So, will this prompt Nintendo to release Mother 3 around the world?

That was my first reaction. Let's hope it gets the Fire Emblem treatment.

So much for all that "no Japan only characters" talk that went on before hand...

Sigh..... I remember warning against putting too much stake into what developers say. Not that their liars or anything, but unless they're advised not say something, they're kind of just talking. That and the possibility of simply changing their minds.

If Nintendo was that smart we would have already played it by now....... They'll probably just repackage it as a DS game if anything and if that's the case, we better damn well get something else for the inconvenience. I'd say all is forgiven if they just packaged Mother 3 with ports of the 1st two. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones if I get some freebies.

If I remember correctly Sakurai didn't definitively say there wouldn't be any Japan-only characters, he just said that they were trying to avoid them.

HUGE!

I do think Ness is still in the game, as Sakurai doesn't outright say Ness has been replaced...

(Actually, it'd be interesting if Ness was unlockable once again...)

I don't think Ness or Marth are gone either. I don't feel like getting into it. It just makes more sense to keep them in.

EDIT: Then again, it made sense to bring Mother 3 to the US and that didn't happen.....

Wait, wasn't there some kind of Sakurai quote that said all the characters from the original game were definitely in? So why are we now worried that Ness is out?

I'd bet my house that Ness is gone. There wont be two characters from a niche franchise that isn't even out everywhere in the world, plus Lucas looks exactly the same as Ness and has the same attacks. Someone should inform Sakurai that millions of people are going to be playing this game in non-Japan countries (they exist), wondering who the hell is this stupid kid.

Ness and Lucas are the Ryu and Ken of Smash Bros.
Personally I have no problem with clones if it means a HUGE roster.
I mean would you rather have 30 entirely unique characters or 30 entirely unique characters with 20 clones thrown in to make it 50.

Well I'm hoping this is an indication of things to come. With the last Smash Bros. we hadn't seen a single FE game ever in the US, now we almost have 4. Maybe, just maybe, now that we are getting a Mother 3 character we will see the long awaited Mother 3 finally come to America.

DEFINITELY 30 UNIQUE CHARACTERS!

I'm sorry, but the clones in Melee annoyed me as many of them simply didn't make sense at all. I don't mind a couple of clone characters but having half of the selection being clones that would be pushing it.

I believe Ness is still in the game.  Just the fact that Sakurai would bring him up in that update makes me believe he is not cruel enough do that to use.  Besides his comment even sounded like a challenge of Lucas vs. Ness.

Also, I don't know why you think Lucas and Ness have to play the same in the game, since they have similar powers in the game.  I am expecting completely different attacks, and I believe one of those photos points out to that in the update.

Where do you live I'm in the home market right now with a baby on the way and all.

On the Ryu and Ken thing.  They played fairly different and the cloning thing was explained by being of the same school.  I think they did a good job of that.

So we've seen four screenshots and Lucas plays like Ness confirmed?  I mean, there are a couple of attacks that they look to share, but I'm assuming there's enough variety in the Mother universe for two characters that don't play alike.

I don't mind clones, but I'd like them to take up less than 20% of the roster.  Melee was about the limit for me.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Not to mention, that SSB gives these small franchises huge exposure. When people play with these characters they will naturally want to know where they all come from. When enough people are knowledgeable about the character origins, Nintendo can release a game like Mother 3, and actually sell through tons of copies just based on people's love for the characters they play as in SSB.

So far its looking like, any character that was unlockable in either of the first 2 games will have to be unlocked in this game. I don't think they kicked Ness out, how could they?

Yes, but Sakurai has already expressed his distaste with clones this time around.

Why do people already assume Lucas is a clone? As others have said, we have only seen one or two Lucas attacks (depending on if the one used against Metaknight is a mid-air footstool jump) and neither look to be moves that Ness used.

Ness had better be in the game. He's a character that REALLY doesn't deserve the ax. Dr. Mario and Pichu most certainly do, but definitely not Ness. But then, I'm comparing worthless clones to an original character. I wouldn't mind him as an alt; so long as, if I select him, then the game acknowledges it by saying "NESS!" and not "LUCAS!" Like, with Peach having the Daisy outfit as an alt, only different in that one way I said.

I could see Ness and Lucas working together in the Subspace Emissary, Although Mother 3 is set many many years after Earthbound, All the characters are in a floating timeline so that wouldn't restrict them.  Lucas will probably play similar to how Ness played in Melee, If Sakurai takes the time to think up original moves for Ness which I am sure he could manage.

Actually one thing everyone has to remember about Sakurai's comments reguarding characters is he said them back in June 2006.  Nintendo might have been planning an early 2007 release at that time and so in order to make such a deadline Sakurai might have been planning on removing some of the older ones in order to make room for more new ones.  Plus being released early wouldn't have allowed for too many new character either and so that's why he said not to expect any Japan only characters because the only new characters would have been well known worldwide characters.

But when the Wii became such a huge success maybe Nintendo told Sakurai he can have all the time in the world to finish the game.  Which might explain why he said to expect only 2-player Online at E3 2006 because that's all they could do before an early 2007 release but being given extra time allowed for them to get 4-player working right.

Which could be the same thing here where being given extra time has allowed Sakurai to keep nearly all of the characters from Melee as well as throw in a Japan only character like Lucas since they'll have enough new character now to allow for something like this to happen.

Now everything I said is just my theory but it is something to think about because we have no idea what Sakurai and Nintendo were planning with this game back when he made all his comments in June 2006 and so we shouldn't put too much faith in those anymore.
I’m gonna have you play every inch of this game! - Masahiro Sakurai

I don't really want to over-hype expectations, but for a game that is getting a bigger budget, a bigger team, and a longer dev time than Melee, I don't think 40 playable characters is completely out of the question...I still would rather have them all mostly unique though... =3

As much as I might bitch now about wanting all unique characters, I can't help but see myself not caring once I start playing this bad boy. Cuz really, they could of rehashed Melee and simply stuck an online mode to it, and I still would of shoved $50 down Nintendo's shirt pocket.
