Was Ness a starter character in the last game? From the looks of the character page on smashbros.com we have one more Newcomer to go befor all the starters revealed.

As far as I can remember, none of the veterans shown so far were secret characters at all in either of the past 2 games. And everyone else besides Shiek was, and with that all but one newcomer seem to be revealed. If only judging by that one little space left open for the characters, if that means anything at all.

Ness was a starter in Melee and a secret character in the original.

I have updated the page again. And if you had not noticed I italiced any highly likely characters that have not been revealed, to give us an idea of how many should be announced now, as well as keeping a count of only the announced characters.

The list is pretty strong, but obviously we have some game franchises still left out.

We have a maximum of 9 possible characters being profiled before the game is released in the U.S. if they do 1 character a week (with there being a second character this week to make up for none less week), but the main problem is that we don't know whether the game will be released in Japan first...(The site STILL doesn't have the Japanese date up for some strange reason...)

Right now we have 20 characters (I'm not counting ZSS as a separate character, as she won't have her own select icon), so I'll say we bump that down to a maximum of 8 to make a nice even number...Of those, the vets I'm sure will return are

Captain Falcon
Jigglypuff
Ganondorf
Mr Game & Watch

I'm still holding out for Marth, Ness, and Luigi to be unlockables, and I'm going to assume that clones are gone, and that Mewtwo is gone (again, there's no evidence that he is, I just think that Lucario could replace him as the powerful Pokemon...)

This leaves a maximum of 4 possible newcomers...(I'm actually quite confident that we'll get 3 more before the game is released) Of those, I'll say we get these:

Animal Crossing MC
Olimar

The last guy could be anyone, but I do feel as if the AC MC and Olimar will be present from the beginning to represent their franchises...

(Edit: Ah crap, I forgot that Snake is going to be an unlockable, so that could make for 5 vets and then the 3 newcomers...Augh, this speculation is so useless...)

It would be exceedingly awesome if we got the game in the US first this time, since there'd be little chance of character spoilers that way.

Why Mewtwo, and why with Lucario? Mewtwo is the most popular legendary in the series. Leaf Green and Fire Red being released recently makes him still very relevant to the franchise, and while Lucario had a movie recently... Mewtwo also had the first film in the series and an OVA all about him.

I'm still not clear why people assume that previously playable characters (unless they were a clone) will likely get replaced by newer ones in the franchise too... I mean, we known Shiek is back and the Pokémon Trainer is circa Red/Blue/Green instead of one of the newer titles. There is a huge difference between updating the visage of a character (ala Fox) to represent the recent games, compared to removing them altogether and just replacing them with someone more current from the franchise.

To add to the objection, lucario sucks in the games where as mewtwo is pretty damned powerful and deserving of his own godlike playable-ness!

Pokemon just feel more expendable to me, sorry...As I said, I have no evidence of Mewtwo being dropped... =)

(My Lucario took on Palkia while it was still 10 levels below it and was able to get him down to a single pixel of red in just 2 hits...

)

Well the game can easily have BOTH Mewtwo and Lucario. Since the game is using the Melee engine all they have to do is upgrade Mewtwo's character model and tweak his moves some. This would hardly take up any time and still allow them to make Lucario from scratch.

We have to remember that for Melee they created a new engine for the game and so had to make all the old characters brand new which took more time. With Brawl on the other hand their using Melee's engine and so the older characters just have to be upgraded which saves the team time to focus more on creating new characters.

And with Brawl having a much longer development time then Melee was allowed, I'd imagine they'll easily be able to keep all the unique characters from Melee as well as create plenty of new ones for Brawl.

If Nintendo puts both Lucario AND Mewtwo into the game it would ruin the experience and I wouldn't buy it!

I'd take sandshrew as a playable over lucario any day of the week . . . so I could do my imitation of the sandshrew trainer from the first season of pkmn!

Ok, I have done the latest revision of the Character list. Of course there is no new characters announced, so I have just been doing clean up and modifying the list. Since Zero Suit Samus is definitely connected to Samus I have joined those characters together perminantly for my list. I have also moved Gannondorf to the italized list. As he is most likely in the game but not 100% confirmed.

Right now we have a list of 21 confirmed, and 26 likely characters. I am beginning to believe the number of characters will be 30 to potentially 40 characters. It just really depends on if there are secret characters, and if all the regular characters already been revealed or if more will be revealed before the game is released.

I can't really remember what Ness's attacks looked like from the last game, can someone look at the new DS stage screen shots and tell me if Lucas appears to be a clone of him? Not that we could truely tell by the still movements, but so far this is the most we've seen out him.
