My new mini notebook
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:26:55 PM »
Just got a Asus Eee PC today. It's extremely small  (slightly larger than a piece of paper folded in half) and light (about 2 pounds) and it suits my portable needs perfectly.

The resolution is low and the touchpad is too small, but I don't care because it's much easier to browse the web and read email on this than a phone or a blackberry.

It's also cheap enough that I won't cry if it gets lost or smashed.

The screen is 800x480 which is a little low, but it has an external VGA port plus, I installed Opera and scaled the zoom down to 80% and it displays wider web pages without a horizontal scroll bar.

Flash9 works very well, full screen video plays fairly smooth.

Xandros Linux. Although I may need to make a XP install on an SD card for work. I also may try Ubuntu MID edition http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile on this. It came with a restore DVD so I can always go back with the help of an external DVD ROM.

WELCOME! I've had mine for about a month. Did you get the 900 or the 901?

I got the 701 because I couldn't justify paying $150 more for the bigger screen especially with a new 9xx series model not too far away. the higher res would be nice though.

I've been considering one of these things but I already have three laptops so I really shouldn't.

I bought one before a trip overseas, and it was perfect for web browsing and Skype.  It's really got everything you need in a laptop.

I haven't touched mine in almost 3 months though.

netbump! I upgraded my software on the eeepc 701 to eeebuntu 8.10

Much better wireless and power management, plus smoother flash video.
