Um...

1. We have an expanded and actually cool adventure mode
2. We have a crapload of stuff to collect
3. The collectibles are actually worth collecting (stickers will offer you power ups while chances are some of the collectible trophies will also be ATs)
4. We will have a very large selection of songs (even if you don't fancy all of them the effort put into the soundtrack is astounding to say the least)
5. Counting the classic stages Brawl will have a large amount of stages to play in
6. We have a stage editor you can send to friends and get new ones from Nintendo
7. The ability to take a picture will always be present and should make for hilarity
8. Not only are all of the classic Melee modes returning (classic, home run, targets and multi man) many of them will have online play
9. Even if the number of characters end at 35 the characters included are far more creative and unique than Melee's roster
10. We have a far more inventive way of getting trophies and stickers this time around

The only thing left to know is how many characters there will be in the final game. If its above 35 then Brawl will clearly be the biggest Nintendo game yet.

You say that as if Brawl is going to be bare bones release like the original was.

Oh also I like Link's new older voice. Actually its just nice to see that the Melee voices aren't all being dumped on Brawl. They just better make sure they actually have Luigi's nasal voice this time instead of a slightly higher pitched Mario like Melee had.

Agreed.  It's nice to hear the all new voice work- even Peach's "ha-cha" shout when she bumps you with her hips in a new recording.  So good.

Yeah, this was an update out of left field... but looks to be reason number #79 why Brawl will likely never be ejected from my Wii all year. Wonder how long the trails last for... I think I could get my fill of Ice Climbers pretty quickly.

"If you take a liking to one of the trial versions, you can always buy the full game through the Shop Channel! You might even find a couple titles that divert your attention from Brawl for a while."

Sigh...another week of no characters.

Yeah, this isn't a very good update, it is something that should have been implemented into VC a year ago, DEMOS.

Super Mario Bros (NES)
Ice Climbers (NES)
Legend Of Zelda (NES)
Kid Icarus (NES)
Kirby's Adventure (NES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Lylat Wars (N64)

Those are the demos shown on the US Dojo. However, the Japanese site has two more titles listed:

Fire Emblem (SNES)
Mother 2 (SNES)

Hopefully, the content will be the same in both versions of the game.

Very weird update. I guess it's nice to see that, while it sucks that they don't give NES games away for free like they did with Animal crossing, the uh... idea still exists. Now I wish I hadn't bought Star Fox 64, because the demo would have been enough of that game for me... but uh.... interesting. On a more controversial note, check out the Japanese version of the page. http://www.smashbros.com/jp/gamemode/various/various23.html

Fire Emblem isn't too surprising, but they also get Earthbound! I actually hope that the US gets all the same demos as the Japanese version, even if it means they have to do a translation of FE to release it here. They should be doing that anyway!

Man, this was a weird update.

Just remember, there are some NES classics in there as demos, so expect some of the time limits on those games to be so short that all you can do is laugh at how hard they are.

Why else would Super Metroid save slots or zelda be in at all?

I don't think we're getting anymore new characters. Brawl Central seems to have info that the starting roster is 23.

But this is like, WTF? I might actually never use this. It's cool and all, but. . .I don't even know the words.

Nintendo wouldn't give you free full versions of those games, they much rather you buy them. So I think ALL will be demos.

That’s right, for the first time ever, you can play trial versions of these games by the miracle of Virtual Console!

Frankly, I am SHOCKED that some people fail to see the brilliancy of this mode.

In all honesty, I think this is a very clever and smart marketing idea. I mean, I'm sure some gamers have played SSB or Melee, seen a character and said "You know? I missed that character's game. I never played it" or have looked at an obscure character and wondered 'Where the hell did he or she came from?" and then got the hankering to discover the game. This eases up that problem, even if they have to pay for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo used this as way to see which games get the most downloads due to Brawl having them as demos and see if the interest is big enough to either bring Japan only games to the US (like Mother 1 and Mother 3) or consider making a full blown sequel (like a new Kid Icarus game).

Not only that, this is paying a lot of respect towards the games that made the SSB Brawlers popular and a MUCH better honor than a trophy with a short description or a sticker.

Again, I fail to see how some people would dismiss this.

As for no characters this week, after seeing the leaked starting roster I expected there wouldn't be anymore character updates till after launch.

I admit the one thing that could ruin the potential of this mode is not bring over some of the Japan only games or not include a game simply because it isn't on the VC system yet.

Like I said, this will encourage people beyond hardcore Nintendo fans to actually notice the characters and dig out the game. Obscure games now have the chance to be featured.

If Nintendo fails to do this they have dropped the ball on what is perhaps the best marketing move I have seen in ages.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed that it seems to be VC-centric rather than character-centric. It'd be cooler if it seemed like there was the possibility of seeing demos of games not available on the VC, or the games themselves, for the sake of history. Anything from Game & Watch to Mother 3...

I think it's kind of a neat idea, but if they limit it to games already on VC, it just feels less like a Smash Bros thing.

One thing I am worried about is that some of the characters' debuts were on the original Gameboy.

For example, the Pokemon Trainer and Pikachu made their debut in Pokemon Red, Blue, Green and Yellow. The VC service has yet to include GB games. How will their handle that?

Then there's Wario. We have two versions of Wario; the platformer antagonist and the greedy game developer. Which game will they choose to represent Wario? Not only that, like Pikachu and PT his debut was on the GB. Worst of all, what about characters who are basically villains and sidekicks in their games? Diddy is lucky because he has DKC 2, Peach and Luigi both have Super Mario Bros. 2, but poor Bowser gets nothing.

Not only that, will they include games beyond the characters' debut games, like Super Mario Bros. 2, 3 and World?

OK, I admit that Nintendo's incompetence might ruin what could be an awesome idea so here's hoping they actually planned this well.

If its well done, I stand what I said about it. If not, I will deem it the biggest opportunity loss in history.

Seriously! The number of people who are looking a gift horse in the mouth here is tremendous. And people expecting free games to go with their existing game is ridiculous (even Animal Crossing DS didn't have that, and apparently the GCN version spoiled you guys forever), though I'd imagine if Mr. Game & Watch is back (which isn't even confirmed), then they wouldn't part & parcel that.

It is odd that they wouldn't mention Mother 2 on the non-Japanese sites, as unlike Fire Emblem, that got an international release. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Japanese translation of that, but it probably won't happen unless they've had in the works. But demoing the Game Boy games aren't ridiculous, especially as this is connected to the VC in name only (Sakurai said it was offline, remember), and didn't I hear they were thinking of doing a VC-type service down the line with the DS, or was that just chatter?

Finally, I don't think every character gets their own game. What would Zelda have, that CD-I "masterpiece"?

On another topic, I'm surprised that for sh*ts and giggles no one has analyzed the meaning behind some of the games and screens shown.

For example, in the Metroid screen we see Samus fighting RIDLEY.

In the Starfox 64 screen we see Falco's picture indicating that he's been hit and says "Oh man, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BACK OFF!"

So there you have it: Ridley's in, Falco's out :p .

Yoshi's debut game is Super Mario World... =3  (Yeah, I know they might use Yoshi's Island instead...)

I just like the idea of trying to get as far as possible on the short demo time limit...
