The name?....Tetra. Tetra is a prefix which stands for "Four." Looking through all the facets of the game, I cannot find a reasonable explaination to Tetra's name being Tetra. Is there a deeper meaning to this name usage or am I searching in too deep?

hmmm...there are three sides to the triforce...and one dark space...making four triangles....
the 4 pillars of zelda are the hero, the villian, the royal family, and the sages.
a very common Goldfish family are Tetras, shes out to sea...like a fish
maybe her japanese name is different.....

Tetra? The name isn't that way for meaning, it's that it SOUNDS similar to something...

I get what Rellik's saying, but if that's the reasoning behind them naming her "Tetra", then they should have gone with a better candidate. You know, like Melba or something.

well, Melba's an actual name, but ok.

Japan is famous for assigning names to things not out of accuracy, but simply because the word sounds cool. For all we know, Bill's understanding of the word "Tetra" may exceed that of the WW dev team.

tetra is russian for four like tetris was made in russia and all the blocks have 4 squares in them and you ppl read way to much into this stuff.

lets do a little more over reading into stuff, zelda has no meaning i read somewhere that myamoto just thought it was a cool exotic girls name.
Epona, if you dont see the meaning behind that you are stupid, alot stupid.
Something i noticed right before i beat WW was ganan and sadam haha now there both dead all in the same day and stuff thats kindof odd isnt it.

Today at my school, I noticed on the back of my milk carton, it said Tetra something, and there was a triangle symbol. Not a tri-force, but a triangle with a circly design. So next time you buy one of those small milk cartons, check all over to see the Tetra symbol. I don't know if you get the same brand though.

By the way, I don't ...usually....read milk boxes....i was bored.

Since Tetra kind of means 4, maybe it could be the fourth Zelda since Zelda in Ocarina of Time. But the name thing like Melba or Melda sounds like it could work also.

NarmaK, Epona is not a word play on "pony". Epona is the Celtic goddess of horses. There is no relation with the word "pony", if that is what you meant.

I agree with cubist. coolness is always a priority in character names, often more so than any intentional symbolism.

Tetra sounds a lot cooler than Melba, sorry to say, and that's the most important detail.

Miyamoto got the name Zelda off F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife. He thought it sounded cool. I think the same goes for Tetra.

That's one of the best ways to get good names. I write stories, and I generally look through the phone book and patch up some names I like. One of my favorites yet? Jacques Scarano.

Don't ask how I know this. I just do. A Tetra is a kind of fish. Go to any pet store and ask, Tetras are one of the most common aquarium fish. The name is actually kind of appropriate because shes' a pirate and all. You know, she spends a lot of time in the water. Like a fish, you see? So... there.

Well, if you like, there are four guardians at the end of the game, but I think that's stretching it. The name choice is probably more or less coincidence.

Zelda is a cool exotic girl's name? Actually, Princess Zelda is named after Zelda, F. Scott Fitzgerald's crazy wife (Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby). Miyamoto said he simply like the sound of the name. EDIT: oops someone already said that...I guess I should read every post before replying...

As for Tetra, that was Nintendo of America that named it. NOA, unlike NCL, is famous for smart wordplay in their names...

WOW, I thought I was the only person to know that Epona was the Celtic goddess of horses.

Anyway, I think the fish theory is the best explanation for Tetra's name.

BTW did you know that Link is german for left, maybe Link got the name because he is supposed to be left handed.

If what he said is true, then that would mean NoA came up with the name and told NoJ, because her name in the Japanese version is Tetra, katakan-ized. Like so: ƒeƒgƒ‰@(That's romanized as "tetora")
