Problems with my XBOX 360
« on: December 12, 2007, 12:39:39 PM »
Yep, it looks as if I have become a true 360 owner .

I recently started playing Call of Duty 4 and the console was working fine. Then today when I went back to play it the console screeches then freezes. It started doing it with just CoD4. I then tested it with my other games and they all did the same thing. Hell, the console even freezes up at startup.

I've yet to receive the red ring of death and the console works on occasion but the freezing is annoying me to no end.

Any idea what it could be?

Is your 360 bought recently?
Is it one of the White 360s? You probably got one of the older models so maybe the cpu in the 360 might be overheating quicker than it should, which leads me to believe that a) you might not have it well ventialted, b) it is really the cpu's fault and I would then suggest you trade it in for a good newer 360 model where that problem was fixed.
I've been playing CoD4, Orange Box(more of this one recently), Ace Combat 6, and Assassin's Creed the heck out of on my Elite, so far no problems.

Yeah, I bought it last July.

The 360 is put on an open space near some good ventilation, and I haven't been using it recently so its not like its getting hot very quickly.

The system comes with a full 1 year warranty, and 3 years for the 3 red lights, so send it in.

Erm...does it help that I bought it used? ^_^;

I DID buy an extended warranty because I knew what I was getting into.

I'll just wait and see if the problem goes away by itself.

Also, how do you open a 360? I ask because I have the feeling that something inside of it is causing the freezing.

EDIT: Well, it happened. As soon as I started this the dreaded ring of death appeared.

I sent in my 360 for the RROD in August, and when I got my replacement (refurbished) console, it will refuse to boot up about every 1/3 time I turn it on.  It's just a random thing and requires a turn off and turn on to fix, it doesn't freeze or anything.  I guess I'll just have to pony up for an HDMI console once I strike the lottery and can afford to buy expensive things that I already have.

I love (hate) how people are just buying more 360's when their old ones break... *sigh*

I'm actually probably going to buy a new one soon too. Mine is working, as of now, but I've had to fix it a couple times myself (no warranty, as I opened it before the 3 years was announced), but I may sell it to my brother and use my Gamestop store credit to buy one of the new "Falcon" systems.

I was in the same boat as you Brandogg. I opened mine up to fix it before the 3 year warranty was announced.
I got a bit more time out of it but it finally bit the dust.
Lucky my newest roommate had her own 360 so I've been able to put off buying another one for awhile.
Been pretty tempted to buy the Halo3 version, it's pretty sweet looking, even thou I'm not a Halo fan.

You lucked out, GameStop stopped offering the extended 1 year warranty on Xbox360, If it wasn't for that you actually would have to go directly to MS if your initial 30days were up. The 3 year warranty is only good through MS, so in order to take advantage with it you would have to call them and ship your system to them.

I'm pretty sure the 3 year warranty will work with used systems. You just need to make sure you have the system registered with MS.

OK I am EXTREMELY pissed off right now!

On Monday I went to Gamestop to return the broken 360. Like I already said I bought my 360 along with a ONE YEAR warranty. When I went to use the warranty it turns out that it ends the minute I return the broken 360! I thought the point of a ONE YEAR warranty is that if something breaks, even if it does a hundred times you have the right to return it for the whole year.

Anyways, I bring a new 360 home. My nephew plays Guitar Hero 3 for a couple of hours. Then it dies...The system has barely a day of life and its already dead!

I am pissed as all hell right now. I'll try to bring it in tomorrow and I WILL give them a piece of my mind. I will demand to give me a new one, even if I have to pay the difference (I bought the 360 before the price drop at 250. Since an used 360 now costs 200 bucks I can get a new core at 270, even if I have to pay the other 30).

You know what? I'm so pissed off right now I may give up on 360 gaming for good. I won't tolerate this type of crap...

OK, I vented some anger and talked about it to a friend of mine who happens to be a Gamestop manager, who helped me understand the situation and what to do.

I'll see what I'll be able to do at the store tomorrow. Even if the warranty ended the 30 day should still be in play. If I demand loud enough I can get a brand new 360, even if I have to pay the difference.

If all else fails, there's MS.

Gamestop are bastards with their warranties. It's not a real 1-year warranty. I believe though, if you have to send it to Microsoft (which I would recommend anyway), they might send you a new system, which will have a new 1 year general/3 year 3 red light warranty.

There is no way in hell you should have to or want to pay the difference. Even though consumer laws here differ from yours, assuming you live in a civilized country, you got given a broken product.

Brandogg,

If Microsoft can't fix your 360 they will give you a refurbished 360 thats repaired. Thats the closest thing you will get to a new 360 from Microsoft's repair center.

I don't think that's always the case. Some people received HDMI systems in return for their old one, right when they started selling them.

My friends at Toy and Gameland had to send 3 360s for repair and none of the replacements had an HDMI but they did have a 2nd heatsink.

OK, time to give you guys an update on the situation.

I went to Gamestop and explained to them what was going on. I told them that I wanted a BRAND NEW 360 and that I would pay the difference. Originally, I wanted to get the simple "Arcade' 360. But my parents convinced me it was a better idea to get the Elite bundle. So, minus the 250 I paid for the broken 360 back when I first bought it, the Elite bundle cost me 200 bucks, which is really considering;

- It has a 120 gig HD with lots of demos and arcade games
- It came with two games; Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Forza Motorsport (solid games!(
- It came with a free head set
- A wireless controller

So overall, I am pleased with the decision. The new 360 is working perfectly.

Congrats, but I would have made sure it's a Falcon system before I bought it, as they are actually more dependable. The easiest way to tell is by the power rating - 175w is Falcon, 203w is most likely not. Also, you get all of that with the Pro system as well, but with 100GB less, though you'll probably never need it anyway.

If I ever save up enough to get my dream 52 inch LCD 1080p TV, I will probably buy a new 360 as well since mine is a refurbished piece of junk.

So what's this about power levels and what not?  Isn't the easiest way to tell if yours is a "Falcon" the HDMI port?
