March debut for PES 2008 for Wii

Konami unveils further information on all-new bespoke PES 2008 for Nintendo system   Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced a late March release date for its eagerly-awaited PES 2008 for Wiiā„¢.

Created specifically to make full use of the Wii’s unique control system, PES 2008 brings all the realism of Pro Evolution Soccer to the Nintendo machine, but with a more ā€˜team-orientated’ control system. The Wii game mirrors the real sport’s use of open space and the exploitation of defensive lapses and accurate passes essential in creating scoring opportunities. The Wii version of PES 2008 expands on these elements, with the use of the Nunchuck and Wii Remote controllers giving the player control over both the player on the ball, and those around him.

Using a point and drag system, the player uses the Wii Remote to guide the player with the ball, and perform all the skill moves and close control with subtle movements of their hand. Instantly, the Wii Remote is used to point at nearby players to select them to receive a pass or to latch on to a through-ball. The Remote can also be used to steer the run of the receiving player, giving extra control as they thread through masses of defenders or run into open space.

The new system gives the player full control over their team, and allows the man marking of specific threats, while shakes of the Wii Nunchuk can be used to perform sliding tackles, and send the goal keeper out to clear a loose ball. The strategic elements are also easily accessed, with the directional controls of the Wii Remote used to activate tactical plays and spring counter attacks or send players tracking back.

PES 2008 for Wii features six game modes, spanning Match, League and Cup elements, and Training and Trade section. The new version also features an exclusive ā€˜Champions Road’ competition, wherein players take their chosen team to compete in league competitions all over the world. The idea of the Champions Road tournament is to come top in every league, and build a team by receiving players from recently defeated sides.

Experience points are added to all used players after a match, and bolster the attacking ability, technique and stamina. Extra skills can also be unlocked, allowing users to piece together a ā€˜Dream Team’ that constantly grows as they become more successful. Additional mini-tasks are also randomly set during the course of a Champions Road match, too, such as scoring a hat-trick, and succeeding allows the player to add higher-rated players to their team.

Full Mii support is also present, and users can integrate up to 16 pre-defined Miis into a team, while the ever-changing teams can be stored on to the Wii Remote and switched between two linked Remotes. PES 2008 also has a strong online element, allowing users to play ā€˜Free Matches’ against unknown opponents, or ā€˜Friend Matches’ against people on the Wii’s Friends list. Team data can also be sent to friends via the console’s WiiConnect24 system.

ā€œIt was vital that the Wii version of PES 2008 made full use of the hardware’s innovative control system, and we are extremely pleased with what the team has come up with,ā€ commented Jon Murphy, Pro Evolution Soccer Team Leader. ā€œIt feels as if you have total control over the entire team and the use of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to both implement moves and send players into space or off to make runs is remarkably intuitive. It adds a new layer of realism, and makes this Wii version an essential PES experience.ā€

No. I read PES because it is synonymous with quality. Really not sure about this new control system, it could be awesome, but I hope they include the classic controls in case it's not.

against people on the Wii's Friend List

So...does this mean this system-based friend codes instead of game-based?

It's hard for me to care about soccer, but this sounds like a truly valiant effort to make this game work on Wii and use a lot of cool Wii features.  When I read "Mii support", I assume the usual pandering trick of attaching a Mii to your save file.  Instead, you can create entire teams full of Miis.

Waaaaaaay better. FIFA sells based on having a bajillion actual teams with updated rosters really. IGN has a free vid with a control demonstration if anyone cares to look, seems fantastic.

Whoa.. point and click soccer! Definitely interesting - I'm keeping my eye on this one. Though it does seem like there's a lot of micromanaging, especially the part where you use the pointer to move other players while you're controlling your own guy. The main problem with this should be that it isn't as smooth running, but it flowed pretty well in the videos.

I almost wish I cared about this (or any) sport, because this looks like the best use of the Wii controller yet.  It's inspiring.

If this works EA should steal it and use it for NHL 09 so I could enjoy it instead of not caring the slightest bit.

No, I'm just a hockey fan who knows that EA is the most likely developer to bring an NHL game to the Wii.

OMG, I just watched the video of this game, and damn does this look complicated. If this sells and works well, I can see EA stealing & implementing this in some sort of way into not only FIFA, but NHL, NBA and NFL games too.

They might still have traditional mode, but I could see an option for point & click mode too.
I wonder who would be the superior player in an NHL, NBA or NFL Traditional vs P&C player? I think its obvious that the P&C player is likely to win in a VS. match in Soccer.

In an NBA game, i could make another player on my team set up a pick, position himself for an alleyoup or set up outside for a quick 3 pointer.
on defense, I could fix miss matches on the fly and position my players to block a potential lane.

In and NFL game I could control who I want my blockers to block especially on a break away play or punt/kick off return and I could change the route of my receivers on the fly and then lead them with the pass since it will go where I point.
On defense, I could control my safety so that he is not out of position and allow a HUGE play to happen and control my linebackers on the fly depending on if its a run or pass play.

In NHL, well I don't know much about the NHL so I'll let you hockey fans fill in the possibilities on that one

I think Konami just opened up a whole new way to play Sports games on the Wii and maybe now some of the Nintendo fans will start buying Sports games.
Just by watching the video, I think they have just brought a whole new level depth to the gameplay that AI was never able to fulfill.
