Ratchet & Clank Future
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:55:06 AM »
Downloaded the demo last night and god DAMN is this game pretty.  I mean seriously, I'm tempted to buy it based on the visuals alone.  The voice acting is also superb.  I've never touched a Ratchet game before in my life but I'm seriously considering picking this up.

The only hesitation I have is that the actual playing I found myself preferring the platforming more so than the hitting crap with a wrench.  The actual fighting didn't seem to "flow" as well with me as the running/jumping skidding/"falling with style", and IGN said it's 80% fighting 20% platforming, and I'd prefer for it to be the other way around.

Then again IGN also gave the game a crazy positive review, so...

My friend bought his copy today, got home, went on msn and told me he got it, then said that he was going to logoff and play R&C, a few minutes later he calls me telling me that he has to go back to the store to trade it for a good copy because that disc was melted inside the case LOL, I should have asked him to take a photo and send it to Kotaku (he likes Kotaku).

Ratchet and Clank is a great series, if I had a PS3 I would be picking this one up for sure. The game looks gorgeous and from what I've heard, it plays great. No surprise considering the other games were excellent as well.

Picked it up last night, second to last one at EB.

I'm enjoying it a lot so far, and stayed up WAY too late last night playing it. Like the demo showcased, beautiful graphics, great voice acting, very funny, and most importantly fun to play!

Minor gripes -

The first level is still by the far the coolest level visually.

I HATE that on the "Starfox" sequences I can't switch the aiming stick to "invert y-axis". I always play all games with inverted, and although thankfully the game lets you do this for the camera and aiming on the on-foot portions, I can't fathom why they didn't include this option for of all the things the most "flight" inspired part of the game. Not a deal breaker or anything, but it just irritated as I kept missing crap 'cause I can't aim uninverted. :-P

Anyways, like I said, a great game and definitely recommended to any fellow PS3ers!

Did they fix the retarded [] = wrench, O = gun, X = jump control scheme? I've only played R&C2 but that button assignment is total crap, can't jump and shoot very well. R&C would really have benefitted from Wiimote aiming, the controls and camera tend to get in the way at just the wrong time.

No, that's the control scheme.  I haven't had a problem at all with it though...

Wow, just got done playing close to 6-7 hrs of the game and WOW it is a great game. I wasn't a huge fan of the previous ones but this game is tons of fun. While it has yet to get "hard" I find the difficulty to be decent, even if alot of the platforming elements should be nothing to a SM64 or SMS expert. Regardless it is a wonderful game.

Yeah, the difficulty picks up in some of the later levels.  I was never a gamer who got more fun out of getting his ass handed to him over and over again though, so even on the "easy" levels I was still having a blast.

Plus when you beat it you get a hard mode, in case you find the entire game too easy, you can go back and play like a big kid.

Wow, this game finally got Sony to make a good commercial for their PS3!

Yeah, I've been seeing a LOT of the R&C commercials lately.  I'm glad to see that they're putting a large marketing push behind a game that fully deserves it.

Ratchet & Clank Future A Crack in Time
« Reply #11 on: October 31, 2009, 01:03:31 AM »
Got it on Thursday.
I'm having a blast with this game.
The Clank puzzles are tough some times, like really tough, and I'm not saying that is a negative aspect in the game.
The only thing I can nitpick about is that certain particle effects do look pixelated... yeah I know, hard to believe but true.

After playing the Crack in Time: Clank demo and the demo for Tools of Destruction, I actually went in and picked up Tools of Destruction today.  This will be my first Ratchet and Clank game, so I'm looking forward to the Future trilogy.  As to the visuals, they're great but not exactly the best I've seen on the PS3.  I do really like the sense of humor I've seen in the demos, though.

I have to go back and beat Quest for Booty again, since I lost my save trying to conserve space on the old 40 gig'er. If you have completed saves from Tools and Quest, you get a rebate on shop items in Crack in Time. Hopefully somebody will get me Crack in Time for my birthday!
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

After completing Tools of Destruction (which was ok, but the writing wasn't particularly good and the game took itself too seriously), I picked up A Crack in Time yesterday and I'm liking this installment a lot more.  It's pretty obvious that in those 2 years inbetween games Insomniac grew fond of games like GTA IV; Mario Galaxy; Bioshock; and Kingdom Hearts because there's elements from those games all over the place (for the better, IMO).  Dr. Nefarious is hilarious, and after playing Tools of Destruction there just seems to be a much greater level of polish on ACiT.  It's not the kind of thing you'd notice if you hadn't played ToD in a while, but side-by-side ACiT is just gorgeous.

Good to hear.  While Future looked amazing, I just found it a bit boring.  It just wasn't compelling enough to finish, same with booty.  Looks like there are a couple demos for the new one, I'll give em a shot.

I highly suggest you only download the "Clank" demo for Crack in Time, as it's both fairly lengthy and prominently features the best new addition to the franchise: Clank's time puzzles.  You also get to enjoy them in the correct context, something you do not get from the Ratchet demo (which is incredibly short, not terribly different from anything in Tools of Destruction, and feels empty without the right in-game context).

Well, I completed my main run through the game, acquiring everything from the laundry list of collectables (skill points, trophies, weapon mods, gold bolts, and zoni).  I still need to complete Challenge Mode and get all the Omega Weapons upgraded, but overall I'll leave it at this: if we didn't already have Batman: Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 this year, this would probably be my Game of the Year.  It's clever (especially the Clank puzzles), it's fun, it's technically impressive, it's very well-written, and it's just plain funny.  While it may not be the most original game considering all the games it lifts ideas from, it's presented in an extremely polished and well-executed way.  It has that essential element missing from Tools of Destruction: I actually care about the characters.  Best mascot platformer I've played in years.

I'm really excited to see where the story goes. And don't tell me anything--I want to go in fresh. My instincts tell me that Nefarious has a larger role in the R&C mythos than Up Your Arsenal led us to believe.
