Anybody buying NHL 09 for the 360?
« on: September 09, 2008, 05:58:51 PM »
I'll be picking up NHL 09 for 360 in the next few days (next week at the latest, I may wait to see if anybody has it on sale next week).  Is anybody else picking it up?  I'd love to play some of you online (even though I'm horrible).

It's one of the games I plan on buying when I buy a 360, but that won't be until next month.

I got the 360 and the game. I'm practicing NHL 09 whenever I can tear myself away from Geometry Wars, so I'm not getting that much practice, but I hope to be able to play soon.

You bet.  Have you figured out how to score?  I'm playing Be A Pro mode and I can get the odd assist, but I can't score for the life of me.  And that's not good when I'm a left winger.

Good to know it's not just me having trouble scoring. I managed to score three times in my last game, the first one I won, but that was with 10 minute periods. I've had some success with one-timers but those are probably a lot harder to pull off when you only control one player.

A buddy of mine who bought the game actually figured out how to score, and said that he was score at a clip of about six goals a game.  I recall that he said you actually have to work a little to set up scoring plays. You can't just ride in there like a one-man army, or consistently go to the corner trying to set up one-timers with a guy in front of the goal.

I think the key is to move the puck around the perimeter quickly.  Get a guy down low, then pass it up to one defenseman by the blue line, have him pass it across to the other defenseman, and then pass it quickly to a guy cutting in front of the net.  In other words, you have to keep the defense on its heels with rapid puck movement (just like real hockey).

Let your team set up in the offensive zone, and then pass it around - A LOT.  I'm going to try this to see if I get any different results.

Yeah, most of my goals came from a lot of movement in the offensive zone as opposed to letting loose as soon as I cross the blue line. Getting past the defenders is hard enough as it is without trying to spend a lot of time in there, though, but I guess that's what I get for always playing the Penguins.

I've been scoring a bit more.  I just try to pass it, A LOT.

Anybody playing Be A Pro mode?  I love it, but damn I get no experience points whatsoever.  I've made it up to the 2nd line of my AHL affiliate, though.

Are people seriously excited about ice hockey as a vidya game? Ice hockey is so lame, skating is for girls. Everyone knows that BMX is whats cool these days, when's BMX 97 coming out on 360?

I thought I was finally getting the hang of this, I was doing well, and then I lose 6-0.

I downloaded the demo. I haven't played an NHL game since 2001. The first time thing that took me by surprise was the shooting; using the right stick takes time to get use to. The presentation seems pretty good, except when they show the referee or players on ice. The frames per second drops and the referee's eyes freak me out. I'm so bad at shootouts; I lost both times.

It's fun but I can't see myself wanting to buy it.

You have to put some time into it to get the hang of it, for sure.  But it's by far the best 3D hockey game I've ever played.

I think what's tripping me up is the computer's ability to learn what I do, I find something that works and I keep doing it but it works less and less over time until it doesn't work at all. I need to learn to mix it up a bit.

You gotta mix it up.  I try one-timers, but I also try stuffing it in up close as well as slapshots from high in the offensize zone.  I'll also take the puck all the way around the back of the net, as well.

I just subscribed to NHL GameCenter Live, the service that lets you watch almost all of the NHL games online, so maybe watching the Flyers games will give me some ideas on how to play this.

I'd personally suggest watching San Jose Sharks games (3-0, but who's counting?), but that's just me.

Well the Flyers play the Sharks Saturday so there you go. Maybe if Biron doesn't give up 4 in the 1st period like he did against the Rangers they'll have a shot.

I think I've finally got it. I saw how well the Browns did on Monday Night Football wearing alternate uniforms, so I switched to alternate uniforms in this and it worked, I'm undefeated since the switch. Switching goalies may have had something to do with it too, Nittymaki has only given up 2 goals in the last 2 games as opposed to the 4 per game Biron was averaging.

Do you have it set on Pro or Rookie?  I think there's a huge difference.

I never played on Rookie, I've been playing on Pro the whole time I've been playing the game.

I originally had it set on Pro, but I think I accidentally set it to Rookie, which is why I'm suddenly scoring.  On Rookie the AI doesn't even play defense.

Best sports sim I've ever played. Incredible game - played it on a friend's 360. Almost tempted to buy a console just for this title. Too bad I'm not interested in any other 360 or PS3 game.
