I think the first quarter should have been in to since it was so very very very late.

How can the biggest disappointment be Brawl being pushed to 2008 when Europe (can't speak for australia; TBA don't say much) knew that from mid-2007?

That's still part of 2007.  You know, the year the awards covered.  So Europe can be disappointed too.

I think Kairon did this. The winners and runner ups sound all too weird.  :P

But we knew ages before anyone else. When NOE silently announced it into 2008 then polished it over with super paper mario and metroid prime 3 instead it got a quiet bootnote of "2008". And the world went oh. It should have been mentioned.

I don't completely agree with everything (as always, I am not you guys), but I do enjoy reading the collective NWR thoughts on Nintendo's systems. Thanks guys! I love readin' this kinda stuff.

The nominees should have been listed in order to silence reader's complaints.  Personally, I'd also like to see votes each title received, so we would know if a game totally dominated a category, or if it was a close race.  (Even better, let us know how each staff member voted, so we can laugh at Kairon's picks.)

I'm also disappointed with the very slim pickings in the Staff Moments and Looking Forward To In 2008 categories.  They add some much needed personality to the awards and give readers a reason to keep on reading (especially when three games completely dominate the awards).

Other than that, not a bad job.  A little bland, but it serves its purpose.  I give it a solid B.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I didn't even realize there was staff-centric stuff this year, but I didn't participate in any of it.

I'd give all year-end awards ever an F. But I give Crimm an A.

In all seriousness now, I understand your pain Crimm. I used to be a mod and an administrator at an obscure site and we got the same crap whenever we did our game of the year awards. Even worse was that it was all user created, so people chose the games and voted for them. I say it was worse because there was always someone complaining about a game not being nominated, even though we gave them nearly two weeks so they could find a game and nominate it.

As for Mario and Sonic, I agree with Mario in that it should have gotten a nomination at the very least.

In all honesty, half of you haters haven't even tried the game for the sole reason that its Sega, so you really have no say on this.

The truth is that the game has a hidden layer of challenge wrapped in its approachability. It may look like a simplistic waggle fest, but sit down and actually try to master all the events with all the characters, complete all the missions, get all the medals and trophies and beat the worldwide champions. You'll realize that it takes a lot of skill and patience to fully master the game.

In other words, M&S is a game that deceits its haters with bright colors, simple executions and family friendly appeal, but once you try to beat it you'll learn right away that the best challenges are those are seem the simplest.

Ah, the perils of judging art, especially when it's not like everyone on the staff has played all the games in question.

If anyone else is really into classic style game music (of which Contra 4 only represents the thinnest slice) 2007's Etrian Odyssey is also most excellent.  The music is by famed composer Yuzo Koshiro (Act Raiser, Streets of Rage, Castlevania Portrait of Ruin and an appearance in the Brawl).  Next year we really ought to consider adding a list of honorable mentions under the runner up.  That game's getting hard to find though; the sequel was just released in Japan and I'm crossing my fingers for a port.

I just got back into Etrian Odyssey. I can't believe I'm having so much fun when basically all I'm doing is grinding.

Ah, the perils of judging art, especially when it's not like everyone on the staff has played all the games in question.

And as you know that became an issue when I was dropped into this.  It became apparent that nobody had played one of the games, best sound DS (Jam Sessions) and simply voted because they felt it simply MUST have good music.

I eliminated it from consideration because I felt there really wasn't anyone qualified to do the write up, and that multiple votes were throwaways.

So, to address one point, Phoenix Wright 3 actually came in third.  I'll see if I can dig up the voting, but I think the previous person in charge of this process has it.

Don't lie! You clearly said that you had absolutely no interest on the game, much less OWN it.

Better luck next time...
