my dream is coming half true) and maybe someday learn to have fun.

Same here.  I used to be really ambitious and have such high aspirations, but I'm over that now.  I think I could very comfortably live on $35,000/year (ie - nice apartment, car, vacations, etc.), considering I save most of my money.

Right now I just really want to get my degree and get out of school.  I'm so sick of it.  This is my 6th year in college.  I've taken 2 semesters off and changed my major twice, but I'm finally going to finish in May and get that ridiculously expensive piece of paper that says, "Hi, I'm employable."

After that, I want to live on my own, which is harder than it sounds.  New Jersey is so damn expensive.  My county is relatively cheap (meaning a 1 bedroom apartment costs ~$800/month), but there are absolutely no jobs here outside of the healthcare and service industries.  If I live near where I go to school, which is more technology and science oriented, that's gonna be at least $1000/month for an apartment.  And this is if I can find a job in a state where unemployment just reached 6%.  My sister-in-law can get me a job at News Corp. in New York once I have my degree, but I don't know how I can live in or near Manhattan on an entry level salary.

So, yeah.  Finish school, get a job, get an apartment.  Not very lofty goals, but they're not exactly going to come by easily.
