GameCube problem
« on: April 08, 2007, 11:15:48 AM »
Hi, new person here. I really hope you guys can help me solve this problem as I've haven't gotten much help from the internet. My problem is this : Sometime ago I bought FIFA 05 (used). The game played fine but then gave me DRE (Disc Read Error). I thought the lens was dirty so I cleaned it and kept playing. But the same thing happened. It kept happening repeatedly. Sometimes right after I started playing, sometimes after a few hours. I thought well, ok, it must be the game since it's used. But last week I bought FIFA 07 brand new and it gave me the same problem. Also, something I've noticed with both games is that my GC seems to make more noise when it's reading them. You know, the loud clicking noises. I've gotten the DRE screen in the past but in those cases a simple cleaning of the disc/lens pretty much did the trick and then I had no issue whatsoever. But these games no matter what, give me errors. I just want to know if I need to change the laser, or what? And please don't tell me to give up and buy a Wii, I think it's a great console but I don't want one at the moment. Guess I can't complain much though, all my other games seem to run ok and I've had my GC for close to 5 years now. Thanks in advance.

One of my friends experienced a similar problem, but with Eternal Darkness. Eventually everytime he booted up the system, no matter what game it was, he got the Disc Read Error. He wound up just buying a new Cube, which might be a wise decision in your case as well. They are only like 60 bucks, and if you buy one on eBay you can probably make out with a few games and controllers extra with it. If that doesn't sound like a plan, I'd say you should probably buy a Wii.

It took a while but finally someone answered!

So far the situation hasn't gotten to that point. In fact I think yesterday or the day before that I played it for about 2 hours and experienced no problems at all. I've thought about getting it checked though. Maybe it just needs cleaning on the inside or something else as it only happens with FIFA and not all the time but anyways thanks for replying.

You just need to adjust the laser. Open it up, take out the main disk drive, and under it there's a small black square with a screw on it. Turn the screw counterclockwise ever so slightly and then try it again, if it doesn't work, try turning it a bit more.
