PREVIEWS: Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff
« on: July 14, 2008, 07:23:17 PM »
The first player I’m creating is Bo Jackson.

For many adult gamers raised on the NES and SNES, football has only one name: Tecmo.   After a more than decade-long hiatus (its last incarnation was 1997’s Tecmo Super Bowl for the original Playstation), the cult hit series returns on the Nintendo DS with Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff.

Since Electronic Arts now owns the NFL License, Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff uses strictly fictional teams and rosters.  However, all of its thirty-two teams are customizable, meaning that you can change your team’s city, emblem, and uniform colors, as well as edit each of your player’s names and statistics to your liking.  You can also customize your playbook with your own selection of four passing plays and four running plays.

One thing the Tecmo Super Bowl series is known for is its completely over-the-top plays (see Montana, Joe to Rice, Jerry).  Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff promises the same crazy plays, but also the opportunity to strategically use them at just the right time in order to get the edge on an opponent.  Of course, these outrageous athletic feats will be highlighted by all-new cut-scenes, a series trademark.

There are also some new features made possible by the unique abilities of the Nintendo DS hardware.  In addition to full stylus control, you’ll be able to battle other players using local multiplayer as well as Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection.  For the first time ever, you’ll be able to play other Tecmo fanatics no matter where they are.

Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff looks to be filled with nostalgic references, right down to its rock’n’roll remixes of classic musical tracks from the series.  It may very well create a new generation of Tecmo Bowl maniacs when it releases in September.

Remixes of the music from the other games in the series? That better include the opening theme from the original NES Tecmo Bowl, one of the 3 greatest game songs ever.

I want the in-game music from the NES Tecmo Super Bowl, and they'd better have a good fumble sound.

As somebody who never played this series until I caved into peer pressure and bought it on Virtual Console this is something I am seriously looking forward too.

I never could get into Madden because it was to realistic & complex for anyone new. I've always been a fan of Blitz and this feels like 2d version so I'm very happy.

This game is going to rock.  Though I can't believe there is no youtube video of a 100 yard reception.

haha, that's better.  hmm, they technically only call it 99 yards in game?  guess that's why I didn't find 'em.

Well, think about it...the drive would have to start on the 1-yard line, not the goal line.  But honestly, this is a Tecmo thread.  Thinking has no place here.  It's all about Jim Kelly tossing an 80-yard bomb to Don Beebe, then having him fumble at the goal line, then having the dude that picked it up fumble it, then having one of the Bills offensive linemen pick it up and run it in for a touchdown.  THIS...IS...TECMO

I will definitely be playing people online with this game.

Count me in for that. I wonder if custom team/player names show in online matches. Probably only with friends, not random.

I really hope that custom names carry over to all online modes.  That would rule.  I don't know what they'd do about custom statistics though...I bet they aren't allowed online, since there would be nothing to stop you from making all of your players a 99 and then whooping ass online.

You'd only whoop ass until everybody else did the same thing and there would be an equal playing field. Still, I doubt the developers would want the custom stats to become useless, so I would guess they'd do the same thing EA Sports games have the option for and equalize stats for all teams online.
