New PSP version announced
« on: July 11, 2007, 07:49:49 AM »
Sony just revealed it's new PSP which has a better battery and is lighter. Pretty much looks the same. It has the ability to output high quality video to a television set.

/thoughts?

Wow sony is really stretching with this! They have CHEWIE yes Chewbacca from Star Wars himself is on the stage showing the PSP Star Wars thing.

On a random side note the Sony presenter has stated like 10 times how nervous he is being up there presenting, yesh.

"It has the ability to output high quality video to a television set."

Cool idea but wrong system.  If I want to play PSP games on the TV I'll just get the PS2 game that the PSP game was either ported from or later ported to.

Now the DS needs something like this where you can use the Wii remote as your stylus.  I really want to be able to play DS games on a TV, particularly for titles like New Super Mario Bros that don't really use the touch screen.

The PSP's problems are price and major lack of exclusive games.  I don't think this fixes those problems.  The PSP isn't relevant.  The Gameboy was relevant.  People still play old Gameboy games but no one really plays Game Gear games.  Nintendo's portables were never just portables.  They were essential videogame systems that you had to own so you didn't miss out on some of the greatest games of all time.  Even if you didn't have any intention of using it as a portable you still bought it, just for the games it had.  That's what Sony and anyone else who tries to make a portable has to learn.  You really need to make a must-own videogame system that also happens to be portable.

Well all I can say is there is one good thing about this development, the older PSP will be dropping in price for sure. Maybe now I'll pick one so I can play the very few appealing PSP titles and mod it to play old Nintendo/Sega games on the go.

It's not like DS already has a commanding lead on PSP or anything and the DragonQuest game will make sure that over seas the DS still slaughters PSP.

Not saying this wont help PSP but it's not gonna really harm DS.

Just talking about the states here.  The DS doesn't have the super commanding lead like it does in other territories. (DS has a 3,627,000 unit lead or the PSP has sold ~68% of the units the DS has sold)

Do I think this will swing the balance of power.  No.
Do I think the output is a good idea.  Yes.
Do I think that if they would have stopped shipping PS2's when the PS3 started shipping so developers had to move their cheaper titles to the PSP that this would have made more a difference.  Yes.

If they can phase out the PS2 and position the PSP as their budget system it could easily have more life in it.  Especially since there is no real rush for a full update till either the DS2 or GBA2.   The also have the luxury of moving to solid state carts instead of the UMD vie a read only Memory Stick.  It will never overtake the DS par se but it could be a solid earner for Sony.

That $200 pricetag might still be a bit high for consumer psychology, no matter the actual value the bundle offers.

I like the new ability to play the games on a TV set.
Their are a few PSP only games that I would much rather play on a TV that on the PSP.

If they can do a firmware hack that will let me play games off a memory stick with the new PSP I MIGHT pick it up.

I recall back around last year's E3 (or perhaps some time after) Sony dismissed the Wii as being just a competitor for the PS2 instead of the PS3, but isn't this more the case with their PSP?

I see the PSP and PS2 as being in competition more than it is with the DS, but maybe that's just me... I mean, the types of games on the DS and PSP are not really the same. The DS retains the handheld/portable feel, but the PSP is just a console you can hold in your hands. I don't know if that makes sense or not...

All videogame system are competing, yes even handhelds versus home consoles, although that's less of a competition than home vs. home and portable vs. portable.

This is why, when Nintendo says its not competing with Sony and Microsoft, it really means, "We're looking for a new way to take their names and kick their asses."  For all the rhetoric about how PSP and DS aren't competing, I'll always remember last year when Sony announced it was lowering PSP shipments by 3 million, and a couple of weeks later Nintendo announced it was increasing DS shipments by 3 million.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I think "we're not competing" is the corporate equivalent of saying "their loss" after getting dumped.  If you pretend you aren't competing you don't look like such a loser when the other guy kicks your ass.

The difference, Ian, is that Nintendo is using the non-competition line in times of great success. By now, there is no way that the Wii will be considered a failure in the same sense that the GameCube was, so I don't think they are trying to cover their tail there.

Competition does exist between the big three, but Nintendo's form of competition is about reaching out to new demographics, not capturing more of the same group. When Sony or Microsoft brag, they brag about selling x million units. When Nintendo brags, they brag about winning over soccer moms and old people. In the end, all three are competing for sales, but Nintendo's competition is fought differently. It's not a cover-up, it's just a fact.
Thanks for listening.

I will have to agree with MarioAllStar on this one.

The last thing I could remember being a "cover up" for this gen from Nintendo was the release of the DS. When they said the whole "this will be a third tier product" trying to say how the Gameboy brand wouldn't be going anywhere and yada yada.

That was them covering themselves incase in bombed. The Wii I think they knew what they were doing since DS was a big testing ground in the non-gamer market.

I was hoping for more out of the new PSP....

Well, no, actually I wasn't. I'm glad Sony didn't do very much to improve it because I like gloating over Sony fans for the way they bashed Nintendo in the past.

Gizmodo, part of the Gawker umbrella that owns Kotaku, is running an article on the possibility of the PSP overtaking the DS. They attribute the recent sales in Japan as the sparking point for the article and what other reasons exist (8 to be exact) for why the PSP *could* overtake the DS.

The reasons they give are as follow:

1. 1 Million new PSPs were sold in Japan in around two months

This seems generally irrelevant, this happens to be a hot time to buy games and game systems, so those numbers are probably not indicative of the sales it will see come the spring time through the summer.

2. Sales figures for PSPs are going up, sales figures for DS Lites are going down (in Japan)

This also means jack, because the DS's lead is so commanding, it is doubtful the PSP selling better for a couple months is going to propel it ahead of the DS. Plus Japan is a much smaller part of the world equation.

3. PSP actually has more good games to play

This just made me LOL. Hard.

4. The PSP has better PS3 integration compared with the DS and Wii

This means nothing as well because the PS3 market share is not very big (for now at least) and having integration with it is not necessarily going to pad your sales numbers too well.

5. The PSP has better media capabilities

Well clearly, UMD was so successful media capabilities are obviously what everyone is looking for in their gaming system.

6. The PSP has better add-ons

Add-ons are pointless and nobody cares about them.

7. The PSP actually sold as well the PS2

I don't see where they get those numbers but sure ...

8. Sony's planning a PSP Phone

Of course that's going to help. The N-Gage did so well, who wouldn't want to toss a phone in it?

Pretty ridiculous IMO.

What bothers me is that this looks at recent sales only.  I believe the DS has doubled what the PSP has sold so far, right?  So now, with the Slim PSP's release, the PSP almost sells as well as the DS does, but not quite as well, and they believe there's going to be a big turnover.  Gawker sites don't like Nintendo, and they try to hide it, but it's pretty clear most of the time.  I say we take 'em out.

This reminds me of that one month back in 2003, or thereabouts, when XBox outsold Gamecube in Japan.  I remember the top story on G4's news show (whatever it was called then.  Filter, maybe?) was "XBox is outselling Gamecube in Japan!!!"  And then once they got like a minute into the story, they finally added the caveat "this month," completely neglecting the fact that GC was outselling XBox every other month prior to then.

It's just really odd how people have irrational hatred toward Nintendo.  I don't understand it all.
