I am curious how everyone gets to play their games. Like, do you rent or buy more? What store is your favorite? Do you have a membership?

Just that kind of stuff. Oh, and do you buy/sell used games? Thanks, I think this should be interesting.

Where I moved I had no real game store. I knew I was going to be moving their so about 8 months ago I took the plunge and subscribed to Gamefly.

I found out that its cheaper for me because I don't really revisit games and when a game does take longer for me to finish or I want it in my collection I just keep it and I know it works, the case and books are pretty much mint, and it normally costs less than other used sites. Its all really easy. It also gives me an incentive to beat games.

I also tend to get about $20 worth of Wiipoints every 2 or so months.

Huh, I've wondered about Gamefly. My family already has a Netflix subscription, so they won't get Gamefly. I don't think I would really use it though. But, it sounds like Ceric found it helpful when he originally considered it a "plunge."

I only buy used games and I ensure that they're in working order by sacrificing a goat without defect on an altar made of Dreamcasts.

Any game that I feel I must have day one I buy brand new. Usually these are VERY, VERY SELECT games.

Franchises I know I love. Or games I have read the reviews on and I already feel drawn to. Usually these end up being Nintendo published games only.

All other games I try to rent first and see if I enjoy them or not.

I personally have to be very selective of the games I buy because I have a limited budget. I usually only get one new a every other month. So as you can see I am very careful.

With portable games, I buy almost everything used. It helps save money, and allows me more liberty to buy more...though recently that hasn't been the case.

Virtual Console games I can buy at a whim though. However, I have slowed up on those purchases because I have too many I haven't beaten. But my heart is still set on Star Fox 64.

I just use a quantum mirror to find a universe in which I already own the game. Unfortunately, it looks like this time I accidentally wound up in a universe where polls aren't immediately locked, Bloodworth has left NWR, and Khushrenada is a smart aleck. I hope I can fix all this when I go looking for Super Paper Mario this weekend.

But since you are interested, I rented most of my N64 games, the GC was such a failure around here that video stores didn't even rented the games, so I end up playing much fewer GC games. Hopefully the new console will be a success and rent stores will get back Nintendo games. I buy Zelda, Metroid and Mario (not spinoffs) without thinking, the rest I see some footage and forumer's impressions (not just here) before making my decision, reviews are usually useless in that regard, very few tell me if I should get or not the game.

I don't rent games anymore because the only store near me (Blockbuster) has the tiniest Nintendo section, and it's just not worth it to drive there for a game they won't even have.

So I buy games new based on several factors. Previews, impressions, reviews, etc. Most of the time it works out and I'm not disappointed with a game. Then there are times where I love the premise for a game, the reviews sound promising, but it turns out to suck (Elebits). But that's the only time it hasn't worked out for me in a while.

For older games, I go with eBay to buy, or Zunafish to trade. I was using Zunafish a lot last year, but now I have so many GC and PS2 games to beat that I've stopped with that.

A buddy has a Blockbuster online account, and he gets a coupon for a free rental every month. We get a Wii game and check it out. Other than that, I buy games wherever I can find them.

I don't rent. *shrug* I don't want to worry about returning it or being forced to play it. If I want to play a game, and I think I'll have fun with it, or get a kick out of it, or learn something from it, I'll take the plunge and buy it. I like owning games, and I like having an eccentric collection with everything from Killer 7 to Hamsterz Life... I guess that's just me.

Yeah... sometimes I buy games not just because I think they'll be good, but because I want to buy them: case in point, Izuna. I knew it was waaay too hardcore. But the art is neat, and so is Atlus' localization. I've lended it to a friend who was really curious about it, so I was able to sate his curiousity. In return, he gave me an old collectible Target light up giftcard... Score! I don't regret the purchase at all.

I buy nearly every game I play. I never rent games. I've borrowed a few (Super Mario Sunshine, Trace Memory, Mario vs DK). Mostly, though, I buy whatever games I'm interested in. Because I'm very certain whether or not I want to own a game, I have nearly flawless intuition (and I do my fair share of research to verify my intuition). I also want the option of playing that game anytime I want to, or lending it to other people, and I only consider a game worth my time if it's worth buying and playing often.
Otherwise, I just play games that other people own, when we get together.

I don't rent or buy used games often. Perhaps I should. I get most of my games from Amazon and big-box stores. I try to avoid EB/Gamestop, because I hate them with a passion.

As for specific store preferences...

I only buy stuff from GS or EB when it strikes my fancy, or if it's a real niche title that I want to pre-order and encourage (i.e. Phoenix Wright, Lost in Blue 2, etc.).

Other than that, I do most of my game purchasing online through amazon.com... and I do this through the affiliate program that Amazon.com runs with smaller sites. For example, anyone remember segagamer12? His site, ratscollectibles.com has amazon banner ads. I simply click there so that Amazon knows I came from his site, do some purchasing, and if everything works correctly he gets a tiny tiny tiny infinitesimal kickback. I also order amazon through codenamerevolution.com's affiliate program with banner and stuff.

*shrug* Sure, he probably gets quarters on the $50 dollar game, but it's better than nothing right? There's really no downside to this: I avoid GS/EB, I don't need to drive out to a store, I can have it mailed right to me, I have a HUGE selection, I can buy cds and movies as well, AND I'm doing a little to help small sites without paying any more than I'd normally pay.

I try to only buy online or from Gameware. Occasionally I'll have to stop by some other place to get a game, but not often.
