wii and the rts
« on: February 09, 2008, 01:57:59 PM »
am i crazy or is this the perfect console for an rts?  i love them, im sure most of you do as well, and there few and far between on consoles.  i would love to see starcraft 2 or world in conflict or even games that aren't nessesaraly in the rts vein but close like sim city or Caesar 4 or something like that.

any how if there have been topics like this sorry but im new to the fourm so i just thought i would put my 2 cents in and see what people thought.

I think people would agree unanimously and I think its a shame that Firaxis stopped on the Wii version of Civilization Revolution just because they made the interface toward PS3 and X360 territory.

While the control would work I think the display wouldn't.  A really busy RTS needs a lot of display real estate, so I think HD would almost be mandatory.

The controls would work but I doubt as well as a mouse or touch screen. I wouldn't want to play a strategy game on a console anyway, I much prefer handhelds and PCs, and also I don't really like real-time strategy, I'm more of a turn-based strategy fan.

Well, C&C and Starcraft worked with 640x480... With 3d it's not much of an issue anyway since you can just zoom and as SupCom and Spring showed you can use icons above a certain zoom level to preserve the overview (though most RTSes just limit your zoom to something ridiculously large...).

I think the DS probably has a better control scheme for RTS games than the Wii does. It could still work on the Wii, though. Hopefully we'll see something materialize for it eventually.
is your sanity...

The DS has a really low resolution though, lower than Warcraft or C&C. Can't fit much interface on there. Also more CPU = better unit AI. Though maybe unit AI is mostly a problem with japanese devs who think you can reach any point by just moving straight towards it.
