I saw it and loved it. Definetly an grade-A film.

Worst Bond ever? You must have missed the one starring Richard Lazenby.

George, not Richard.  And in all honesty, On Her Majesty's Secret Service wasn't that bad.  And the parts that were bad had more to do with the script than the actor.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa WHOA - are we actually saying that there's a Bond film out there that is actually good? Or are we allowing for the possibility that an actor may be good at playing Bond even though the movie he is in is definitely among the worst ever made?

To reiterate, there's no such thing as a good Bond film.

Herein lies the ultimate irony--Evan loves movies even though he has horrible taste in them.  He writes long-winded--sometimes insightful--blog posts on the subject, and can discuss them endlessly on forums and in podcasts.  He pays attention to cinematography, camera usage and editing more than most people.  Yet his taste in movies baffles the minds of his peers.

How can he claim that the Bourne series contains some of the best movies of the past five years (itself a highly questionable statement) yet, at the same time, make the statement that there's no such thing as a good Bond film when it's obvious that the Bourne series draws a lot of its inspiration from the movies based on the writings of Ian Flemming?

It's not the Bourne series (yet) - just Bourne Supremacy. Bourne Identity was a joke of a bad film. The series can draw whatever it wants from Ian Fleming, they've still not made a good movie about his characters.

I agree with Evan 100%. About Bond movies, I mean. Bond movies are like episodes of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno - sure, they feature good (and/or good looking) actors, and good moments on occasion, but, mainly, they're tedious wastes of time.

You realize I'm completely ignoring the Brosnan movies, right?

Funny, the Brosnan movies are the only ones I like.

That statement is not true.

I haven't seen most of the others, but the one I did, I was like, falling asleep halfway through.

So what I'm saying is, I want to see Hot Fuzz.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I never felt that Dalton made a good Bond, but after watching some of his Bond movies a while back I found that I actually like them.  The only Brosnan ones I liked were the first two.  Moore's movies were more bubblegum movies, whereas Connery's are the ones I felt are the best.  I haven't seen Casino Royale yet, but have it on DVD.

So Evan, what is it exactly that you dislike about Bond films? There has been over twenty of them. Surely one must meet exacting cinema standards.

Evan doesn't know what he's talking about.  Casino Royale was one of the better action movies of the past several years.  Daniel Craig makes an excellent bond.

No depth, no character, no life, no humor save for stupid one liners. Stupid action scenes, stupid plot devices, stupid dialogue, no redeeming value save for their ability to fulfill the "Bond" formula. Goldeneye had a bit more heart than most of them, and Casino Royale had some great action scenes. Neither is what I'd dare to call a good film.

Of course (I'm going to piss everyone off by saying this) I watch the Bond movies all the time, because they're quintessential male cinema, just terribly horrendously stupendously bad. Bond exists to be made fun of. Later entries tried too hard to be taken seriously, early entries dated themselves too quickly. All are fun to watch because you don't have to pay attention - social cinema, if nothing else.

I have all of the Ian Flemming James Bond books, but so far the only one I've read is Casino Royale.

Nitsu, my favorite of the novels is "The Spy Who Loved Me"  it builds tension by the fact that Bond is missing from most of the story.
