For example, in the Metroid screen we see Samus fighting RIDLEY.

In the Starfox 64 screen we see Falco's picture indicating that he's been hit and says "Oh man, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BACK OFF!"

So there you have it: Ridley's in, Falco's out :p .

I was going to say the same thing.  Ridley is there for a reason.  If not a playable character, then he's a SSE boss.

Ridley probably is an SSE boss.  This mode is really cool because there are a lot of games I like to try but not really buy.  I'm just wondering how they are fitting all this stuff unto the disc.  I know that most of the older games are itty bitty but they just keep shelling out fully fleshed out content modes.  If the disc was a pizza box it would be about to explode.

Well, the Wii can handle 9GB discs, and SSBM only used less than 1GB if you don't include the bonus movie, which was pretty pointless and took up as much space as half of the rest of the game.

Hey, the original Super Mario Brothers can be beat in less than 5 minutes.  So theoretically, even if they list that one as a demo, you could still beat the game.

I love the fact that they are giving me demos.  I'd never try Balloon Fight or a few others if they didn't.  Maybe I'll like them enough to buy the full VC game.  Here's hoping this is a sign that Earthbound is coming to the VC in the US.  I will buy that and 0 & 2 if they ever show up as well.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I did note that Lucas isn't in Mother 2, but Ness is.  I also laughed at Super Metroid being chosen over the original Metroid.  Sakurai doesn't think the original is a masterpiece, either.

Edit:  I just noticed the screenshots of Ice Climber, Zelda, and Star Fox 64 are different on the Japanese site, too.  That's weird.

The Masterpieces are an excellent addition to the game. I remember someone brought up a similar idea on an old board I used to frequent. Nostalgia for the win. Granted, I'm probably not going to play any of these games.... unless speed-running the levels and completing the demos unlocks something. That'd be evil considering how difficult some of the old games are though I can totally see certain trophies being unlocked by having particular VC games downloaded which is, in fact, more evil-er. Think along the lines of the Olimar trophy from Melee except you can "cheat" and just rent/borrow a copy of the game just to unlock the trophy. Completion whores = WTF PWN3D

I like this idea, what I don't like is the time limit. Why not just put one or two levels of each game on there? For the games that can be "speedrun" will need the entire game on the disc, whereas including one or two levels depending on the size of the game would have been better IMO. And, how big is this freaking disc? Not only does it have a massive game on it with, multiple levels of battle, a sizeable character roster, tons of music, tons of unlockables, and extra coding for the online mode, it also has classic games?

If Nintendo doesn't make this game able to download updates via WiiWare I will be supremely ticked off, they've seriously thought of everything else, why not the potentially best feature of the game besides the battles themselves?
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

Some games, like Earthbound, don't have "levels" per se. Timed demos make sense. You can still speedrun/complete a demo.

And those older games were extremely small by today's standards so demos would be even smaller. I don't think disc space is an issue.

Adding characters seems to make the most sense in this case, but it would also potentially cause problems since not everyone wants to pay money for extra content. For example, let's say Midna is downloadable. How would we play online with the extra content if I don't have Midna on my Wii? Downloadable Events and stages are possibilities yet the same problems may apply.

In any case, I'm not a fan of downloadable updates, patches or content. Make the game right the first time and stop trying to squeeze more money out of me!

I can't believe how much is in this game.  I would have never expected that demos for classic games would also be included.  The game is literally filled with crazy stuff.

I love it so much.

I was kidding, though. I was making fun of how people are so desperate for new info that they'll look at the screens and try to find a meaning behind them.

Speaking of the Japanese site, there are some blurbs about Mother 2. Anyone have any idea what Sakurai could be saying?

That?s right, for the first time ever, you can play trial versions of these games by the miracle of Virtual Console!

That?s what Masterpieces is! Here you can relive the greatest battles of the biggest star characters through demo versions of their games.

These are demos. DEMOS, as in "samples intended to persuade you to purchase the full product". Nothing more. It's not like Animal Crossing where you got 6 retro NES games for free which could be downloaded to your GBA (some of them).

This is a feature the online VC should've had from the start. It's neat for the history aspect, but this is a thinly-veiled advertisement for VC downloads.

The only plus side I can see to this is that it would allow for Takamaru and Sukapon in the game and have their games translated for the US release so people know who they are.

And a downloadable EBA demo for the DS would be awesome...

The Japanese release is quickly approaching and I still don't know the answer to this question:  How many Wii systems can participate in an online match?  Four?  Or is it limited to two?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Squeezing money out of you by say... making a sequel with updated roster and stages and charging $50? Besides as of yet, no system has seen a SMB sequel, this would allow that tradition to continue. And not to insult but your point about people not buying the same updates is moot because this game is full of unlockables which not everyone is going to get at the same time, and the myriad of games which have dealt with the same issue on XBL say it can be overcome.

You mean this one?  It doesn't really say.  Although the use of singular opponent instead of plural opponents is a little unsettling.

So, he's basically saying that there may be demos for games that Nintendo has yet to release on the VC... This is both good and bad. Good because it means we can still get demos even if they are not on the VC. Bad because the point of all of this is to get people to buy the games right after trying them out. Once again, I hope Nintendo delivers on this aspect.

I thought the point of them being in Brawl specifically was so they would provide background for the characters; remember, it's not connected to the Wi-Fi Connection, so this isn't only a pitch to online consumers.

The problem is that the Mother 2 bit was completely removed from the U.S. page, for seemingly no reason at all...The game was released here before, what's the big deal?...Why NOA has a bitter hatred for all things Mother, I do not know... >=|

I've always seen the whole SSB series as both a tribute to Nintendo and is creative geniuses and as a walking advertisement for Nintendo products. This new feature solidifies that fact even further. Its great that we get to see the characters in their original games, but lets not deny that this is also a marketing push towards more VC sales.

I love the update, even if I've played all the games before.

It'll be good for the people who are either too ignorant/casual/young to know about various characters.  I think more games should have some history section.  (I have this (admittedly arrogant) thing about gamers who missed out on the pre-3D generations.  It's like, hello?  There were six games before FF VII!  There were pre-Solid Metal Gear games (though I do recall now that MGS DOES have a history section...), etc.)

I think it would be cool if you had to collect cartridges like how you have to collect trophies and music CDs.  I like collecting.  Must be OCD or something.
