Rare classics on XBLA?
« on: January 09, 2008, 06:09:22 AM »
So.... some rumors have been floating around that Rare's classics from the N64, namely Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie, are going to appear soon-ish on Xbox Live Arcade. This struck me as near impossible due to a couple of my perceived constraints.

1) They all run on N64 hardware. In order to bring them to the 360 they would all have to be ported due to the fact that they couldn't be legally emulated.
2) It was my perception that Nintendo owned the final product created by Rare because they were the publishers. So even though they may not own the characters or the source code, they still own the finished product.

Now I don't really know if any of this is true, but I would think that Microsoft would need a contract with Nintendo in order to even have the opportunity to do this. Anybody have any insight on this?

As odd as that would be, is it any different than how Rare has been publishing Games on the DS despite having been purchased by MS? It is very possible that MS and Nintendo have reached some sort of mutual agreement, where Nintendo will allow this to happen but probably in return for something else.

So maybe in exchange for this we might see Halo on the DS, or something like that..

It's different because Microsoft doesn't compete directly with the DS (nor do they plan to any time soon) because there's no Microsoft handheld.  Microsoft and Nintendo are direct competitors in the console market (despite what they might tell you) so you're never going to see either one give up anything with some serious cash exchanging hands.

Well the only thing I could see happening is a trade off. If it goes up on one, it also goes up on the other. In that case you would see all of the Rare classics go on both the VC as well as XBLA, probably featuring a very similar experience. I'd be happy to see that happen, though I seriously doubt it.

It could be that since the Rare games are kinda a gray area MS and Nintendo have come up with a deal so they can be on both systems, because without that understanding they couldn't be on either of them. So if that is the case, then we may see those games appear on Nintendo's VC as well.

That's actually interesting, if the titles would come to BOTH the VC and XBLA. However, doesn't it go without saying that the XBLA version would be the superior one?

If they don't edit the ROMs then both would be identical.

Nearly every re-release on XBLA is altered for at least HD support, if not all.  Several add in online multi-player, and even some add in even more.  The idea is that probably two or three VC games seem modified at all, whereas all XBLA games are.  Chances are the XBLA version would be better.  Not necessarily, though, as the deal might prohibit changes made to the software, or allow both sides to exploit said changes for their own benefit.

Bare minimum the resolution would need to be upped to 720p and Achievements would be added.

Well I think that if Nintendo came to that agreement with MS, it would actually give Nintendo the incentive to add value in order to compete with the XBLA version. Number one addition for me would be pointer support for Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. Adding online play would also be nice, but would seem to be a more likely addition to the XBLA version. If that happened, I would be forced to buy both versions

I've heard that Rare owns the textures while Nintendo owns the code. I'm sure they could go back and rewrite the engine for XBLA, they've had enough time to do so.

Personally, I was hoping Nintendo was enlisting Zoonami to to redo some stuff on the game and release a rehash on the Wii. I guess that was just fantasy island.

True. They could add different enhancements for each system and try to balance those enhancements out so that some people may even want to own it on both systems. I guess that would make them more money also by selling the game to some customers twice.... Think of Soul Calibur II where every system had a different bonus character (but Gamecube's was considered the best because it had Link).

Obviously, the XBLA version would have better graphics, but the Wii might have additional content, or something...

The story does say that Goldeneye was going to be re-worked, and remade (probley with some updated graphics too) for XBLA.  It also said something about Xbox Live support for multiplayer

I would guess it will get a similer treatment that Double Dragon got when we saw it come to XBLA

They don't need to port the game, they can emulate the N64, or at least interpret it. Konami released Castlevania SOTN for XBLA, they didn't need to talk to Sony about it.

If Perfect Dark comes to XBLA, IT BETTER HAVE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER.

EDIT: Also run WAY better than the original.

Rumor has it that GE was about to be released for XBLA but was canceled at the last moment.
My guess is that if some sort of agreement was met it will have to wait till the release of WiiWare before a simultaneous Wii/360 release.

Wait... wouldn't they also have to clear things up with the owners of the James Bond franchise? Between Rare, Nintendo, Microsoft, and whoever owns James bond I think Goldeneye is amounting to too much of a copyright nightmare to deal with, so maybe that's probably why the rumor said it was canceled.

The people at 1up shed some light.

Its a shame that MS and Nintendo can't come to an agreement. Oh, Activision currently owns the rights to Bond franchise in gaming form. Bond itself is part of MGM, which in turn has relations with Sony. Talk about strange relations...

I was just thinking about something hilarious. Apparently Microsoft completely redid Goldeneye, totally finished the project, then talked to Nintendo? Nice work retards. Wouldn't step one be talk to Nintendo then if you come to an agreement go and do the work? Either Microsoft is full of dumbasses or this story is a load of shit.

They might have thought it would be easy to do once they finished the game, who knows.  I am not sure Goldeneye would be the same mapped to new age controls though :/

Either that, or the company is so filthy rich that it can afford to fund and then abandon projects with impunity. I remember that they paid many millions of dollars for exclusive content in some game once. They can do it, because Bill Gates probably uses more money than that just to wipe his bottom every day.
