I have one old and one new issue. The old issue is something I've suspected for a while, but never confirmed until recently, which is that my Wii can't send or receive messages, except from Nintendo. I've tried it with multiple people over the last few weeks, and nothing's come of it.

The new one is a graphical issue. Well, at least I think it's new. I didn't notice it until I plugged my Wii into my mom's HDTV with component cables (I imagine just due to the increased size, and probably the progressive scan). There are these little sort of gray-ish lines/areas scattered about the screen. They're not very pronounced, and hard to notice unless you're looking for them, but as you can imagine, it's still quite irritating knowing that they're there. Has anyone heard of anything like that happening to a Wii before?

thats odd. i dont want to come off as insulting your intelligence but when you try to message someone, their name is blacked out on your friend roster right?

Is your TV doing any sort of upscaling?

Yes, their name is black. People I could previously correspond with via the Wii messaging system, I am no longer able to do so with.

Do you see this in games? or in the Wii menu?

Would you identify them as color-banding or dithering? Wii is forced to color-band and dither cuz it's running at 16-bit color since it's such inferior hardware whose bubble will burst.

I've only actually noticed it in the Wii menu, it is possible that it happens in the games, but I haven't yet taken a close look at it. And I wouldn't call it either color-banding or dithering. Like I said, it's sort of scattered about the screen, as though parts of the image aren't receiving a complete signal (which may or may not be possible, that's just what it looks like).

You might have your wii going bad. Do you use connect24? Supposedly the wii would overheat if left in wiiconnect24 mode before recent wii updates corrected the problem. Try a graphic intensive game. Something like Strikers, Corruption, RE 4, or something along those lines. See if the scattering increases. If so, you'll need to send your wii into Nintendo to fix. I had my wii replaced last month for a similiar issue. First game I noticed was with RE 4. Green pixels/lines everywhere. Eventually it got bad enough that I noticed effects in the Wii menu/Wii Sports. Note, for Strikers it was black pixels and for the wii menu it was white pixels. It seemed to change based on the game but either way not picture was shown on those pixels.

I've noticed grayish lines on the menu that I didn't see when using the original cables that I see while using the component cables, but I am not bothered by them because I just figured it was on purpose and it doesn't affect anything else, never seen them in games.

Are we positive this isn't just him noticing more detail in the background when it's hooked up Prog Scan? I don't have my Wii up and running right now, but doesn't the background have fine horizontal lines through it?

Oh, I forgot to mention that after I swapped it back to my normal SDTV, the graphical problem is still there, just less noticeable (I figure due to being a smaller screen, or perhaps due to not running in progressive scan mode). And the lines I spoke of were vertical, and like I said, there were also random patches of it. I'm thinking it might be a product of me having WiiConnect24 on all the time.

Here's my own HDTV issue, how come the only game that runs in full 16:9 on my TV is Wii Sports?

Full 16:9 is a myth for modern TVs. They show too much overscan and want to be filled by something more like 16.5:9.

And Twilight Princess, and Mario Strikers Charged, if not more that I either can't remember or haven't played in a long time and so I also don't know.

Well, yeah, but I already have TP for GameCube and have no interest in Strikers. I'm just saying, why don't they all fill the screen? I at least expected it of Prime 3. Just wasn't sure what the deal was. Just devs not doing it?

Some games probably do it to keep performance up. Keep in mind the reason they probably feel they can get away with it in most cases is because the average SDTV doesn't show the few lines they cut out. Metroid Prime did this as well as Smash Bros Melee, and they were both 4:3 ratio games. I can also tell you that if you were to set said games back to 4:3, the cut out lines will still be there.

As far as the vertical lines showing up on the Wii menu, I get them too but from what I've seen not every HD set shows this, which leads me to believe it's moreso the TV not having that vast a color gamut as opposed to it being the Wii itself. On my set, grays and most colors related to them through component dither like hell no matter what.
However, any horizontal scanline-like dithering when stuff like particles and smoke kick up in some games is the Wii doing it. Zelda TP and WW does it (way worse in WW, I believe it was one of the first games to try doing gradients that way), so does Excite Truck. EA games and some other third party titles don't seem to do that though it has cropped up in Far Cry. Interestingly enough, it will only show up like that in progressive scan.

With the first issue, I know it may sound corny and obvious, but see if you can get a hold of tech support. I've had a few minor problems with my Wii and they were a huge help.

Yeah, I'm calling Nintendo later today for both issues. Honestly having this many problems with my Wii is kind of disappointing. Whatever happened to the unbreakable Nintendo products we used to know? x_x

If I leave my tv on widescreen for the port plugs my Wii uses it stays in widescreen even after I switch to another port.

My Gamecube broke when it got 4 years old. I don't believe in that Nintendo anymore.

My GCN still works and it was a launch system. Heck, my Super Nintendo and N64 both work still. They were launch as well. I still believe.

Oh and my Wii still works great. I don't remember seeing these lines, though my Wii has always been in progressive mode with component, so maybe they're there and I just don't notice them.

I have a dormmate whose Wii went completely dead on him, wouldn't even turn on. He sent it in for repairs.... then when he got it back recently, his new one can no longer play GCN discs. He'll be sending that in too now.
