Well we now know that this game can contain music from ANY Nintendo game ever made.  I mean seriously, X is as obscure as a game can possible get.  X is so obscure and unknown it makes the Ice Climbers look like Pokemon in comparison.  For Sakurai to pick a song from that game means I can easily imagine music from series like Mole Mania and Star Tropics also finding there way in.

Damn, this games soundtrack truly is going to be huge.

But going back to the update, earlier I suggested that perhaps one of the reasons we haven't gotten any character updates in ages is because Sakurai wants to finish talking about the already unveiled characters before moving onto the new ones.

Only 4 characters haven't received their FS update (Solid Snake, Sonic, ZSS and Zelda) while 9 characters have not received their special moves updates (Bowser, Peach, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Pikachu, Ice Climbers, Samus, Zelda and Yoshi).

If Sakurai were to focus on the already revealed characters perhaps we won't get any character reveals till January! O.O

The saddest thing is, I think you're absolutely right. I think Sakurai's still letting the Sonic revelation simmer, and wants to get all the middle-tier suggestion out of the way before confirming anybody else. I'm hoping for one more character in 2007 (even a veteran), but I have a feeling he'll wait until closer to the launch date. That is, assuming it doesn't slip to second quarter like it is in Europe...

I'm also guessing this semi-confirms 4 Wii consoles playing at once?  I must say though, I don't see much of a difference between this online mode and a regular offline brawl with all of this anonymity between players, especially with CPUs taking over disconnections.

I wonder if the game alerts you to opponent disconnect, and also if it will log a player disconnect onto his record next time s/he connect online.

There isn't any, if you have people to play with. And without those people, there's not much, except for the general reason for playing against human opponents instead of the computer: playing against a real person and those particular tactics. If one doesn't care about win/loss records and all that stuff, then that's most of the reason for online play in any game, anyway.

I thought it was interesting that Zelda was an opponent, yet wasn't on the character select screen.

This is terrible news. I HATE playing with items. I like the fact that Sakurai tried to simplify online play, but I think he may have simplified the equation too much.

Mario Strikers does it. Only it tells you the other player has disconnected, and it gives you the option to continue the match (knowing this) or go back and start a fresh match.

Sarcasm noted... Clearly many of games, particularly on the PC, have done this before.  It's not that special.

What hasn't been done much is removing dedicated "hosts" from games.  Normally if the host, the one that starts and sets up the game, drops... goodby game, it was only the clients that could tolerate transparent disconnections, insertions, or CPU replacement.

Now it seems that Brawl dynamically hosts this game... meaning that there is no dedicated "host" and that's pretty cool.

That along with the lottery should also allow for rapid matchmaking, but Gamespy (Nintendo's partner in that relm) will likely still foobar that.

I'm sure there will be a way to vote for "no items" and if the other 3 people don't agree, well then tough!!

Looks like you can weight your vote with coins, so one person may still be able to force his choice at a cost, but if I were Nintendo I would make it so that increasing coinage would never give you a 100% chance of getting what you want.  Otherwise I worry about hackers with unlimited coins when there is eventually a gameshark for the system.  Still I'm not too worried about that.

Man, all I can say is that update was EPIC.  Yeah, I know it is a miss use of the word Epic.  But I don't care.  It was awesome.

Nintendo is really working hard on Brawl's online experience.  I like the idea of playing the computer if players drop out.  It probably won't be as bad as 3 players all dropping out, but 2 is probable.

We also now understand why the play anyone system isn't ranking wins and loses for that mode.  You never know if you played all humans or the CPU.  I knew it would make sense later.  And the friends modes don't have the CPU jumping in, and you can save stats for wins and such with those games.

I am curious about items online.  I believe how they are getting online to work is limiting the items available for each match.  So Everyone gets to vote for like 3 items to be turned off, and perhaps only 8 are turned off?  I dunno.  I would like to know more about that.

This is a terrible idea.

Is there anyone who WON'T realize when they're suddenly playing against a CPU? I've yet to play against a CPU in a SSB game which isn't painfully obvious, and I'm sure they'll have it fixed, but the E4All CPU videos weren't exactly encouraging.

Beyond that, if your opponent drops out of fear, you should win, period. I understand they didn't want to destroy the continuity of the match, but I don't like the fact that I could be continuing the game against a CPU when I went online to fight human players. I'd rather the match end and I jump into my next match against humans faster.

To each their own, but you sound like you're covering for Sakurai.

We had this information years ago in the form of Metroid Hunters and its online mode which gave you the same choices, minus character selection. There's nothing new or worthwhile in this update, only that I can expect to start playing battles against humans but finish them against CPUs, which completely sucks ass since I can play against CPUs offline and I went online to fight human players.

I don't think it's a good idea that my scud of an opponent can drop a game and force me to defeat a bot or else I too get a disconnect by leaving the game.

I mean, if I dropped, I'd think, "Ha! That poor fool is going to keep playing a bot because he has no choice!" I couldn't think of a better revenge against a player that was better than you than forcing them to fight a CPU for the remainder of the match. It's like the game doesn't acknowledge that you intimidated your opponent but instead carries on like nothing is wrong when you clearly have a bot to mop up.

I was really looking forward to being able to jump into online play at any time and get practice against human players. This kills that for me because half the time will probably be spent against bots because of dropping assclowns. It's a neat idea in theory, but in practice, this will suck. I just hope it gives us the option to end the game when all the human players have dropped on you.

I don't think there is a ranking system ala Mario Strikers; but hell, I'm just speculating from the known information. I hope there's at least something to differentiated bad players from good players, so I don't easily win every time. (see what I did there :-P)

If I remember correctly, I think there was at least a mentioning of tournaments somewhere *goes rummaging through old forums*
