LTTP!

I recently upgraded the video card in my computer and downloaded the Quake 4 demo for Linux. I liked it more than I thought I would so I picked up the full version for $20.

The story is generic as they come (Space Marine counter-attack on the alien home world) but ID Software are the ones that popularized this setting and it's very polished and well done so far.

Anyone else play this?

I played it a while back. I was kind of peeved that the manual outright gave away what would have been an incredible surprise in the story, which really needed that surprise because of how generic it is. Of course, what other kind of story can you have in a direct sequel to Quake 2?

I liked that it gave a better sense of being part of a massive assault on an alien planet than Quake 2 did while maintaining the feeling of being the lone hero. They struck a decent balance that helped with suspension of disbelief. Also, there were some really likable characters. It's just too bad all the extras were voiced by two people.

And of course the gameplay was pretty good. I particularly liked the dark matter gun. I think it was the best version of the BFG yet (it shoots black holes).

Late to the Party

So far I think it's my favorite out the games using the Doom3 engine.

As for the the game, what was the surprise that was spoilled?

I played the demo once. It seemed like it did for Quake what Doom 3 did for Doom--namely, broke it. Plus I think the Doom 3 engine has to have the ugliest graphics engine, like, ever.

The player character gets stroggified (turned into a cyborg in a brutal and bloody manner). I didn't pay much attention to the game during development, so for all I know this was always common knowledge, but I didn't find out about it until a quick glance at the manual while I installed the game.

What, you mean displaying arrays of tiles? It's no different than any other SNES game in that regard.

(Interesting factoid, Umbrellas Chronicles uses the Doom 3 engine. That explains why it's so dark and murky)

I don't believe you. Umbrella Chronicles wasn't nearly plasticy enough to be running on the Doom 3 engine.

I've had Quake 4 for the 360 for like 2 years...haven't played it in about...2 years. It is pretty cool though, and deathmatches online are nice.

I call the BFG a katamari launcher because of how it looks if the ball hits enemies in mid-flight.

I got Quake 4 on the 360 a little while ago. It came with Quake 2. I have so far spent more time with Quake 2. After playing Quake 2 on the N64 all these years I see now that what I was playing was not really Quake 2 but maybe Quake 2.5 or Quake 2 Alternate Universe Edition. Still, I love me some twitch FPS games.

I liked Quake 4 on the 360, never played it on the PC but I am not sure if my system could handle it or not. Off to check.

Ok I'm back. Nope I guess my video card isn't strong enough. Oh Well.

So I have a question, even if my video card isn't on the list of supported cards but it meets the requirements should it still run Doom 3 or Quake 4?

What video card do you have?

If it's NVidia or Ati ending in a number that's at least 500 it should work (yes, even a Radeon 8500 can play Doom 3, though not at a very high framerate).

The only PC games I really want to play are Doom 3, Quake 4, Star Wars Empire at War and Oblivion, well and Crackdown but I doubt I can run that.

So far I have not found a single website that would tell me if my system would work, the stupid thing is aside from the damn video card my machines exceeds ALL of the minimum requirements. And I never can tell if my card has the features required or not. But I did not buy it to play games but figured since I got it. Thanks for the advice KDR I'll have to try that.

It may run, but incredibly slow. 9200se is less power than a 9000 (which I used to have). WoW would be okay, so would Quake 3 based games.
