That's a higher score than I expect! But that's probably because I watched the Gametrailer review and they were sounding critical in their talking points, finally giving it something like a 7.6 or something.

The gametrailer review sucks. They don't even get most of the facts right.

Actually I don't trust reviews that give 10s.  Much less very high 9s.

Most games are not perfect, and can be improved upon.  An 8 or higher to me is worth buying, but remember to take in consideration if it is your type of game.

Matt really does care about his reviews and reputation as a reviewer more than many of the other IGN writers who I have seen give 9s out just for graphics.

I would not give any game released on the Wii yet a 10...and I dunno if I ever will, though Mario Galaxy might get up there.

As much praise and as few complaints as the actual text of the review dishes out, the score SHOULD be higher IMO.
I mean I understand that Matt is trying to be a respectable reviewer and save the REALLY AMAZING scores for games that will truly deserve them like Mario Galaxy and Brawl likely will.
But the problem is other reviewers on IGN and gaming sites all over give a higher score to games that are quite mediocre.
So when a great game like Mario Strikers gets the same review as some mediocre game in another review, it looks REALLY BAD.

I say there's no room for fair reviews in gaming. Matt should just suck it up and give the game a 9 or even 9.5. He can save the 10 for Metroid.

If Matt wants to be the rebel and take a stand against over-zealous reviewers who pan out crazy high scores to game after game,  he should just stop scoring entirely and force people to actually READ his review.

I agree that reviews would be better without concrete scores, oftentimes the score isn't entirely decided by the reviewer and is more decided by the site or magazine to fit with their scale; I've heard games being reviewed and the reviewer suggests a score but the site lowers the score, because the reviewer's score was higher than such-and-such game, and they couldn't have that. A lot of gamers will also just look at the number, or put too much meaning in the number and not pay attention to the review itself. I often read reviews where the points listed would have led me to a higher or lower score than the one given. I believe Computer Gaming World switched to this scale, but they lost me as a subscriber when they changed their name, because the Mac user in me won't let me subscribe to a magazine called Games for Windows.

A 10 (or 5 or 100 or 40 or A+ or 17 or whatever the best possible score is) doesn't mean the game is perfect; no game is perfect. High 9s aren't very common on most sites, and generally a sign of real quality. I agree nothing on the Wii has been 10-worthy yet, and I also think Galaxy is going to make a good run at it.

EDIT: Does anyone know if Strikers is playable online across continental lines? I have a friend in England who has the game already and was hoping we could exchange codes and have at it. Nintendo's promotional materials seem to suggest NA only for random matches, but I haven't seen anything specific for friend matches.

I think you can play Strikers across the world if you have friend codes, but if not there's only regional play.

And what Michael8983 said is absolutely true. The perception of game reviews has always been that a "7" is passable, and everything under is unacceptable. Matt is trying to go against the norm by actually making a "5" the benchmark of whether a game is recommended or not. I think NWR is doing the same thing.

Regardless, they're a few people doing this against the whole Internet. On IGN, the Xbox and PS editors continue to inflate their scores, and so do most other sites. Some might call it an admirable cause on Matt's part, but he's not going to change anything. It's just making Wii games look worse compared to those on other consoles.

It only takes a ripple to start a Sunami(sp?).  Anyways, Matt made it a point that this generation he would do the scoring fairer so that later on in the lifetime it wouldn't get so skewed like it did with the Cube.  I support what IGN Wii and NWR is trying to do.  It is not very uncommon that NWR will buck the trend themselves.  There have been plenty of times and they have gotten slack about it.  Each time it was the honest opinion of the reviewer, in general.  Policy here states that a game with a 5 is average its not good.  It has enough pros and cons to make it just average but if you are a fan of the series or genre you'll probably get some goodie out of it.  Though stepping back its not a game review problem alone.

Going through school people are expected to now get A's and A's only.  Anything below a 3.5 in some fields getting out of college, and some of these fields are hard, makes it seem impossible for you to get your foot in the door.  Companies won't talk to you.  Get less than a 3.0 and you might as well welcome yourself to a life of flipping burgers.  Which I think is pathetic.  It use to be a 2.5.  Which showed you weren't slacking.  As they said in the Incredibles, "if everyone is special then no one is special at all."  How does such an inflation in grades do anything but look good on paper for some politician?  Its a real travesty and let down for are youth, 0-Graduating College; it gives the smarter kids no way to really be engaged and flex there mental capacity, and it does disservice to the less capable because they have no real place to strive for.  When Exceptional, an A, is average doesn't that make it a C?  Its just frustrating.  Making the youth of the day less respectful, less capable, and less intelligent for the future.  No wonder the US is working itself to 3rd world status.  Are education system is below 3rd World.

Though this isn't really the place for this type of discussion is it?  To sum it all up Consumers want the best and only the best bang for their buck.  Which is great when you are talking TV's and Washers not when you are buying interpretted things like Movies, Music, and Games.  Which I guess would be one of my best reasons for saying games are art.  There is no true hard facts that matter about them when making a decision its all opinion in the end.

I'm going to take the high road and not make a big deal about you using Are instead of Our in a statement about education (though not quite high enough to not point it out at all ) and instead give you the award for Most Insane Exaggeration of the Month. The United States may not (read: does not) have the greatest education system in the world, but to call it worse than Third World standards is beyond ridiculous, beyond ludicrous, and to a point where the level of stupidity is so dense that light itself can not escape it. Yes, there are quite a few problems with the current system, but it's not completely horrible (at least not most of the time) and has its successes from time to time. Also, I think the mere fact that the US has a public education system puts it quite a bit ahead of the third world.

Next time you want to make a huge exaggeration like that, think about what you're saying a little before posting it.

Also: On Topic: Strikers is going to be really good. There, I think I covered the topic quite nicely.

I think the education system is varied in the U.S., some schools are better than others. The same applies college, some colleges are better than others and GPA is taken into account on a case by case basis. It would make no sense to do otherwise, that would be like saying a 3.5 in Harvard the same as a 3.5 in a community college. I know here, locally, the high schools are rated differently, at the local public school a 4.0 is seen as 3.0 at the U.W. While on the flip side the private school I graduated from was highly regarded.
