So.. what are Nintendo's options for the Holiday?
« on: October 11, 2007, 08:21:29 AM »
Seeing as the biggest Nintendo multiplayer title has been pushed back a full two months,
what does the N have to entice those who were split between Wii/360 ?

The Xbox360 is a tempting purchase for a lot of people (still not really sure why, but it may have something to do with Halo3), and the Wii doesn't really have any new kickass multiplayer titles this holiday.

Sure, we have BatallionWars2

and some VC titles
*(which, by the way, there had BETTER be a F*n ton of, including Smash 64, Earthbound, and some serious N64 titles - perhaps the THQ wrestling titles [impossible, i know])*

and there's Mario Galaxy. which will rape. it will sell consoles, and i will drool over this game until its in my hands and im shooting across the stars, but this is NOT going to fulfill the role of kickass holiday party game quite like Smash would have.

and before anyone mentions "who is going to take out smash and show it off at their parents' Christmas party?" I will supply an answer: no one. But how many of you would want to spend that time smashing around all those people? seriously, you'd want to Brawl behind closed doors, with lights off and the sound blasting some wonderfully orchestrated tracks. and if the Wii were brought out to the party, you know you'd load up some WiiSports or Raving Rabbids or VC titles that will catch people's attention. You're not gonna smash your dad's friends.

So there is another problem: No 'casual' market cashcow. Japan is getting WiiFit this December, and that will sell out through the new year, but America? (nothing?)

I must be missing out on something. I really don't fear the Wii's success, but I do wonder how the sales figures will look because -- lets face it -- Halo3 is going to continue selling Xbox360's well past that point when people stop being mezmerized by WiiSports (which was like February for most).

Hell, I KNOW these are selling to different audiences, but that yuppie casual market is awfully keen on EVERY tech-fad, so Wii could lose some serious sales to iPhones, Swatches, etc.
AND I realize that those sales cut into Xbox360's pie, as well
It's just that I don't imagine Msoft being the one getting hurt here. They're sitting on the real gimmick, the shooter that everybody wants simply because everyone else tells them to want it. And that hype train is still freakin chugging -- anyone watching Sara Silverman show last night (god rest you) was treated to a scene of that male-male couple blasting trollocs and gunships et al. in Halo3. It's still everywhere *(of course, that episode was likely recorded during the "believe" hype or sooner)*

Its just weird, ya know? I should have expected this, in fact at one point i DID expect this:
I was certain that WiFi play would not make the cut for Brawl, simply for the sake of launching the game on time.
And it looks like I was just slightly mistaken.
And deeply hurt.
Damn you Sakurai (sorry sir, i don't mean that)! I was nearly done playing Melee! I've played this damn game for  5 years now and have been competitively participating in tournaments etc. for 2 of those years, and i am just ready to let this beast rest in peace and bring on the Brawl,.

.
in summary,
BEYOND MARIO (which really, numbers will show that THERE IS NO "beyond" MARIO)
What are Nintendo's big holiday hitters? As in, what is out there that is going to get gamers to want to play Wii with their friends? cos all i see are some awesome one player titles so far. but I can remember the last time i played Metroid Corruption in front of an audience. It sucked. people lost interest because it was not a multiplayer title.

What Nintendo could do to make me love them forever:
a month of the best VC titles possible, from different companies, for all different consoles
get stuff up there that we really really want to play. MegaMan collections, StarFox 1&2, Earthbound and Smash64, Neo-Geo Fighters, an N64 wrestling game (plsplzplease!)

..
im parched. I'll be around for discussion, so don't think this is just going to die. And if I'm missing some seriously big titles, lemme know: it could cure this depression.

ps.- bring ooon Advance Wars DS 2! that art is amazing
ps.- guess I have to go buy Mario Strikers . . . like, now
ps.- BatallionWars2 comes out in just...18 days!
I'll shut up now...

Galaxy is Nintendo's cash earner this holiday season, and perhaps WiiFit if it releases in America around the same time it is releasing in Japan.

Wiis will sell regardless of Smash. This is important to realize.

The casual market is still eating up all the Wii hype and you can bet your ass that tons of kids out there will have a Wii under their tree this year because they have been begging for it all year. Just think, now that Smash is delayed, next year when there is nothing to play Smash is going to fall into your lap at the perfect time.

Well each person will have their own tastes in games.  My Nintendo options for the Holiday are:

Raving Rabbids 2
Battalion Wars 2
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Super Mario Galaxy

Truthfully, I think moving Brawl back was a good move for Nintendo, because it leaves an opening for 3rd parties again to have a strong Christmas and this year there are tons of good 3rd party support.

But, lets not forget that Nintendo is also giving us:

Virtual Console Games
WiiWare Games (Possibly this year)
Sonic and Mario @ the Olympics Sure it is Sega but still has Nintendo characters in the game.
Endless Ocean

Then there is a huge supply of 3rd party games that I could not even begin to list.

Wii is going to have a great holiday, Smash Brothers is only one game, and even without it the Wii will more than likely sell out,  so it isn't really necessary as a system seller.

Here are a list of games that have potential in propelling NIntendo to a tremendous holiday:

1. SMG
2. Battalion Wars II
3. Endless Ocean (Maybe it will come out this winter)
4. Zack and Wiki
5. Resident Evil UC
6. Medal of Honor
7. Godzilla

This is just a few of the games, and a pretty big variety at that. Really I don't think Nintendo has a whole heck of alot to worry about from MS who is mainly targeting a small chunk of the gamers, while Nintendo will have a variety of games for everyone.

All Nintendo has to do is do a little advertising, a little repeat of viral 2006, and get their console on shelves. Any consoles they don't sell during Christmas (am I starting to doubt a sell-out? With Nintendo promising 2X the number of stock as last year, maybe) will sell out come early 2008 for Smash and WiiFit combined.

Don't forget that Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is coming, sandwiched in there between BWii and Galaxy. I'm not buying it, but only because I won't let myself get it until I beat at least one of the 2 GBA ones that I have.

Other Wii exclusives that haven't already been mentioned are NiGHTS and Geometry Wars: Galaxies. The thing about NiGHTS is that it's from Sega, and though it pains me to say it, that's a bit of a red flag these days. And Geometry Wars isn't for everyone, but the original was a very popular Live Arcade game and they seem to be thinking up every crazy modification of that formula possible, so I'm keeping my eye on it.

It's still really hard to go into a store any time and buy a Wii.  Reggie has stated that he doesn't expect demand to be met for Christmas.  So for all those who don't have a Wii yet odds are they've wanted one for a while and existing games are what they want it for.  I don't think everyone who wants a Wii for WiiSports has a Wii yet.  Compare this to the Gamecube where the console was regularly available and anyone who wanted it for an earlier game probably already had one come Christmas time.  Nintendo isn't at the point where they have to work really hard to get people to want Wii's because they still haven't sold one to everyone who wanted one a whole YEAR AGO.  It's when Wii's are sitting in Toys 'R' Us gathering dust that Nintendo needs to make sure they have a big Christmas game to get the late adopters.

And Super Mario Galaxy is a pretty big deal.  It's not like Nintendo has NOTHING being released here.

Nintendo's going to send out the top-secret firmware update that enables the Wii's ultra-secret high-performance hardware, which also provides full XBox 360 emulation. Then they'll pack each Wii with a free pirated copy of Halo 3.

Seriously, though, I think they're fine. One thing I'd like to see is advertising. Promote the heck out of all the new releases (and even releases like MP3) with all sorts of ads and exposure. Pound the truth into consumers' minds (both existing and prospective) that there is much, much more to the Wii than Wii Sports and minigames.

First, people were screaming about how their wallets can't take both SMG and Brawl so closely together. Now Brawl gets delayed and the entire Holiday is gameless?

They should seriously reconsider not having Wii Fit this year.

That's like the perfect follow-up for Wii Sports to ensure media fawning this year.

Nintendo probably doesn't think they can make enough units for a Japan and US launch at the same time.  Or they can't localize it fast enough.

With Brawl, I had too much to play this holiday season. Without Brawl, I still have too much to play this holiday season. As much as I still want Brawl, the 2 month delay was a blessing in disguise. There was no way I could possibly enjoy Contra 4, Super Mario Galaxy, and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles in the same month. And that's just what I like. There's plenty more for everyone else.

So yeah, like Mashiro said, Nintendo just has to show up. Not everyone will get one because, like Ian Sane said, not everyone who wanted one last year has one yet, but as long as Nintendo has consoles to sell, they'll sell. So even if the other consoles do very well, Nintendo should be more than fine.

Well, I called Smash being delayed since we heard news that Super Paper Mario would be in April, which meant that Galaxy would have to be in the fall. I mean, there's no way they would launch it 3 weeks apart from Galaxy. Too much system-selling potential would be wasted. Plus, it's just fine with me, because I want it to get all the time it needs.

And I'm still catching up on GameCube, Wii AND DS games. With Phoenix Wright, Prof Layton, Phantom Hourglass, then all the great Wii games I plan to play soon, I'm 100% satisfied.
