Green... or Red? Both it seems.
« on: March 27, 2003, 07:22:33 AM »
So here is the deal.  I have beaten the original OoT, that came out in '98 on the N64, upwards of 5 times.  When I beat it, I always look foward to the spewing RED blood of Ganondorf.  Then, After I escape the castle, and defeat Ganon,  I am treated to 2 sword slashes and an impalement by link, each with its own spew of RED blood.

Now, here is the strange thing, in Nintendo Power, someone wrote a question and asked whether the blood was GREEN or RED.  The answer from the guy at NP was...   "I seem to recall it was GREEN."

Now,  I thought that was a straight up lie...  until I beat Master Quest on the Bonus Disk.  In Master Quest, the Blood in all 4 instances is GREEN.

So.......   Let us get this straight once and for all.

-It was originally released with RED blood
-Changed later to GREEN, so no more copies of RED blood were being sold.
-Change to GREEN was kept on the Bonus Disk

Is all the stuff I wrote above correct?
      ^^---"There is still hope"---^^

Yes, that is accurate.  If I remember correctly, there have now been FOUR different "versions" of Ocarina of time.

The early carts have the red blood. This includes both gold and gray carts since a lot of people mistakenly think the red blood is limited to the gold carts. At some point Nintendo decided to censor it. The game was rated E so it wasn't like censoring it was inappropriate. I mean as far as I know games that are rated E aren't supposed to have any blood.

I also seem to recall a small room at the end of the shadow temple that has two crossed beams coming out from the floor with chains hanging off of it, with blood pooled on the floor. Does anyone know if that got changed?

I am at the bottom of the well in Master Quest right now.  (And stuck like you wouldn't believe....)  The part that you are referring to is in the center room in the well...  And yes, there is still a pool of RED blood on the floor.  To tell the truth, I hadn't given it much thought until you mentioned it, as I am so used to seeing stuff like that.  (Diablo, Silent Hill, etc.)

They also changed the Fire Temple music after the first version, and that carried over onto the new disk.

Wow. That's pretty weird.  I wouldn't think that they would change part of a game in the middle of production like that.  They definately should have given that game a Teen rating.  Maybe Nintendo got in trouble with the ESRB or something.  I mean, they gave StarFox a Teen rating, and there's absolutely no blood or anything romotely scary in that...  Maybe they'll make another version of the Wind Waker without the depth-of-field blur if people complain... :-)

They changed the Fire Temple music?  Why?
Was it somehow too mature for an E rated game!?

I remember reading somewhere that the chanting in the fire temple was something about Allah being mighty or whatever. I have no idea if this is true or not, but if it is, it would explain why it has been changed.

Personally I'm surprised that the bonus disc was still rated E, given that the game has a much darker feel than Starfox, and there's STILL blood splashed around in places.

i remember in the original gold cart version, you could lose your sword (in the fight against ganon) and then save, and when you restarted the game link would be sans a sword.

i heard somewhere that they removed this from the later carts though.

Nintendo power said something about the chanting in the background being removed because it closely resembled some other chant and they didn't want to get in copyright trouble or something.  They said it was a coincidence.
