Take Two (2K/Rockstar) to "focus" on DS and Wii
« on: June 19, 2007, 11:30:06 AM »
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but:

Quote

To be perfectly frank, I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to realize what’s going on with Wii and DS. I will tell you that very quickly we turned to both 2K and to Rockstar and said guys, we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy and we are working on it. As we get into the next quarter and into budget season for 2008, everybody in this company is completely focused on it.

- Strauss Zelnick, Chariman of the Board (Take Two)

Always good to hear; however, he does go on to say:

Having said that, development cycles are long.

So it's clear the support is a ways off, although it's great to hear that level of positive remarks from a company which has traditionally stayed away from Nintendo's offerings.

I wonder if an AO game on an underpowered platform with comparatively cheap dev costs will bring in more profit than an M game on HD consoles with astronomical dev costs.

Although with third parties I've learned that nothing means squat until it's in stores, it is nice to see a suggestion of meaningful support.  Hearing Sega predict the PS3 as the winner or other third parties talk about children's games designed specifically for the "Wii audience" gets pretty tiresome particularly when the Wii's sales are such that it should be attracting the main support from pretty much everyone.

I heard that almost 60% of the Wii audience is over the age of 18. The percentage that is actually children (below 13) is going to be even lower than that. Maybe only 25% are children? It would make absolutely no sense to ignore 2/3rds to 3/4ths of a market because of some retarded stereotype that has no basis in reality.

If third parties are going to only make children's games on the most popular console on the market where the vast majority of it isn't even owned by children then they are absolute morons. So what if Nintendo isn't making M rated games? There is no reason third parties can't. When I look at most third parties I think of those newly hatched geese that follow the first moving thing they see and are unable to go their own direction. *shakes head*

Do you think we'll get ports of "The Warriors," "Canis Lupis: Bullsworth Academy," and the GTA Stpries line of games?

... I'd be pretty happy with that, as long as they did one or two new titles as well.

Would anyone else love to see Max Payne made for the Wii?

I think a third person shooter would work better than a first person shooter, and I base that on nothing. Still, a slow-mo mechanic has been done alot, but it's still badass!

I still can't get over that they were surprised Nintendo was fine with mature content.  I thought people knew that by a few years ago.

I'd love a damn original game, I can't be the only one, right? because it sure feels like it.

Nintendo and Rockstar should collaborate on a game where Mario works as a hitman in the Mushroom kingdom.

Of course we want an original game, it's just that Rockstar has never supported a Nintendo console and so their games have been missed by many. Not to mention the fact that they could pull more PS2/Xbox fans over to the Wii side with new-last generation favorites. And also to allow people who have never owned a console before the Wii to play some of their top franchises.

But your right......A new game would be wonderful.

The true innovation of the Wii appears to be an innovative way to recycle old content.  Yes I'd like original games too as well as exclusives that are either brand new or part of the main line of a series and not some spinoff.

We ALL want original games, which is why we're all gonna buy No More Heroes, Dewy's Adventure, Soul Caliber Legends, and ManHunt 2, right?

But the fact is that you gotta learn to crawl before you can walk. And right now, third parties are learning that crawling works on the Wii. The more encouragement we give 'em in the process (while expanding our gaming horizons with some decent games we may have not played before), the more eager they'll be to move onto the next level and stand up on their own.
