CassMass: Friend or Foe?
« on: October 03, 2007, 11:14:55 AM »
Only story I remember of Matt Cassamassina was told by a close friend who went to E3 prior to the announcement of GameCube, back when it was called "Dolphin." CassMass, drunk at a bar, pulled out of his pocket a small chip that he announced was the Gecko, the main chip used in Nintendo's new system. It wasn't breathtaking to look at, so the story goes, but everyone marveled just at the fact that he had it. How? Well, I always assumed that he stone cold killed a man to get it, but that's probably only half true.

Well I can say one thing, I have far more faith in his reviews of Wii games then any other reviewer out there, even  when he is harsh. It is nice to see someone take a hard line against inflating review scores (Looks at 1up.com)

I heard he drinks the blood of small children to remain young, and has in fact lived for over a millennia.

Overall a friend.

But another story goes that he and/or his clothes smelled of the locoweed during E3 media briefings in those days as well.
"wow."

I think this is a non-segregationist thread darkheart, if you have a witty quip to say, let it fly. If you have an indictment against Matty, also let it fly. If you have praise M. Cass, prepare to be flamed.
It's an edutainment hybrid thread!

But seriously, sites like Destructoid play up the rock star angle of game journalism quite a bit.

Thats because really thats all there is to it.  Its a stressful job no doubt, with the inclusion of playing so many games writing all the articles, keeping in touch on the forums and blogs, you have to keep up with the pr.  You have to go to big events and have fun with people in the industry.  Its a party hard work hard scenario.  If you read any of the Ign writer's blogs you will find plenty of pics and entries about various swag events they went to and got wasted at.  It also provides them with vital contacts in the industry.  Jessica Chobot interviewed the creator of Tron roughly a year ago and they hit it off so well that now shes co-writing a script for Tron's spiritual succesor.  You can not say she would ever have gotten that without Ign.

Back to Matt he gets all that insider info because

1.  He is extremely well trusted and expressed how much kiss ass he has to do to play nice nice with various pr to make sure he gets exclusive info.
2.  Has various friends in the industry who can give him insider info
3.  Has many contacts via Ign

I am not a HUGE fan of Matt and Bozon but I have to give it to them, they always in my eyes seemed like true Nintendo fans, and of what they dedicate themselves to their website is well beyond what most would do.

Go ahead and flame me then

CassMass smokes the sweet sweet ganj?

Friend!

Seriously though, I've never had a reason to dislike him. I've never had a reason to like him either..........until now of course. If what DarkHeart says is true, then it's another fine example of a toker doing his job well.

I don't blame Matt. But some of us have memories that are better than a goldfish and we can't help but look at reputations when it comes to things such as rumours.

If I remember correctly, Halo DS was something that Matt said clearly that he was sure was in development, so people not believe him in turn is attacking his integrity no matter how you want to spin it. When you don't believe someone who says something with certainty, that is saying they are being dishonest.

I'm attacking his integrity by "taking his rumours with a grain of salt"? Care to draw an even longer bow?

Did any of us tell you how Tommy Tallarico was staying at the same hotel as us last E3, parking his yellow ferrari in the parking lot of the comfort inn; his license plate was "VIDGAMES." Thought that was maybe related.

I saw Shane Bettenhausen at SEATAC airport. I resisted the temptation to yell out "MANGOD!" and run away.

Seeing Suda play (try) the didgeridoo at a party earlier this year is way more awesome than stories of some drug-peddling journalist.
