Do new Wiis come with the new and forecast channels or do they need to be downloaded?

Well, to use the forecast channel you need an Internet connection anyway, so if it isn't pre-installed, you could download it easily, right?

Well a friend of mine is getting one and wanted to know what she needed to get and as I have had my Wii since the jump off I have had to download everything and hadn't the foggiest idea if she needed to download or would it be there when she fires the system up.

Since both the forecast channel and the news channel are dependent upon the Wii having an internet connection, it makes sense that you'd probably have to download it yourself... but actually... I don't...knooooow.... hmmm

So I'm on the offical Wii site trying to find an answer and they have interviews for the developers of each channel. Did you know the Forecast and News channels have different music depending on the time of the day? That is so sweet. As for the answer, it simply reads must have internet connection to use these features so I assume they are there just not able to be used if you have not got the internets up and running on the Wii.

Oh god I love those interviews. I really have to make the time to read the new interviews that Iwata ran with the developers of Mario Galaxy, because I read all of those talks that he had with the Zelda team, the Wario Ware team, and the channels team like you did!

Um...The Forecast and News Channels were there on launch day, but weren't activated until the proper Wii system updates were issued in December 2006 and January 2007. I'd assume the channels will be there on a new Wii, but might require firmware updates to become active, depending on when the console was manufactured.
