Nintendo WON'T be at TGS 2007
« on: July 30, 2007, 10:57:27 PM »
http://kotaku.com/gaming/no-nintendo/tokyo-game-show-exhibitor-list-284208.php

That's just downright depressing.

Nintendo you better have a freaking Smash blow out at Leipzig (See: announce online gaming formally for the game).

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well many of you may be correct in your assumptions that Nintendo will have some presence there.

Update: Nintendo at TGS Still a Possibility

Quote

Earlier we reported that Nintendo would not be attending the Tokyo Game Show 2007 in Japan based on the fact that it was absent from the official exhibitor list.

However, a spokesman for Nintendo told Gamespot that the possibility that Nintendo could be present at the Tokyo Game Show in some form still exists: "We've not announced our plans yet for TGS 2007. Although it is worth noting that we haven't taken part in many TGS events over the last few years--so were we not to be present it would not be unusual."

That's what I thought too. Feel free to prove me wrong but I think this is a huge non-issue.

Wasn't there some talk earlier that they would be showing up at this year's TGS though?

Nintendo normal shuns a corporate presence at TGS but, they seem to allow people from the company to speak over the years.

Wasn't 2005 where Iwata revealed the Wii Remote at TGS?

Yeah.

Nintendo doesn't attend TGS as a vendor, but Iwata could still give a keynote, regardless.

I thought they had already booked floor space for this year after the realization that minE3 wasn't going to be as big as previous years.

Doesn't mean they couldn't back out.  They might have thought that E3 accomplished all the goals that they had set for the two to cover so why waste money and manpower on the second?

Yeah, hopefully they backed out to leave room for all the 3rd party unveilings that are going to be taking place.
Wouldn't want to over shadow all that positive 3rd party buzz that they have been receiving for the last 6-8 months.

Nintendo is probably better off letting third-party Wii games get the attention. The Wii is the first Nintendo console in a decade that has a shot at some SERIOUS third-party support after all.
I think we'll be pleasantly surprised too. With the Wii leading sales in every market and pretty much dominating Japan alongside the DS, a lot of Japanese third-parties that were weary at first likely have high-profile Wii games in development by now that will be ready for unveiling at the TGS.

As for Nintendo's first party offerings. I think it's likely that from here on they will release screens and vids on their own terms. More like the Smash Bros situation. But who knows they just may shock us and announce the return of Spaceworld. Anything is possible.

If Nintendo keeps garnering support and there is a hole in the year, I'm thinking during the Spring.  I can see 2009 Spaceworld may make an appearance because their will be so much released that Nintendo would need the time to get hype for the releases that aren't during the time that other conferences directly cover.  If that makes any sense.

Press releases are cheaper and easier.

The usual media outlets will get screens/media quickly over the internet anyway.  That's what online press rooms/kits are for.

Nintendo NEVER goes to TGS, and everyone ALWAYS throws a fit about it. But at the same time, they ALWAYS do a keynote. You'd think we'd learn by now.

Face it, Nintendo is notorious for being a control freak.
With E3 no longer what it once was and Spaceworld unlikely to return, I think the days of Nintendo unveiling games and making announcements at shows are coming to an end. Basically, like P666 says, it will probably be all press-releases and SSBB-style online reveals from here on. Personally I'm fine with that. Instead of waiting all year for one big show that people over-hype to oblivion and pretty much guarantee disappointments, we'll get completely unexpected reveals on random days whenever Nintendo damn well feels like it.

I'm going to say it and you guys can then lynch me.

Nintendo using just Press Releases would be like a Ford using just Demo Materials.  These shows are needed for more then just making announcements.  To run a business and to keep people loyal to you you need some face time.  The human element.  A journalist needs Networking to get the story the others don't have.  Nintendo needs the reviewer to feel a sense of loyalty.  Both need to feel that the other are of high quality.  Even with this connected digital age their are some things you just can't do in a non-personal setting.  Individual events for reviewers can get expensive.  Focus groups cost money as well.  The car industry has these types of shows and they have been around for a long time.  Ah I guess this is where Videogames living in a very fuzzy place doesn't help.

People can gauge a movie on a trailer.  Some do that with games while others must experience it like a car.  You wouldn't by a car from a video alone in most cases.  You test drive it to see if its to your liking.  I'm trying to say is that these style of events are still important.  I think they will get smaller and more specific.  To the point that Nintendo will have Spaceworld, MS will have another something of their own, and so will Sony.   We'll see less of a centralized big presence but, they'll still be big events.

I agree with you, but I don't think the events will be that big. I think it'll get decentralized in to the sort of small "Media days" like the ones lots of publishers threw in the months leading up to E3, and like the ones Nintendo themselves threw in the months leading up to E3 with a developers conference and that media day where only mags got to play Prime 3. There's no need for the glam and glitz and cost of a giant Spaceworld or X07 when you can do many cheaper, specific, small scale, focused events where the message can be better controlled and there's less stress for everyone involved.

"With E3 no longer what it once was and Spaceworld unlikely to return, I think the days of Nintendo unveiling games and making announcements at shows are coming to an end."

For Nintendo's sake alone (ignoring my own personal desire for Nintendo to keep me informed) I hope they don't ever think this is a good idea.  Out of sight = out of mind.  People forget about you when you're not in the news and new game annoucements and press conferences and stuff like that get you in the news.  And I'm talking about the mainstream media as well before someone says that none of this applies to non-gamers so it doesn't matter.  You disappear from the media and everyone assumes you're gone.  Nintendo has momemtum and they need to keep that going.  Being media-friendly is a good marketing tool.  That's why so many people were drooling over the Xbox before it was even revealed and the general public seemed almost unaware that the Gamecube was launching at the same time.  Suck up to both the mass media and the gaming media.  As long as the games remain of high quality there's no harm of losing any credibility with consumers and you get free ads out of it that most people don't even notice are ads.
