Motion blur, the new thing in games?
« on: December 13, 2007, 07:21:02 PM »
I dunno maybe this has been going on for a long time, I don't remember it if that is the case, but lately I've noticed alot of the "prettier" games are using blurring when you turn the camera whether it be an FPS or a 3rd person game. Has this been going on for awhile and I haven't noticed or is this the new technical trick to be able to better handle the visuals? At times I find it quite distracting, though not as bad as a poor framerate.

It's been around.  I'm pretty sure Twin Snakes mixed some in with bullet time Snake missile dancing.

The systems are supposed to be able to process more fps than the screens can handle, so the extra go to create motion blur for realism and stupid use of resources.

I doubt that, motion blur on consoles often devolves into blending the backbuffer over the front buffer.

They've been doing this as early as launch PS2.  If you've ever seen Orphan, you'd know this first hand.

It does seem more prevalent though lately, I mean most games are using it on next generation systems.

I just got a 360 last week, and I'm seeing this everywhere now. It's especially annoying in The Orange Box, playing through Episode 1 and everytime you turn it motion blurs the joint up. I dunno if it's because I'm on a filthy peasant SD TV, but it looks HORRIBLE. It's almost like Gordon Freeman is on the verge of passing out everytime he moves.

Don't know about Orange Box for 360 but Crysis on PC does it quite a bit.

I've got an HDTV, and the blur effect is not a problem, at least not for me. Did you play Portal? I think the blur is alot more apparent in Portal than it is in either HL2, Ep.1, and Ep.2.

I don't think there's any motion blur in Half-Life 2, but there definitely is in Portal.

So is it a technical shortcut or is it supposed to give the game more "realism"?

What kind of blur?  Intentional graphical blur?  Or the kind of blur inherent in the way the human eyes perceive 30fps/Pro-Scan games as one turns the camera to the left or right (which are more prevalent this gen thanks to modern games and modern TVs -- RE4 and Twilight Princess exhibit this phenomenon)?

Episode 2 definitely has it. I think I've noticed it too in Episode 1 and HL2, but it must be used to a minimal.

I would say that they are adding it for added "realism".

No, I am talking about something like Crysis for the PC where when you turn it smears the image. It is obviously intentional because I don't see it in every game.

Then that intentionally SUCKS cuz your eyesight shouldn't get woozy for no reason.

MGS2, 3, Twin Snakes, Shadow of the Colossus, GTA: Vice City. There must be like a switch in the PS2 that turns this effect on.

The switch is labeled "let's hide the framerate flaws".
