Sega expects Mario & Sonic to sell...

4 million copies?

Linkage

Quality often doesn't run in parallel with sales (Secret Rings?) does it. Licensed titles suck the remaining life out of them.

Assuming they mean both the Wii and DS versions, then yeah, it will.

Seriously, it's Mario *and* Sonic.  Together.  It could have been Mario and Sonic's Staring Contest and it'd sell out the wazoo.

I can easily see this game pushing 4 million.  I haven't read any previews but they are obviously going for a Wii sports type of thing with the game and if they succeed you already have a huge number right there.  The Mario and Sonic brand is on it so we throw some guaranteed money and not only will the game sell at launch but if they advertise during the Olympics it would sell way more.  Since I am in Beijing I am not a good judge of how crazy the rest of the world is for the Olympics though since I see signs for it constantly.

They should make an Olympic game with just the 5 super cute Olympic mascots.

I'm not as optimistic as my peers.  I think this game COULD do well, but I don't trust Sega to not make it suck eggs.  If it does suck it wont sell 4mil.

In that same type of scenario, what happened with Geist?

Geist? What?

Geist wasn't made by Sega. It was made by N-Space AND it didn't involve any of Nintendo's IP's.

No... but it was still a potential Nintendo IP which got pushed back over and over. Nintendo didn't save the game, though without them who knows how it may have turned out?

I'm cautiously optimistic here. It's Sega, a company I love, but I realize they aren't what they once were, though they are being managed by Nintendo. Nintendo has been able to bring order to chaos before, hopefully having their marquee mascot in the mix will provide them the motivation to step in and keep Sega from screwing it up. I'm considering a purchase, and if they don't screw it up, and especially if the Miyamoto-hinted Fencing makes its way in there I will be one of those 4 million.

And as it has been said, WiiSports like gameplay with the meeting of two bitter 16-bit rivals that even the nonniest nongamers know about and releasing it worldwide on the 2 most popular game platforms out there right now; 4 million is a rather conservative estimate when you look at it that way.

"Well the thing is Crimm, Sega is being held to a Nintendo standard just like F-Zero GX."

F-Zero GX was released in 2003.  Sammy bought Sega in 2004.  In other words the REAL Sega made F-Zero GX.  That changes things significantly.  F-Zero GX is one of the last games "Good Sega" made.

It's not like Nintendo's ever regarded the Mario sport spin-offs as just "easy money."  Oh wait, they always have.  I really doubt Nintendo is going to hold up development that much.  Sega's never even proven that they can create a 3D camera engine!

Oh, and the F-Zero GX team isn't the same team has is making this.

The last great game Sega published came out of the Creative Assembly.  The great game before that?  Also out of The Creative Assembly.

Any game which allows you to possess a nearly nude woman, possess grenades and roll them over to enemies and detonate them AND possess a plate rack and break plates across a chef's face is GOTY material, period.

Having finally picked up a deep discount copy of Giest I can conclude one thing: it needed more (yes MORE) time and should have been pushed to the Wii.  Would have been more options.

Hell yes. I've always believed that Geist would've done so much better on the Wii, if only because Nintendo would've had another game to hype at launch. Not to mention many of the things SCREAM Wiimote functions (like better aiming for once...).

Yes. It sucked free range eggs but too many people still rushed out and got it. The best game of a string of bad games makes it a bad game still..

Confirmed.

Also I have no doubt this game could push four million across both systems. Just cross off Sonic from the box art, rename it to Wii Olympic Sports and have Nintendo publish it instead of Sega. (NO SERIOUSLY IT'S GOING TO BE BLOODY HUGE AND I CAN'T WAIT).

And this is coming from someone that loves Alien Syndrome...

I know I am derailing the thread in a big way but I've been playing Bioshock in the last few days and remembered Geist.

The reason I bring it up is because the creators of Bioshock have been tooting their own horn about what a creative, innovative and fantastic game they have created, yet the creators of N-space have been quiet and humble yet they truly created something special.

I mean, Bioshock is good and all but its pretty straightforward in execution despite how they hyped how you can control the environments and make choices. In Geist there were some pretty clever and extremely satisfying puzzles, stuff I hadn't seen before in a FPS. The scenarios SB mentioned are so enjoyable because its something you never expect yet do it anyway. I was smiling like an idiot when I possessed a TV and scared the crap out of small rats and them possessed one of them so I could enter a part of the level.

Its stuff like that which leads me to believe that Geist was a flawed but wonderful and humble labor of love. I see Bioshock (and many other FPS games) and think its very pretentious and arrogant.

Sorry for derailing the thread but Geist has so many wonderful moments that its a shame Nintendo did a piss poor job with it...

For those g's dissing Secret Rings:
I know it be cool to be a hater, yo.  But stop knocking on my Dog.  It may not be a cool foty on a hot day... I can't do it

I don't know where all the hate for Secret Rings come from.  I personally really enjoyed it and its in my top 4 of Sonic games (2,3,Adventure, & SR)I hated Rush for the most part.  Not to mention among the Wii games I've most enjoyed.
