question about nintendo's processor.
« on: August 26, 2007, 07:10:06 AM »
now i know the wii does not have the graphical power of the 360/ps3 -- and nor do i care. i enjoy my wii, love wii play -- and those aren't graphical games. however, i have said in other forums and want to say it here (just to see if anyone here has something to add to it). I believe the wii to have a IBM PowerPC G4 processor. It is believed that the Wii has a 700-900 mhz processor, which is what the G4 was clocked at. And one person added that the G4 was a hot processor -- and that Nintendo would go with a G3 for cooling reasons. However, the Wii gets hot and hot quick....

It would still could be based off the GCN hardware, too, because the G4 was the successor to the G3. I have no facts or links, but I just believe thats what Nintendo used. Doesn't really effect anything, but i would like to see if you guys have any thoughts for/against this theory.

Hmm... that's an interesting theory, but the widespread assumption is that Broadway is heavily based on Gekko and little else, which would make it closer to the G3 than the G4. With the Wii rarely described as little more than an enhanced GameCube and with the Wii doing hardware backwards compatibility so effortlessly, I doubt that there are enough unique aspects in the Broadway over the Gecko to suggest that it belongs to a different processor family than its predecessor.

The GC processor is a PPC 750xxx which is in the same family as the G3 chip.
The Wii processor is based off the same design only beefed up over what the GC chip was capable of.
I was gonna redirect you over to  the Beyond3D forums cause they have many thread on this topic, but I didn't want to look for the specific thread for you. But feel free to check there and get a very detailed explanation of what the Wii and GC processor is really made of.

It's essentially the same CPU and GPU, just faster.
