No Nintendo News at GDC
« on: March 02, 2007, 10:32:07 AM »
A pending stock trade means that Nintendo cannot legally announce any new information at GDC 2007.

Although Nintendo is set to have a big presence at the 2007 Game Developers Conference next week, Chris Kohler of Wired.com's Game|Life blog has learned that the company will be restricted to talking about the past.  Nintendo is set for a major stock trading event in early March, and Japan's business laws say that Nintendo can't talk about its upcoming games or other plans until that deal is complete.

Whether this policy applies only to interviews and conference sessions or will also include Shigeru Miyamoto's keynote speech is currently unknown.  NWR is following this story and will bring updates as they become available.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I am curious as to why they won't give the NYSE or Nasdaq a try.  I'd love to be able to buy their stock w/o an exchange fee.

Well, even on Nasdaq they wouldn't be allowed to say anything.

So how long will Nintendo have to stay silent? I guess they will have to do their own event afterwards. Of course 3rd parties can still make announcements, which can affect Nintendo's stock. Loopholes FTW.

Bah, and I've been looking forward to GDC for a while now...I guess it's still possible that the trade deal could be done and over with before GDC is over, but that's a pretty slim hope there...

No it doesn't. Nintendo just can not talk because the stock sale may change who has a majority of the stocks outside of Nintendo. (This is unlikely but it is a precaution made just in case and is applied to all companies that have a mass sale because a change in the majority ownership can change the direction the company goes but Nintenod owns a good percentage of their stock so...) And this is only through the end of the sale. (So sometime mid-March they will be able to talk again.)
Stupidity is lost on my. Then again I'm almost always lost.

I dunno, usually when events like this get hyped for megatons, it leads to disappointment. No chance of that happening now, and if they give us ANYTHING, it'll be a pleasant surprised.

Nintendo probably has something up their sleeves, I doubt they would throw Miyamoto out there without mentioning something exciting, even if it is for an already announced game. Not only that but I do expect some large 3rd party announcements.

I'd love to make a rant, but I read the link, and still can't understand it.  BlkPaladin made an explanation, but even that is beyond my tiny human brain...

Can anyone translate that business speak in plain English? We know the result, but what exactly is the reason?

If they make promises now and get bought out the buyer would be left with consumers expecting things he wasn't planning. Also they could change change their stock value by making promises and run a pump and dump, i.e. make a huge claim that would make everyone think you're going to make big profits, see your share price go up, sell all your shares and let the company crash.

Since Super Smash Brothers Brawl has already been announced, would it still be possible for a new video to come out during this time? I heard there was supposed to be multiple videos of different characters that will be in the game by the time it comes out, and so far we have only seen two. I was at least hoping for a new video or shots for this upcoming. Figured they are working hard on it and only want to give out new information/videos during events like this. Also hoping for new info/videos on Super Paper Mario, but I try not to expect anything at these event.

the reason why a massive amount of stocks are being sold is because the Japanese government invested in Nintendo, they made loads of money off of it and are dis investing simply because they made a certain percentage of profit.

Did i read that wrong or does that mean the goverment by selling its stocks hurt nintendo after it profited from them?  My guess is they realized how much better Sony must have been doing and dropped all their stocks in Nintendo in favor of Sony

I sorta got the impression that the Japanese government was selling the stocks because they changed thier policy on some economic something or rather... I don't know...

no its more like this, they didn't want Japanese companies at their time of weakness getting bought by western adversaries so they bought a large portion of their shares, now that Nintendo's stock is booming they can cash in and make heaps. Not anything against Nintendo, its just that they have profited significantly enough to where its a perfect time to divest

Well, Laws aren't circumstantial. The law was probably implemented so that companies couldn't intentionally lower their stock shortly before buying it back.
