Gizmodo, part of the Gawker umbrella that owns Kotaku, is running
an article on the possibility of the PSP overtaking the DS. They attribute the recent sales in Japan as the sparking point for the article and what other reasons exist (8 to be exact) for why the PSP *could* overtake the DS.
The reasons they give are as follow:
1. 1 Million new PSPs were sold in Japan in around two monthsThis seems generally irrelevant, this happens to be a hot time to buy games and game systems, so those numbers are probably not indicative of the sales it will see come the spring time through the summer.
2. Sales figures for PSPs are going up, sales figures for DS Lites are going down (in Japan)This also means jack, because the DS's lead is so commanding, it is doubtful the PSP selling better for a couple months is going to propel it ahead of the DS. Plus Japan is a much smaller part of the world equation.
3. PSP actually has more good games to playThis just made me LOL. Hard.
4. The PSP has better PS3 integration compared with the DS and WiiThis means nothing as well because the PS3 market share is not very big (for now at least) and having integration with it is not necessarily going to pad your sales numbers too well.
5. The PSP has better media capabilitiesWell clearly, UMD was so successful media capabilities are obviously what everyone is looking for in their gaming system.
6. The PSP has better add-onsAdd-ons are pointless and nobody cares about them.
7. The PSP actually sold as well the PS2I don't see where they get those numbers but sure ...
8. Sony's planning a PSP PhoneOf course that's going to help. The N-Gage did so well, who wouldn't want to toss a phone in it?
Pretty ridiculous IMO.
