Sad times [my XBOX360 died]
« on: January 20, 2008, 03:30:28 PM »
My Xbox 360 Elite finally died today. It was looking pretty sick so I'm not surprised. Believe it or not it was NOT the red rings of doom. In fact I got no red lights. At first it would take 10 seconds or so for my 360 console to even start booting, and that time got longer and longer. Now it won't even boot at all even when the green power light is on (It won't read the controller either), and after a couple minutes it shuts itself off. So now I have to 3-5 days to get the return box and up to 3 weeks for it to be sent back. Sad times. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

It was bound to happen eventually, one way or another.

I know your 360 didn't die by RRoD, but I feel this article may still be relevant.

There are also other significantly high failure rates in other areas, like the DVD.

Well, all I have to say is...You wouldn't be a 360 owner if your console didn't die at least once!

And that's why I'm not a 360 owner (well, among many reasons).

The customer service was pretty good, so I can't complain about that. Then again I'm not thrilled about a 3 week delay, but at least I didn't need to jump through some hoops to get it replaced. Kind of odd that I didn't get any red errors, never heard of a 360 with quite this problem.

Well GP when my 360 died I sent it out to the UPS store on roughly about Dec 7th and I got it back on my birthday which was Dec 21st so if your lucky you will get it in 2 weeks but I don't know if yours will take longer since its an elite.

Edit: But what sucks is you won't be able to get undertow for free since it will be free from the 23- 27th.

When you get your console back be sure to bug them about Undertow via customer service.  That's just not fair.

Or if you have any friends with a 360 go over their house on one of those days with your hard drive (since you just put in your console without any faceplates or any accessories to ship out to MS) and download it from their 360 barring the friend's permission of course.

Go buy an Arcade 360 from Wal-Mart, and return it when you get your old one back, or within 30 days if you don't get yours back soon enough. Actually, buy one at Target, since I'm pretty sure their return policy is 90 days. GameStop's is 7, so don't even consider them.

I'm still trying to save up enough to buy a new HDTV and 360 Arcade to replace my original Core (well my original Core's replacement anyway).  Stupid HDMI and your tempting ONE CORD FOR EVERYTHING making me want to waste several hundred dollars!

If your talking about a HDMI cable you can go to monoprice.com and purchase one for a good 5 - 10 US dollars.

Oh I know that, that's where I got my my HDMI cable for my PS3.  I just meant I have an old model 360 without an HDMI port, and since I'm gonna spend all this money on a new HDTV, I figured I might as well spend a couple hundred extra and buy a new 360 with HDMI capability.

Thanks for lookin' out though.

It still surprises me that anyone would pay so much for a freaking cable, especially with it available for so much cheaper.  But I suppose the majority of people don't surf the net as much as I do, as the only place I've heard of monoprice is at message boards.

Mav I think its either

1. People are lazy and impatient so they want it now and don't care if they they are going to pay 30 - 100 dollars for one.

2. Since it's high definition people think its a fair price based on the perception where its HD which equals to its more expensive! Which is what companies try to go after to make a insanely large profit margin.

The irony is I initially jumped from a Nintendo and Sony owner to a Nintendo and MS owner then eventually Sony again (console wise) because I got burned with a PS2 that was acting up a lot but didn't fully break and then here I go with a 360 that lasted about for a 1 1/2 years which is unacceptable for a 400 dollar machine.

I've never really understood the Windows hate, I've always liked it just fine.  More than a Mac, and I'm not nerdy enough to embrace Linux.  I don't even have any problems with Vista.  But I do agree MS made some super unreliable crap this generation with the 360.  I love my 360, and the games I can play on it, but I know the failure rate has to be like... 80% on these freaking things.

A lot of the windows hate has to do with how notoriously unstable and unsecure it is. BSOD (Blue screens of death) were notoriously common in Windows systems prior to XP, and Windows is also more susceptible to viruses and many other problems than other OSes are. Linux and Mac aren't invincible either, but they are a heck of a lot more stable and reliable. Linux has the idea of root passwords in order to make systems changes, whereas in windows that isn't the case. Any user can install something without needing to be an administrator.

Another reason for the Windows hatred is because it is a monopoly with 90+% marketshare, and some people don't like the idea of monopolies and want there to be competition and balance in the market so that one company doesn't have all the power. This is the exact same reason why so many people hate Wal-mart and picket it whenever it is going to come to their neighborhood.

Windows is "more susceptible" to viruses than Linux or Mac for one reason - because it's the most popular. The people making these viruses build them on a machine running Windows, for Windows. I don't think it's really the same with Wal-Mart. I shop at Wal-Mart, because I have to (not because they have a monopoly, since they don't have one - but because there's about 30 of them in my county!), but I hate the company with a passion.

Did you fail to read the entirety of my post? Being less popular is NOT the only reason why Linux is more secure. Windows does not have root.

Actually, Windows DOES have a root account.  It is just called Administrator.  However, your point stands.  Linux is naturally set up for 99% of users like this:

A user gets an account on the system.

They are then given the folder "/home/username/"

Within "/home/username/", all their applications settings, desktop icons, and general documents are saved.

Now that they have been given that folder, they cannot edit anywhere at all outside of the that folder.  Unless they explicitly provide the root password.

All applications and system files are stored everywhere but "/home/"

So really, *nix security is pretty simple, but works great.   In contrast to Windows' monolith of bureaucratic and still broken security. Here is a prime example of what I am talking about:

To be far, many schools and corporations do set Windows up like I just described.  It can be done.  But you still have to deal with the security prompts and incompatibility becomes a problem with these new found security settings.

Thank you for your post, DAaaMan64. I hear people say "linux is only more secure than windows because no one uses it" all the time, and yes, I admit that is one of the reasons, but there are other reasons why linux is more secure. So again, thank you for pointing a few of those reasons out.

Another thing is that with Linux being completely open source, that means you can fix security problems yourself rather than wait for whenever MS gets around to it.
