Wario Ware hate?
« on: September 02, 2007, 06:55:37 AM »
NOTE:I didn't know where to put this thread so I figured I would put it on the Nintendo board. Mods if this thread is out of place feel free to move it elsewhere.

On another forum that I visit the unveiling of the Wario Ware stage in Brawl has opened a Pandora's box of hate and annoyance towards the series, some of them calling it stupid and boring.

This is certainly not the first time I've seen fans express some sort of dislike towards the series and as much as I love the series I understand to an extend why the hate.

First of all, Nintendo seems to favor it over the Wario Land series, Wario's first independent series away from the Mario universe. That series was already developed and featured a very unique look to Bizarro Wario. The series had a very dynamic gameplay mechanic in which Wario was transformed into a lot of stuff just to accomplish the goal of the stage. The games also featured some very quirky humor that is very Wario. Its no wonder those series had its very loyal following, myself being part of it.

Then came Wario Ware, a messed up series that took the gaming world by storm. Wario Land's "charming" appeal was updated to acid trip status, featuring gameplay that is best  defined as spastic. But best of all it gave Wario an even more original universe, giving him a brand new setting and characters to work it. It made him even more independent from the Mario universe. The original GBA game proved to be a hit and thus Nintendo made some more. Its such a big hit that the original WL series took a backseat (even if Master of Disguise was made it flopped and was a critical failure), which would lead towards some hate from the fans.

And now that Wario is finally in Brawl he is featured in his Wario Ware uniform and has a stage based on the series (with an original character showing up as a playable character more than likely) it seems to have fanned the flames even more. What about Wario's dash? Wario's castle? Cpt. Syrup? His transforming caps? What about his form changing powers? It looks as if Wario's other life has been forgotten at Nintendo...

In my opinion as much as I love both Wario series I favor the WW series a tad more if only because of the universe they created just for him. Plus the games make for a very lively evening. But it is unfortunate that Wario Land seems to have been forgotten at Nintendo.

So, what are your thoughts? Do you have a hate towards the WW series or are you neutral?

WTF is worth it just for the eye tool that let's you hold the PSP up to your head and display different eyes than yours... like cats eyes, women's eyes, guy's eyes.... your can even use the analog nub to have eyes look around. Totally awesome.

You know, the first Wario Ware was awesome.  And while I've purchased every one since then (even the GCN 'port'), I don't feel any of them are as awesome as the first.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Well, hopefully someday they'll do a new Wario Land type game right. The series was a mainstay on their handhelds and even was present for the Virtual boy (though I never got to play it).

I had a great time introducing some of my friends to WW:SM. It's really a great series, even by yourself. It's just one of those things that gives you ADD without you realizing that you paid for it to do so.

Pretty much. I thought Twisted and Touched! were really good, but just couldn't compare to the 100%AWESOMEONACART that was the original.

Smooth Moves' lack of multiplayer pretty much killed all of my interest in the game after the first hour. I've had multiplayer nights with the Cube version which were awesome and I eagerly picked up the Wii version thinking it would be more of the same.
You can't release the same formula of game and expect it to be better when you lobotomize the best feature of it (party mode) and add in some Wiimote functionality - which itself isn't great at times and just leaves you to flail around a bit and hope for the best.

Same thing with Mario Party 8 - except it has multiplayer. The series started out as a party game, unlike WW, and they've managed to mutate this part of the game into something ugly. The fun parts are separated by long breaks which is a real killjoy, making it easy to play Strikers instead.
Considering  there had been six games released since my previous Mario Party experience, and it reminded me of the original game, this is pretty annoying.

There have been some great party games for the Wii, but considering these are first party titles its been a pretty disappointing effort from Nintendo. I'd like to think that they'd improve the series but these recent versions indicate that ports are the easier thing to do.

I like WW: SM but I wouldn't pay full price for it. I got mine on Ebay for like 25 bucks and that was fine.

Nintendo hasn't forgotten about the non-Ware Wario as evident with his recent platform/puzzle ds title and his appearance in classic garb in most every Mario multiplayer title.
"Classic Wario" could still be an unlockable player. There may even be a matching stage.

I remember playing smooth moves multiplayer with my friends a bunch of times. Not having it unlocked right away is very different then not having it at all.

"there was like 0 simultaneous games. pass the wiimote is not MP, its SP switch off."

It's still multiplayer, just taking turns. Like in Mario Bros, Mario Bros 3, and Mario World.
Sure there should have been an option for multiple remotes but then you'd be limited to just four players or however many remotes you happen to have.

Also, there IS a simultaneous multiplayer game, but you have to unlock it.

Well for years fans have wanted Wario in SSB.  Now obviously that was for the Warioland Wario since it was the only Wario that existed at the time that both SSB games were released.  So for Nintendo to put WarioWare Wario in Brawl is kind of annoying because they're not really giving the fans what they want.  Wario SHOULD have been is SSBM.  I really don't see why they didn't include him.  And with WarioWare Wario going in and Nintendo not recognizing the difference odds are the Wario fans want will never be in SSB.  That kinda sucks.  It's like how everyone wants a 3D Pokemon RPG and they finally made one but it sucked.  In Nintendo's mind they did what the fans wanted but the fans aren't satisfied because the execution was all wrong.

Personally I don't like WarioWare, not just because I got bored of the first game when playing the in-store demo, but because the series itself seems to represent Nintendo's shift in focus to non-gamers.  They released this collection of really simple microgames and it became a surprise hit.  Then the next time Nintendo made a speech it was the debut of their whole non-gamer plan and they used the success of WarioWare as an example.  Both the DS and Wii launched with what I would consider pretty weak lineups (Zelda doesn't count because no one needs a Wii to play it) and some lame-o WarioWare game was one of the first titles.  It's bad enough for Nintendo to make a game I don't like.  It happens to everyone.  But it's worst when it becomes one of their main focuses and they start milking the crap out of it.  Now it's hard for me to just dislike it since it has influenced so much of what Nintendo has become.  I can't just ignore it.  Nintendo EXPECTS me to buy WarioWare games like they expect me to buy Mario and Zelda.  When designing both the DS and the Wii controller you can tell "how would they work for WarioWare" was something they were taking into account.  To me WarioWare is like if DK Jr. Math was the big selling NES title and Nintendo designed the SNES with the intent to create better educational games.

Calm down Ian, it's still Wario. No need for explosions of text. Change his hat-with-goggles to his yellow hat and there you go, Wario Land Wario. Maybe they'll have the option of changing his hat just for you. Also

I don't know. None of his currently-revealed moves seem to have any resemblance to anything he did in the old Wario Land games.

I would be disappointed if they included the old Wario.  Warioware Wario has so many unique things he could do that border on realistic to absolutely ridiculous while regular was much more boring and started out as a Mario knockoff.  Now that Wario has finally separated himself from the plumber there is no need to move him back especially when the differences would mean a lot in different fighting game characters.

Really?  Because not having the minigames unlocked from the start ruined my Mario Party experience. I was looking to play some minigames between friends when I realised that I had to play the board game to unlock these. Sure, its fun for those people who like board games, but I stopped playing board games after the epic week-long Monopoly games that turned my childhood from fun to war. I just want to play the damn game.

Its the same thing here. You're telling me that I have to play the game to earn the right to play a part of the game that was available pro bono in previous games? That sounds like the point you are trying to convey so please clarify this. I'm dying to see how that grass is on the other side.

Wario Ware Wario is a character. You don't play as him. You play minigames under his moniker.

There is no character development.
He doesn't conquer evil.
He doesn't get the girl.

He's just a character. You might have a great time playing his games but he's nothing more than a imitator with a big caboose.

PS: Get a dictionary. Ten bucks says you don't know what a moniker is.
