Turnabout Nintendo-ism
« on: April 21, 2007, 05:58:37 PM »
Ever since we started to discuss the validity of Go Nintendo over at the Wii forums I felt as if I was playing a real life game of Phoenix Wright here.

Both parties have sincere sounded testimonies, but only one is relevant towards solving the case.

COURT IS IN SESSION!

Judge Pap here! Let's present the parties!

The NWR users will be the jury.

The thread where the debacle started.

Party 1
Name: Deguello and NWR community
Occupation: NWR member, reviewer
Story: Claims that he was treated unjustly after he went to the chat room to complain about the site posting his reviews without notifying him.
Witness: Pro 666
Claims that the website gets easy perks despite it being a blog that chronicles other websites. A Oprah like site in other words.

Party 2
Name: The Go Nintendo staff
Occupation: Nintendo blog
Story: RMC claims that he never knew of the story because Deguello never contacted him about it. Says that he feels bad about it. The site is also accused of getting easy press perks, no original content, RMC insulting its readers and never shaving or bathing.
Witness: The Go Nintendo staff
*They couldn't be contacted

So, who is the guilty party here? Is Deguello playing the victim card, or is Go Nintendo neglecting basic courtesy laws?

DISCUSS!

NOTE: Deguello and the NWR staff, if you feel that the issue is too serious to be made fun of feel free to discuss.

But considering the NWR users have run away with more serious stuff in the past this shouldn't be a problem.

The thread where the debacle started.

Note that the thread was about the constant negative editorials about the Wii, but in typical NWR fashion it was derailed into what you see here today.

Wtf is wrong with you guys, NWR is a news site so supposedly we have amateur "journalists" and they have to go by with strict rules, GoNintendo is a blog and so therefore they can do whatever the hell they want.

Maybe NWR just doesn't want free publicity, clicks on their ads, or money.
Yes, NWR is doomed, only the forums will survive.

The issue lies with how Deguello was treated. His story is strong enough that its convincing and merits the investigation.

The issues also lie in how GoNintendo posts the full article on their site so NWR never sees the hits.

If they just posted a snippet and forced people to click the link to see it on NWR, it would be fine.

Actually, they only post a snippet and include a link.

At least I've never seen them post the whole article.

However, they do post the final paragraph of the review, meaning that people get the gist of it without reading the whole thing.

That was Deg's primary complaint so I'd assume it's a valid one.

"Story: Claims that he was treated unjustly after he went to the chat room to complain about the site posting his reviews without notifying him."

So they put up the whole review? Or was it an article? There were no Links? What was it? Please be more specific.

Edit: From reading previous post I can now understand the situation.

His complain is that he wasn't notified. Posting reviews is supposedly normal, but the common courtesy is that the author is notified that his or her review is being used.

And Caliban you have to ask Deguello that. I don't know the details of it, just that he went to complain and was treated like crap.

Posting entire reviews from another site is not normal. If you take the word for word review and post is as a blog on your site, then you've not only stolen someone else's work but you've ensured that none of your readers will visit the other person's site.

It's basically using someone else's work to earn attention for your site and giving their site the shaft. NWR is an actual site trying to get by while GoNintendo is just a goddamn blog. NWR needs those clicks for ad traffic far more than GN does.

It's not being treated like crap that Deg didn't care for (though I'm sure it didn't help). It's having his work used to generate traffic for a site OTHER than NWR.

This isn't a case. This is clearly GN being in the wrong for what they're doing. If they're going to mention NWR's reviews, then they need to post the first paragraph and then have the link to the review on NWR's site.

Though, I just checked their front page and did a search for reviews and it DOES have just a paragraph and then the link to the site right after that. Maybe they only recently started doing this?

If anyone wants to see how they do it, here ya go:

http://gonintendo.com/?p=12833

They don't post the whole review, not even close. They just post a small snipit, without even citing the score, and then give a link so that people can read the whole thing. I see nothing wrong with their method in the least, except for the fact that they only credit the site and not the author of the piece.

No, they have not. I'm not a huge fan of Gonintendo or anything, but I'm pretty saddned to see the amount of bandwagoning going on here when people aren't even familiar with the other site... People were complaining about the GoNintendo users, but I mean look what is happening here.

Personally, I don't think GoNintendo needs to contact a site everytime they post a small snipit and a link to the source. That's fine, it's fair use. I think the only case that can be made here, as I stated, is that they should cite the author of the piece instead of just the website that it came from.

I was about to suggest that since I've never seen them post entire articles or reviews. They just post either the opening or ending paragraph and post the link.

Like I said, Deguello and maybe the GN staff know the full story.

And I have to agree with Arbok. While I do believe Deguello's story it just seem that the hate some of the NWR users have towards GN is because of HIS issues with the site and decide to blindly hate without even  doing some research.

I at least checked the site to how they handled reviews and asked the webmaster and editor directly how and why they do the things they do and get HIS side of the story.

Frankly, I think we just started a Nintendo version of "West Side Story". All we need is one NWR user to fall in love with a GN user and the whole play is set.

EDIT: One other thing, here we are discussion the relations of GN and NWR, and yet none of the NWR mods or staff have come in to put their two cents on the issue. For all we know, they don't give a rat's ass while we are tearing each other's heads off over it.

I think Deg should just email the webmaster via YOU, Pap, since he seems to respond to your emails.

Maybe just politely ask that he post the name of the reviewer who wrote the review as well as emailing the site to notify them that he has posted it.

That would probably put this whole thing to bed in one fell swoop.
