Character reveals, online play, level editor...these are the updates that matter. Everything else is just sundries.

Well we should be getting more character updates soon.  Since the starters for games like this are always shown in the advertisements, the entire starting lineup should be known by the end of December or early January, since Nintendo usually likes to start advertising their games in Japan around 3 weeks before release, unlike NOA who starts 3 days before release.

And speaking of the starters, we can now confirm that King Dedede is indeed a starting character since the first event on Event Mode contains him and Bowser.  Well unless you have to beat the first event mode to unlock him but I doubt that since you play as Mario in the first event match.  If King Dedede was unlockable it would have been in an event as Kirby in a Kirby stage, just like how you unlocked Ganondorf in Melee from playing in an event as Link in a Zelda stage.  Because other then Ganondorf, all other unlockable characters in Melee didn't appear in any event matches until after you unlocked them.

Yes.  Every character we've seen is a starter.  We won't see the unlockables until the game comes out.  We won't.  Plain and simple.

Sakurai did say at one point that due to their "special guest" status third party characters would be hidden when you first play the game, meaning that Snake and Sonic could indeed be hidden when you first boot up the game.

However, that was said a year ago and Sakurai could've changed his mind about it.

Can I point out the possibility that maybe you have to unlock Event Mode?  At the same time or maybe after unlocking King Dedede?

Or, here's a thought...since you're not playing AS King Dedede in that Event, who's to say that you can't still have to unlock him for play?  Just because someone's in an Event doesn't make them playable before or after (ie. Giga Bowser or Dark Link in SSB:M).

Which basically comes down to: just because King Dedede is in the first Event, doesn't mean that either are necessarily there at the start.

Well it looks like "a number" of Melee stages are going to return, which is kind of sad because I was hoping for all of them, but still this confirms that old stages will in fact be in the game.

I do wonder if the term "a number" is just being used  to say that stages from Melee like Battlefield and Final Destination would not be included because of redundancy.

Here's hoping. Otherwise it's inexcusable.

But then again, most of the levels would be very redundant with the "3 platforms and some random obstacle or maybe not" design...

Glad to see the temple and is back and the "Cave of Invincibility" along with it.

I'd rather not have three Yoshi's Story-esque levels, thanks...Two was annoying in the last game... =|

Hopefully they'll just include all the unique stages like Corneria, Big Blue, etc...

I can do without two the two similar Kirby levels as well... basically, as long as there is a stage like Corneria and Final Destination in Brawl, I will be content since we already have the Temple (although I hope the old N64 Link stage is back...).

When I first saw "Melee Stages" I was hoping that at least a few stages would be shown. But, I guess now Sakurai can use old Melee stages as filler updates. I'm glad to see the Temple is back, and I can't wait to see what else returns. Not the best update, but the best update in a while.
Also, the music = win.

I just had a thought that it would be cool if some characters "held" their taunt until they were hit or a button input was given.

For example, Link's sheaths his sword or Ike's planting it in the ground.  That would provide a little icing to some of those taunts.  I doubt that'll be the case though.

(A really neat touch would be if you have Link sheaths his sword it would stay that way until you executed a move that required him to use it....)

This update is cool, but I could see it from a mile away.

Now, if they had N64 stages.....then I would have been a great deal more excited.

I highly doubt that SSB64 levels will be excluded. Give it time, I'm sure we will get a similar update just showing off a great N64 level. I'm hoping for the Pokemon Level.

Well, I think it is a great idea to add the Melee levels, because there are some fantastic levels from the previous game.  Pokemon Stadium 1, Temple Final Destination.

I just hope they get a Bowser Castle level in Brawl.  Be it the new "retro" designed level...or a newly designed level with dastardly traps throughout.

Another observation of sorts:  What are those little dots next to the character markers at the bottom of the screen (Look at the photos in event mode)?  Stock was my first guess but then I saw the photo of Yoshi's event match (get both enemies in eggs) and only Yoshi has a marker.... hmm.  (Maybe as Yoshi you only have 1 life but the computer has unlimited?  That would actually make some sense for that event)

Also, the Dark Link event is similar to SSBM in that the dark link is pure black - not a selectable costume option.

Finally,  in the photo for the first event match, Mario seems to have damage and there is a blue platform beneath him.  At first I thought that was the starting platform when your character returns from falling off the stage... but he has damage... could it be an item?

Notice how Dark Link has the same circle thing underneath him in the last picture?  I think it may just be an after-effect of the jump animation...

Hmm... well I guess I just never noticed it before, but I guess they put a little something there to justify the midair jump.  It seems that the effect appears as far back as You must recover Section.

However the one shot I mention is much bigger and definitely BLUE.  Seems a bit more prominent than the less intrusive circles seen in the other shots.

So tomorrow is December 3rd, who else thinks the update will be something big.  Since this was the original release date I'd imagine they'd put something that's worthwhile.

Of course I wouldn't be surprised if the update is just a picture of Sakurai in his underwear playing the game with the caption underneath saying This could have been you, hahaha.
